Flu Shot

Did you get it yet? Did you do it in the first or second trimester? Seems like there are all sorts of opinions out there on this but the CDC says do it any time. Thoughts?

I got it, there were some mild side effects but nothing too bad.  Better be safe - I travel in public transport in a busy city, and get out a lot.  Don't want to catch it and harm my baby.  If I lived i the countryside or worked from home I probably wouldn't have...

@linny40 I was told you should get it post the first trimester, only because it can come with mild side effects and it's better for you in 2nd when you feel better, but that you CAN have it in any trimester you want.  I got some mild temperature and nausea but it went by the day after.

My DH:  French guy, car fanatic, best husband ever.
Our baby boy:  Due on 17 April, currently 37 weeks.  I can't believe it - I made it to full term!!!!
Last measurement:  3150 gs at 37+1!  This is going to be a big baby :)
  • I agree with @smallanimal, the flu shot is safe during pregnancy with minor side effects. Flu is much more dangerous to elderly, children and pregnant women due to suppression of the immune system. For me, the risk of potentially getting the flu while pregnant and the potential complications is too high for me to not get it. You can get the shot anytime. I will be getting mine this week.

  • I got it around 8 weeks when a clinic came to my work. The nurse gave me a version with less preservatives because I was pregnant

  • My OB told me to get it at any time during pregnancy. I am getting mine this week (17 weeks)), but with DS I got it around 8-9 weeks. I did not have any side effects from it other than a little soreness at the injection site.

My mom works for a pulmonologist and they suggested waiting until the end of October to get it because it loses its effectiveness when you get it to early in the season, so that's the only reason that I didn't get it during 1st tri this time. I usually go the first week of November and get my flu shot every year. :)

  • I got mine at 16 weeks.  I wanted to wait until late October and that's when my doctor offered it anyway.

  • I got mine during first tri. No side effects for me.
  • I got mine at my 12 week appointment - no side effects other than a little arm soreness. (Literally two days later I read the article about waiting until October so it doesn't lose its effectiveness... oh well!)  I get one every year though so this year was no different.

  • I got mine 3 weeks ago at my last dr appt. No side affects, just a sore arm bc the nurse was a little new. My dr. said it's safe any time but they recommend getting it right before flu season starts so it doesn't wear off too quickly. I didn't get it last time with DS because he was born 11/2 so I got it in the hospital after delivery.

  • I got it in August when the OB first got them into their office. I NEVER got a flu shot but wanted to be extra safe with the baby. I had no side effects.

  • I got mine about a week ago when they had the hospital come to our work to offer flu shots to all employees. I had no side effects, other than a small bruise on my arm for about a week. I have actually gotten the flu shot every year since about 2009.

  • I got my flu shot during the first trimester of my first pregnancy, and got it in the second this pregnancy. My office brings in a nurse to give us shots if we choose, so it was just a matter of my pregnancies being in different places when the nurse came out.

I had zero side effects, and personally feel that the risk of catching the flu while pregnant (and having to care for a 2.5 yr old) out weighs any potential risk from the shot. DH didn't get the shot last year, and guess who got one of the strands of flu that was actually covered by the shot...yep, DH. Thankfully DS and I managed to avoid catching it.

  • I got mine at 15 weeks (so, not quite 3 weeks ago). My upper arm was sore/tingly for a couple days. Standard.

  • Although I was told I could get the flu shot in any trimester, I waited until the second and got mine at the beginning of October. I didn't feel strongly about waiting because of the pregnancy,  but thought it might also be beneficial to wait to assure I was covered throughout flu season.
  • I have only had one flu shot in my life and that was when I had DS cause they made me. DS has had his, but I don't plan on getting one.

  • I'm scheduled to get mine on the 14th. I asked about the version without preservatives and that's what they'll give me. I really need it. Being immunocompromised in winter in a windowless office in cubicles with coworkers who still come in when sick....not looking forward to it!
  • I refuse to get a flu shot at any point during my pregnancy.
Same.  I've never had a flu shot and don't plan on getting one.
  • I got mine around 12 weeks I think. My ob gave it to me. No side effects.

  • Me, DH and DS (14 months) all got our shots last week (around 15 weeks). They don't even start offering them here until the end of October. DH and DS had no side effects. I had a bit of a headache and and general crappy feeling for a day, but a Tylenol and a good sleep did wonders and I was fine the next day.
  • I typically never get the flu shot. Everytime I get it, I get sick. But my OB practically forced it on me at about 11 weeks (can't remember exactly). I did get sick, but not horribly.

Just a general FYI that unless you get the live mist (which, to my knowledge is not recommended during pregnancy), you CAN NOT get sick from the flu shot. It's inactive viruses that can't cause an infection. So, if you got sick after you got your flu shot, you were going to get sick anyway. It wasn't as a result of the shot.

It also takes two weeks for the flu shot to become effective, so if you get sick in those first two weeks its because you weren't protected yet.
Yes, thank you! I meant to include that, but darn pregnancy brain strikes again.

  • I don't normally get a flu shot, but I do when I am pregnant.  I am a teacher, so I figure that I come into contact with a lot more than some people might.  I got it at about 12 weeks this time around, but my Doctor said that any time during pregnancy is fine.
  • I got mine at my 11 week appointment, no side effects other than my arm hurting a little later that day. While I've never gotten the flu, now is definitely not a time I'd like to test my luck!
  • Got mine a few weeks ago. Only side effect was that my arm felt sore.

Just a PSA, please get your flu shot.  Whether you've ever had influenza or not in your life, please protect those you may come into contact with who may not be able to get the flu vaccine due to medical reasons.

Also, saying you've never gotten the flu shot because you've never had the flu is the equivalent to saying you don't wear your seatbelt because you've never been in a car accident before.
    yeaaaaa, no.
  • I got mine at 13 weeks, get one every year and never have any problems.
  • All I know is, the last time I had the flu I was so weak I couldn't even get up to pee. It lasted ten days, pneumonia settled in after, and I lost ten pounds. If I can avoid that while pregnant I sure as heck am gonna try.
  • I haven't gotten the flu shot yet, but I will. My midwife wanted me to wait to get it when their clinic had the most recent one available without preservatives. Considering the population I work with, I kind of have to.

I didnt get the shot until I actually got the flu. I had to go to urgent care and get hooked up to an IV and everything. It was awful. It want even during flu season which made it even worse and every nurse/Doctor I came into contact with kept on asking me if I've travelled outside the country.
