Re: GD Club Check-In 10.25.16

  • How are your numbers this week? They weren't great and are slowly creeping up. My OB says until they reach the 50% rule no meds- so far I'm under the 50% mark!  But this week I get a reprieve from testing since I just got a steroid shot to strengthen baby's lungs for Pre-E and Gestational Hypertension in previous pregnancies and she said that it would cause my numbers to spike and because I'm a Type A worry-wart she said I'm not allowed to test! :)  S

How many week along are you? 32+4

Any rants, raves or questions? My only rant is that my numbers are creeping up and because I can't test right now I'm afraid they are out of control.  So I'm a bit nervous about what I'm going to find out next week when I go back and have to start testing again.

GTKY Question: What is the one thing you will eat or drink after having baby? If the diabetes goes away, I think I want to give myself 1 week to induldge in all things that I've deprived myself of so I could stick to this diet which includes but isn't limited to: doughnuts, brownies, cake, cookies, chocolate, any and all fruit at any time of the day :) and anything else that's sweet.  Things I will avoid like the plague: eggs (so sick of them), peanut butter- I eat it every day.

Team Blue? Team Pink or Team Green? Have you decided on LO's name? We are Team Green and this kid still has no name.  We better get on it though since last night I was awake from 1-4 with what I'll call "consistent rhythmic annoyances." They stopped so I'm assuming it was Braxton Hicks. I didn't have it with my other two so I was unprepared for them!

  • How are your numbers this week?

Good. So good that my doctor is seriously questioning my GD diagnosis.

How many week along are you?

    34+1

    Any rants, raves or questions?

I slept really well last night.  I think I only got up once. Because I slept so well my lats and traps are so sore.. I think I must have slept with my arms above my head..

GTKY Question: What is the one thing you will eat or drink after having baby?

Shrimp fried rice with crab rangoon and a coke

Team Blue? Team Pink or Team Green? Have you decided on LO's name?

Pink! Anastasia Elena.. My mom wanted to name me Samantha Anastasia but my dad wasn't about that life. My best friend is named Elena.

  • @cayaylonglegs that is awesome about your numbers! I wish mine were in check like yours. I swear everytime I turn around my numbers start to creep up. I think I'm becoming insulin resistant and I hate that. But my OB prescribes oral meds.

LOVE her name! I think it's super sweet!!!

  • How are your numbers this week? No spikes at all, even after my baby shower! After meeting with the diabetes center yesterday, I no longer have to log what I eat but still have to check my sugars four times a day.

How many week along are you? 33 + 1

Any rants, raves or questions? I was told I wasn't eating enough carbs (less than 175 grams/day min) so I started eating more, and I've been gaining weight faster than before. But I don't know if that's just because I'm in my last two months or if a lot of it is the extra carbs!

GTKY Question: What is the one thing you will eat or drink after having baby? I don't know if it will still be available, but I am dying for some pumpkin cheesecake. But I'll take any kind of super indulgent cake!

Team Blue? Team Pink or Team Green? Have you decided on LO's name? Team Blue! Haven't settled on a name yet, DH and I really need to work on that...

  • Hey hey ladies, ready to be tortured on Halloween?

How are your numbers this week? Sigh. Fasting and most of the time post breakfast is still bad. Actually worse since they put me on the bedtime med. Awful. Yet I had two cupcakes at my baby shower and was fine afterwards.

How many week along are you? 32w5d

Any rants, raves or questions? Baby is super blessed and got more than I could ever imagine at his baby shower. It all now resides in my kitchen since baby room is still in progress haha. So a rant and a rave.

GTKY Question: What is the one thing you will eat or drink after having baby? Cinnamon streusel cake. The whole cake. And not GD related, but please a glass of wine.

Team Blue? Team Pink or Team Green? Have you decided on LO's name? Team Blue. He is a James Allen the 3rd.

  • @bookworm8622 I've eaten cheesecake before and it doesn't trip my numbers- but I don't eat the crust so maybe you can indulge a bit since it's more about the fat content of the cheesecake than the actual carb content.  I'm not sure how much the pumpkin will affect it but it probably won't be by much.

@landJ13 YES YES YES on the wine!

  • How are your numbers this week?
all have been good! I'm pretty proud of myself since my once high fasting numbers have steadily been in the 70-80's for a solid 2 weeks now! Though I don't know why/how but I'll def take credit :)

How many week along are you?

    34+3

    Any rants, raves or questions?

today my boss emailed me informing me that she signed me up for a mandatory training on 12/5. I'm due 12/3. We've had this convo 168 times. Pretty sure she's in denial about this whole baby thing.

Also- weird random shooting pains in my legs! Coming from my hip area and down my thighs, not sure what that's about but ain't nobody got time for that!

GTKY Question: What is the one thing you will eat or drink after having baby?

Boston cream donut, or maybe a cinnamon roll? A million cups of creamer loaded coffee that's not decaf! And as much pasta as my body can handle! (Also is anyone else dying seeing all the Halloween candy in the stores?! I want all the almond joys, Reese's, and peanut butter snickers!)

Team Blue? Team Pink or Team Green? Have you decided on LO's name?

team blue here! No official name yet, we wanna see the little guy before deciding but we do have it narrowed down to a few!

  • So my doctor was supposed to call me with my 3 hour results today but didnt. However, the lab just emailed me my results. I'm so confused. It lists 2 ranges for each hour. According to one I passed and the other I failed.

    Fasting: 89 (range is  < 95)
    1 hour: 171 (range is < 180)
    2 hour: 136 (range is < 155)
    3 hour: 138 (range is < 140)

Second range next to the numbers...
    Fasting: 89 (65-99)
    1 hour: 171 (120-170)
    2 hour: 136 (70-139)
    3 hour: 138 (65-99)

    Does anyone understand this?

    Pregnancy Ticker

  • How are your numbers this week?  Pretty good, when I'm able to test.  I've run out of strips twice now because MD wrote to "test as directed" - going to ask them to rewrite the script at my appointment on Thursday (or see if I can cut down my testing since my numbers haven't been bad!)

How many weeks along are you?  32 + 2

Any rants, raves or questions?  See above about the running out of strips issue.  And I should have figured something was up because I'm a pharmacist, so I have some understanding of how these things work!  (Even though I haven't worked retail for years, I'm well aware that insurance companies like very SPECIFIC orders!)

GTKY Question: What is the one thing you will eat or drink after having baby?  French fries and a milkshake!

Team Blue? Team Pink? or Team Green? Have you decided on LO's name?  We are Team Pink and Little Miss's name is Mara Grace.

    Lilypie First Birthday tickers

  • How are your numbers this week?  I have had several highs, but they were around the same time that the hubs and I were arguing a lot and I was feeling pretty down, so I am going to blame it on that.

How many week along are you?  31+3

Any rants, raves or questions?  Just irritated that one day the same meal will provide higher numbers than the previous day.

GTKY Question: What is the one thing you will eat or drink after having baby?  I want an asada burrito.  Or maybe a pizza.  Or possibly cheesecake.  Oh, and a CULVER'S CONCRETE MIXER.  Wait, yup, concrete mixer first.

Team Blue? Team Pink or Team Green? Have you decided on LO's name?  Pink, Daphne.  Haven't figured out a middle name.  Poor 2nd kid. :P

  • How are your numbers this week? Better, they were worried about my fasting numbers before, I would get up, have MS and then test.  I started testing the minute I wake up.  Literally, my alarm goes off, I turn on the flashlight on my phone, then I do a test.  I can't even get up to wash my hands because that makes me sick and getting sick makes my sugar spike for some reason, so I have to wash my hands before I go to bed.  Since doing this they have been under 90 every time.  @landj13 maybe you could try that? I'm sorry yours are struggling :(

I also had a spike this week with a PBJ sandwich.  I have been having sandwiches for lunch and been ok but I didn't correctly guestimate the number of carbs in jelly... and it hurt me.

How many week along are you? 30 +5

Any rants, raves or questions? Rant: I didn't realize how much GD really effects things, I thought my diet and keeping it in limits was making me "normal" but the other night I had 2 tacos on low carb tortillas and was under but just barely.  DH had 8 tacos and was drinking a beer while I was testing so he had me do a test on him... and he was like 20 points lower :(

Rave: I had a breastfeeding class Monday night and a tour of our birthing center last night and it just made this so much more real... it is getting close.  And I finally meet with my OB Friday so I can get all of my GD questions answered by her finally!

GTKY Question: What is the one thing you will eat or drink after having baby? Reese's. McDonalds fries. and everything else, but those will be first!

Team Blue? Team Pink or Team Green? Have you decided on LO's name?
We know the sex but are not telling (and who knows what family/friends have found me on here) so team green.  And we had both names picked out before we knew the sex.

@phoebecar My husband will be out of town this weekend, and I found an old Cheesecake Factory gift card while I was cleaning recently, so I might have to test the waters with this on Saturday! I have been eating my baby shower cake and not had any spikes, so hopefully I can control myself and portion one slice out
  • @ajstevenson It appears that you failed one of the areas of the test but in order to get diagnosed with GD I think you have to fail 2 of the areas, but I'm not certain on that.  I failed my one hour so badly that the two hour and fasting which I passed became irrelevant.  Your failing number isn't that far outside of normal so they may let you pass without a GD diagnosis but keep a watch on you and baby's growth.

Also just thought that maybe the 2 different ranges of numbers could indicate one for pregnant people and one for non-pregnant people. I know your numbers can be higher if you are not pregnant and have diabetes in general.  But again, I'm not 100% sure why the lab would send 2 different sets of criteria.  Maybe your OB will call today with additional clarification for you. FX for a no GD diagnosis- even though I think we are pretty great group here! :)

Y'all we FINALLY decided on names this morning.  We have one for a boy and one for a girl.  It only took us 32+5 to figure out something for this baby! I still feel so behind in preparation for this baby and I don't think I'll make it to my induction date....

  • How are your numbers this week? Great! this is my first week of testing. I'm usually between 75 and 80 for fasting and average about 110 - 1 hour after meals.

How many week along are you?  31 + 4

Any rants, raves or questions? I'm not sleeping. I have pregnancy induces carpal tunnel and my hands are killing me at night. I can't find an acceptable comfortable position to sleep in.

GTKY Question: What is the one thing you will eat or drink after having baby?  Ham Hoagie and a cherry coke

Team Blue? Team Pink or Team Green? Have you decided on LO's name? Blue. no first name yet, but we have a middle name.

  • @1982babies and @phoebecar so I called my doctors office this morning and asked for clarification. They said I passed. When I asked about the two ranges she said that one is for pregnant patients and the other non-pregnant. Would be nice if it said that on the results sheet!!

So as it turns out I'm A-okay and won't be joining the GD Club. I have to say that I'm super impressed with all the positivity I've seen in you ladies and hope that your journeys continue to do well. We're all in the home stretch!

    Pregnancy Ticker

  • @ajstevenson YAY for the awesome diagnosis and passing the test!  I'm glad your OB's  office was able to tell you it was for 2 different sets of people, not sure why the lab would include non-pregnant people's limits on the test they sent you, but as long as your OB's office is happy, that's fantastic!  We can always induct you as an honorary member :)
  • My friend that just delivered in June had GD. She was telling me about some really good recipes she had that she frequently used during her diagnosis. I'll see if I can get them and share them with you ladies!

  • Anyone started on weekly NSTs yet? I start next week and haven't seen them mentioned here yet. 32 week ultrasound went well, baby is 5lbs2oz! Estimates of course.
  • @LandJ13 I have my biweekly appt with my OB tonight, so I'll ask about NSTs, but so far it hasn't been mentioned. My friend who had GD and gave birth in June only did one NST about 3 days before they induced her (3 days after due date).
  • I start mine on Monday but had one last Tuesday when I went in for my steroid shot since I had been having some annoying BH contractions.
  • @bookworm8622 my regular OB has not started them, it's the ATU unit that is handling my GD. My OB said they will start them also at 36 weeks.

@phoebecar I feel better knowing it's routine since you are starting too.
  • @landj13 I think I'll get them once a week, but am unsure.  Honestly they are kind of nice- laying there listening to LO's heartbeat for an entire 15 minutes.  I really enjoyed that aspect of it.
  • I found out yesterday that my NSTs will start with my next appointment at 34 weeks.

  • My levels have been high this week and the nurse practitioner mentioned medications at my appointment on Monday. My fasting levels are supposed to be under 95 and have pretty consistently been 98-105. Some of my meals have been slightly over the 140 (142-144). I've been really sick this week so my activity level is down and I'm also on a zpack, cough medicine, SF cough drops-- so I'm hoping it's just that combination.

i really don't want to go on any medication for this

How are your numbers this week? Good, no unexplained spikes.

How many week along are you? 32

Any rants, raves or questions? Rant - GD diet prep is all consuming.  Rave - saw the dietitian this week and she raved about how I'm doing.  She also laughed when I said it has taken over my life and said that's how I know I'm doing it right.  Question - My fasting numbers are in range, but at the higher end of it.  I'm wondering if I have a snack when I get up in the night for the bathroom if that will make them lower.  May try it out one of these nights.

GTKY Question: What is the one thing you will eat or drink after having baby? I'm thinking pizza, a cupcake, and champagne.  Sounds like an ideal meal right about now!  In reality I'll probably be so used to apple slices and peanut butter that I just continue to eat as I have been.

Team Blue? Team Pink or Team Green? Have you decided on LO's name? Team pink; haven't decided on her name.  Have a couple that we're toying with, but nothing set in stone.

ETA: Feel better @ashleygorokhovsky!  Hope the spikes are just related to being sick.

  • I found out yesterday that my NSTs will start with my next appointment at 34 weeks.
While these aren't fun, I figure it's a nice little break from work/home life and plan to bring books with me.  I knew from the beginning that I Would be having them due to being 34 and having pre-e last time.  I am considering it a break from home life. ;)

  • Hi-
Any experienced ladies help me understand whats going on?

I haven't been officially diagnosed with GD, but I failed my 1 hour (136), so I opted to test my blood sugar for a week instead of the 3 hour (that drink made me feel terrible). Everything looked great last week- and I thought I was done, but the doc said to do it for another week. This morning I had a big bagel and 1/2 soda (and I eat really slow- probably took me 30+ min to finish) 1 hour post meal testing was 142, 2 hour only went down to 132, then because I was curious, I took a test again 15 min later and it actually went up to 133 ??

I've had pizza, bagels and all that in the last week and not had any problems- but now I'm unsure... is this something?

  • @Toller I don't have any experience with how normal people process but I know if I had a big bagel and half of a sofa my numbers would be higher. I've also found that certain fingers give different numbers at the exact same time. So that might explain the 1 point increase. my sister in law failed the 1 hour with the exact same number as you but passed the 3 hour with flying colors.

Oh interesting! I had my second and last pre-delivery visit with my GD team on Monday and they didn't mention anything. I'm only 33w 4d but they said unless I have any spikes I should just keep doing what I'm doing and come back 8 weeks after for the follow-up test.
  • You may be more of GD rockstar since nothing is working on my fasting numbers. Plus I'm old, that might have something to do with it.
  • I found out yesterday that my NSTs will start with my next appointment at 34 weeks.

I'm not sure if they are watching me a little closer due to age (I'm also 34), or if this is standard procedure for my OB office since this is my first baby.  They have me scheduled for my next four appointments - every Monday in November - to make sure I could get morning visits (which is better with my work schedule.)  It will be nice to be away from work for a little while!

  • I'm definitely not young (I'm 30), but I also have polycystic ovarian syndrome, so I went on a mostly gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free diet in order to get pregnant without meds (which surprisingly worked!). My GD team actually told me I had to eat more carbs or risk ketosis. But I do speculate that pregnant or not I would have failed the glucose tolerance test because of my PCOS, but I guess we'll find out in February!
  • What are you ladies eating for breakfast?  I have been making overnight oats, but I got sick of them already, so I have had a banana with some peanut butter the last 3 days.  I just had a followup and he said as long as less than 25% of my numbers are high, I should be able to stay off of meds.  I know that just by typing this, I am probably going to end up on Metformin.

I am so sick of eggs, peanut butter, and cheese.  They told me to eat between 45-60 carbs at each meal, but if I go below that am I in trouble?  I had 65 carbs at a meal last week and a beautiful reading after.  Sometimes if I eat closer to 45, I test high.  WTF BODY.

This is like a big science experiment and I am not a science person. :pensive:

  • @1982babies my dietician actually put me on 15-30 carbs for breakfast because your numbers react different in the morning?  Then 45-60 for other meals.  I usually stay around 30 carbs but I probably could handle more based on my numbers the last few weeks.  My breakfast go to's are usually those Nature Valley crunchy bars, one package is about 29 grams, or toast (whole wheat) with peanut butter and milk to drink. Or bacon, eggs and toast. I really haven't had any bad numbers.  But I am definitely missing the carby breakfast foods.  Oh also an egg mcmuffin is usually perfect too when I am in a hurry.  DH keeps suggesting eggs for other meals and he doesn't understand how sick of them I am... I don't even like them much normally.

  • Ugh i eat another egg, blah. I do a half of whole wheat English muffin with peanut butter for first breakfast then 2 hours later I do a cup of plain oatmeal with a tiny bit of
brown sugar and some nuts. Oddly my number for my oatmeal (snack?) is usually better then the English muffin (breakfast).

@1982Babies im on metformin. I started at 500mg and it did nothing,  he upped me to 1000mg this week. I've had one good fasting out of 2 since the increase. Just an FYI, the increased dose has had some interesting side effects. I've had to make the fast walk to the bathroom more than once, big change from the normal constipation.
  • I will fully agree breakfast is easily the hardest meal of the day food wise and number wise. I am always starving hungry so I do decaf tea with 2 splendas (which is just as great as it sounds..eye roll) so I can use my carbs on food. Lately I've been doing a whole wheat English muffin with peanut butter and a handful of grapes (no more than 10-12) and my numbers have been good. I was having high or borderline fasting numbers every morning when I first started but found that having my bedtime snack later at night helps with that, and now I have more flexibility with my breakfast. It really is a science which sucks bc it seems to be totally different for diff people!

Hmm, I have those bars in my cupboard.  I will give them a shot with some milk.  Anything McDonald's sounds good, and I really can't stand McDonald's as a fast food joint anymore.... Eggs are about the only food aversion I have had this pregnancy, so it really sucked when I got this diagnosis and had to start eating them for breakfast. Thanks! @BenNSarah
