Falling

Ok, hated to start a single thread but looking for thoughts on this... wasn't sure where this would go...

Has anyone fallen during pregnancy?  Especially 1st trimester?

I feel like Google is no help... but I am 99% sure I'm OK since I didn't hit anything in my core/abdominal region when I landed.  Hit my left upper arm, left upper back/scapula area, bottom, and left calf.

I would think you should be fine. Still, I would stay aware of any cramping or spotting. Does your OB have an after hours line you can call? Might be worth it for some peace of mind.

  • Ouch! I hope you're not too badly injured. The baby should be fine but if you experience any major cramping or bleeding I'd go get checked out. If not, just relax and take it easy.

  • I fell in my first pregnancy, slipped on ice around 8 weeks.  I happened to have an appt the following day and the dr said to just watch for typical warning signs like extreme cramping, bleeding etc.  She did say that because I hadn't had any spotting prior that I should go in if it happened in the next couple days.  All was fine and I went on to have a complication free pregnancy!
  • Chances are you're fine. We're talking about something the size of a blueberry- it's very well protected right now

  • Thanks ladies, that is what I was thinking as well... as long as no spotting or other typically not great symptoms... I think I should be ok
  • Yeah I second the "you should be fine".  Baby is so small and well cushioned. I took a spill while 6 months with DS (nasty ice and we have a sloped driveway) and everything was OK.  When you're further along always just follow your gut, but usually baby is pretty well protected.
  • I fell down a flight of metal stairs at 28 weeks with my son. Fell right into my abdomen and then slid down the remaining five steps. The steps were serated metal so I cut through my clothes and got pretty bruised up. Because I fell onto my stomach, my OB requested an emergency ultrasound. Baby was fine and so was I. Luckily, this early in pregnancy baby has tons of cushion and support so I think you should be fine as well. If you are still concerned, a call to your doctors office wouldn't be unwarranted.
  • (Preface with IANAD).  I believe one of the major concerns with falling (or impact) is that the force could cause the placenta to become detached or partially detached from the uterus.  Since the placenta is still forming during first tri (and everything is still smaller/well cushioned) I think there is less risk.  But in these scenarios I always recommend calling your OB's office anyway, just to check.
