Babymoon/Family Vacation

Anyone planning a babymoon or family vacation before baby? We're thinking about a trip early this spring. I like all inclusive beach vacations (so convenient!) but with Zika it seems like a lot of tropical destinations are out. I was also thinking about Disney but that might be overwhelming with a toddler under 2 and super preggo. Any ideas?

DH, DS (who will be 21 months) and I are going to Spain for a week in March. DH's family is from there and, coincidentally, we went a couple years ago when I was 32weeks pregnant with DS. I had issues with Braxton Hicks while I was there because of all the walking around, but it was fine otherwise.

My suggestion, though, is someplace warm and easy. Especially if you go when you are farther along. Due to Zika and other infectious diseases all over the world, you should always check in with your provider before leaving the country to determine exposure risk and prophylaxis if applicable.

    ETA:
On a side note, we'll be headed to southeast FL in December and I have no concerns about exposure, even though there has been at least one comfirmed case in Dade county I think. but my PCP has no concerns and the CDC marks the area as low/no risk.

  • I've been thinking about it as well. Zika is definitely a beach detractor and I heard overseas flights are horrible for preggo circulation. My friend's doc advised her against it and she ended up with a mess load of varicose veins when the plane landed. Has anyone else heard of stories like that?

Meh; I was advised to get a good pair of compression socks, and that was all.  I travel frequently and checked with my doc before we TTC.  They didn't mention any concerns other than compression socks and not traveling after a certain date.

  • Last year we went to Whistler on May long weekend and we were wanting to make it an annual family vacation. We did a lot of hiking, walking through the Olympic village and did a Treetrek tour. Not sure if I'll be into the hiking this year but walking around the village would be nice! It's a 4 hour drive away from our home though at the end of May so I'm not sure if it will work out this upcoming year with me being due June 1.. my daughter came early so we might just head out to Vancouver for a couple days instead. It wouldn't be so bad to deliver at BC Women's Hospital while we're there
  • I am graduating collage may 3rd so I want to go somewhere right after to relax before we have the baby. My parents own a beach house in the outer banks so we may go there since it's a shortish drive for us but I would love to do a cruise but Zika is always a thought

I think varicose veins are mostly hereditary, like stretch marks. Some pregnant women are just destined to get them.

We went to South FL to visit family when I was 30 weeks with DD1; I didn't have any problems. It did make me pop overnight, though. I hadn't really been showing and woke up the first morning requiring a new wardrobe. My husband's face that first morning was hysterical.

We'll do South FL late winter/early Spring this year, as well. Not because of the baby, but just because it's a cheap vacation.

  • We were just talking about doing a little family-of-three-moon in December! But I can't decide what we should do because a long car ride with our one year old doesn't seem appealing.

Last year we went to Seattle for our babymoon and it was wonderful to have some time with DH.

I second the compression socks and add walking around a lot. Even a short flight can make you swell in later pregnancy. You just have to move more often and drink lots of water.

  • We are taking our 3 year old to Disney world for his birthday and Christmas. I'll be just in the 2nd trimester.

Probably a beach trip early May if midwife thinks it is safe.

  • We went to San Francisco when I was about 30 weeks pregnant with my DS. We had a blast. My OB advised against traveling mostly because of all the sitting but I just made sure to walk around. Also, my OB printed off my medical records to take with me just in case. I would wait to book the flight (if you're taking one) until about two weeks before the trip.
  • We have a couple of weekends planned for the holidays, but we will probably plan a getaway for the spring. Maybe Tahoe or Big Bear (California mtn resorts) or Park City, UT in April? Haven't decided yet

  • We always go open our cabin in mid-may so we will do that if my Dr says it's ok. It's only 4 hours away so I hope I can go at least once before baby!

  • This isn't really either, but we had been having trouble TTC and had a couple of chemical pregnancies in the process.  So we were overwhelmed and decided to book a trip to Hawaii for February.  We knew it would make things a bit tighter for us but we also knew we needed it and we both love Hawaii.
Well we booked it and 2 weeks later found out we were pregnant.  I jokingly told H after we booked it that we'll get pregnant now.  Sure enough, we were.
So I'll be about 5.5 months pregnant taking a 10 hour flight to Maui, renting a convertible, and hiking a minimum of 50 miles.  Can't wait!

  • We'll be going somewhere in April/May.  Probably just DH and I.  My older brother is getting married (yay!!), they don't have a date set yet, but I know it'll be in one of those months.  I'm hoping to take a long weekend and make it more of a little vacay for us.
  • We were invited to go with family to Disney in January. I've been pretty sick, but am hoping to feel better by then. DD will only be 15 months old, but I think she'll have fun. I really want to take her on a trip while she's still an only child so I'm looking forward to it.
  • I'm in a wedding in St. Pete Florida in December so we're makinga vacation out of it and spending a few days at Disney! I won't get to ride as much but I'm really excited.
I'm hoping we'll be able to go on a little babymoon in the Spring for our 6th anniversary but no clue where or when yet.

  • We might take a family trip next year - late spring/early summer.  We're thinking of going south and hitting Diggerland, Sesame Place and Hershey Park.  I won't be able to go on much, but our youngest won't be able to either so I guess we'll hang while the little guy has a ball.
  • We're going to try to make our annual Longboat Key, FL trip.  We will likely drive it, which is 24 hours, but we'll break it up into three days.

  • We leave for Disney in a week.  So excited for these memories with just the three of us!  My 3yo son is beyond excited... He has NO idea what he's in for!
  • Love all the Disney talk in this thread! DH and I actually just decided this morning to book a babymoon at Disney for the end of January, which will include my birthday. I turned to DH on our morning walk and said, "I really miss Disney. How about a babymoon?" And it was a done deal! We booked our flight about an hour later.

Sesame Place is really awesome for little ones (and had a surprisingly good amount of stuff my 1 year old could do, we went when the water park was closed). Hershey is also a lot of fun. PM me if you want more info.
  • Two questions..

    1. Has anyone had good experiences taking a child under 2 to Disney? I figured we could do some rides, some shows, and maybe just stay at the hotel and hit the pool a couple of days.

    2. Any suggestions on locations in the continental US for families with toddlers? Something resort style with pools, playground, restaurants on premises and then toddler-friendly attractions (ie. zoo, aquarium, etc) nearby?

    Thanks!

    1. I've never personally done it, but know people who have and have had good experiences. If you go to their website you can look at all of the rides in each park that don't have a height requirement. Some of the rides might be a little scary though because they're in the dark and can get loud. I would take them on the Small World ride before taking them on rides like Peter Pan and even the Winnie the Pooh ride.

    2. If when you say Disney, you mean Disney World, I would suggest staying at Orange Lake. It's a resort, but they're always running deals for non-members to stay. They have several pools and playgrounds on site and the rooms are very nice. It's 5-10 minutes from Magic Kingdom, Downtown Disney, City Walk, and the outlet mall.
  •  We're taking a weeklong trip to Savannah, GA in February for my 30th birthday. I'll be 20 to 21 weeks, so I don't think it's too big of a deal. We booked it before I got pregnant but I don't think it should be too bad since the flights are only a couple hours apiece.

    @mamaelle27

DD2 was 18 months the first time we went. Granted, the trip was focused around DD1, but DD2 survived. I wore her in the Ergo when she needed naps and we just continued to ride rides with DD1. DD2 slept through most of MK both days we were there, but was up for almost all of AK- she loved that.

We we did it again last year, when DD2 was 2.5yo and she was much more in to MK.

Unless you're staying right near MK, I don't recommend attempting to leave for naps. Entering and leaving MK can easily take an hour. Paying to stay at the like the Contemporay is only something I'd recommend to someone insisting on making naps happen.

We've also stayed at Orange Lake and loved it. You could easily spend just a week there, there's so much to do.

  • @mamaelle27 that's great to hear about there being some things for your 1yo to do!  I know Diggerland and Hershey Park will have way more for DS, so I was hoping we could find a good mix of things for DD at Sesame Place.  I'll definitely PM you when the trip gets closer for some pointers.  Thanks!
  • We have a few annual weekend getaways coming up. A trip to NY in November to see family, a weekend in DC to see the national tree, and a weekend at the Gaylord National Harbor to see the Ice show and do some shopping. We are local to DC so for us it's just fun stuff to do with the kids.

We were planning a Disney trip for next Thanksgiving but now I'm rethinking it since the baby will only be 5 months.

  • I think it would be AWESOME.  Never done a cruise pregnant and I would just check on the cruise lines rules, but I would think that early, you should be OK.
  • @sejica, that sounds like an awesome cruise. Have you been on a cruise before? I recently went on my first one (before pregnancy) and was surprised how seasick/dizzy I felt, so just beware if that's a problem that usually affects you. Also, be careful about what you eat from buffets since pregnant women are more prone to food borne illness, and about hand-washing and hygiene habits, so you pick up as few germs as possible. Sorry, didn't mean to be a kill joy.

We usually fly, so I'm probably super naive as to how horrible it will really be.
  • We are going to Vegas with another couple in March and I'll be 27/28 weeks. I'm a little nervous I'll be a party pooper, since with my last pregnancies I had a hard time walking long periods of time without being in awful pelvic pain starting in 2nd tri. We're mainly just going so my gf and I can see the Backstreet Boys (don't judge! Lol). If nothing else, her and her hubby can do all the walking they want since they've never been there and this will be the 3rd time dh and I go, so we've already seen everything we want to. I plan to utilize the bus as much as possible since taxi drivers scare the crap out of me :D

Me too! I'm from New England and live in VT now, but I went to Savannah for grad

  • We are doing a massive family vacation to Disney in April (planned long before our unexpected pregnancy).  I'll be 30 weeks.  There's going to be 11 adults and 8 kids in 1 big rented house for a week.  I plan on doing my best impersonation of shamu and just floating in the pool whenever we aren't at the park.  Luckily for my SIL, she'll have a built-in person to watch her 13 month old when people want to do all the rides.

That sounds amazing! We did a cruise during my first pregnancy and I ate all the things.  I gained 60lbs with my first pregnancy and I've decided to blame the cruise for most of it but it was sooooooo worth it.  ;)

  • @sejica Check into the cruiseline you're wanting to use.  Many of them say you can't be 25 weeks pregnant or more and go on the cruise.  They just don't have the medical staff or capacity to handle it if something were to happen.
We looked into it for Christmas the year I was pregnant with DD.  I would have been 30 weeks pregnant and was so glad we looked into it beforehand.
