GTKY- Irrational Fears

I have my regular irrational fear, which is taxidermy/fur/dead animals. I know it can't hurt me, but my fear is real and it's paralyzing. Anyway, my NEW pregnancy-related fear, based solely off watching way too much ID Discovery, is that when I get bigger, a psycho will try to lure me away and cut out my baby. It's part of why the Facebook group makes me uneasy. I know that this won't happen, but that's why it's irrational, right? It's not a fear that affects my daily life in any way at all. I'm trying to make it clear that this isn't anything more than a thought in my mind after watching too much TV.

Anyway, what are some of your irrational fears, pregnancy-related or not?

  • Fish, ketchup, ET, being murdered, and anything about windows at night, I hate looking at them and being near them.

Im just a little bit of an anxiety prone person.

  • I am terrified of the dark and always think I am going to see a ghost or have a hand grab me from under the bed.

Mass shootings. If I am in a new place, I sometimes think of where I would hide or how I would escape if someone were to come in with a gun.

Driving on the interstate gives me major anxiety.

Walking past cars closely at night time. I'm afraid someone is under them waiting to grab me and pull me under. I will literally hop into my car as fast as possible if it's dark.

@jellybeanqueen13 unfortunately for me the mass shootings isn't an irrational fear. There was one while I was in school in 2008.

  • Mine's boring, I sometimes get terrified on the plane, mostly when there's turbulence or even hint of a storm. I drank 3 gin and tonics before takeoff last time, when we were stuck on the runway. It does help but I know it's unhealthy. As a frequent flyer with status, this is actually a pretty big problem in my life.

  • I'm irrationally afraid of ceiling fans coming "loose" and decapitating me.  I'm also afraid that the elevator car I'm riding in will detach and send me plummeting to my death.

@WombThereItIs My cousin is also afraid of ET.  It's one of my favorite movies so when I like something my FB feed, it often shows up on her feed and she flips out. I do it on purpose now.  But I'll make sure not to share any ET gifs here.

@Jellybeanqueen13  I don't think your mass shooting fear is irrational.  That's the age we live in with active shooter drills and disgruntled employees/customers.  Very scary.

  • You guys are all freaking me out here!  I'm the biggest wuss ever. I may watch way too much Law and Order SVU, so I get anxious when running after dark, when we're the only family at the playground at the park, stuff like that.
  • @sarah0985 That is terrifying. @NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot I agree. It is so scary. I hope to never encounter something like this in my lifetime.  :#

  • @NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot Oh my goodness, one of my friends did have a ceiling fan fall on her!  There was apparently some pin in it holding it together that had been working itself loose, and when she pulled the chain to turn it off, it fell out of the ceiling!  She hurt her leg, but was otherwise fine. Super scary!!   So, apparently if that's something that scares you, you should always turn the fan off at the wall switch instead of using the pull chain.
  • Lighting...I have a near panic attack if I am outside. While inside I avoid windows and cannot take a bath or shower if it is storming. We had a passing storm the other day and was out of the shower, dripping wet as soon as I heard thunder!
  • ET, windows and mirrors at night, open dark closet doors at night, and whales.

  • Really tall people. I once did a volunteer event with 2 KC Chiefs players and me teaching Zumba to the elderly while standing right in between them was the longest 20 minutes of my life.

  • Oh man, mine is going to sound so lame in comparison. Stickers. I'm terrified of stickers.
  • Mine is being stuck in an elevator... ridiculous right?

  • @MollyandD - I have the same fear of some nut cutting out my baby! That case in Colorado freaked me out. The poor woman was just trying to buy baby clothes! I will never buy anything off of Craigslist without DH with me. Ever.

I refuse to swim in fresh water bodies of water UNLESS they are crystal clear. Alligators freak me out more than I can express. I know this is not entirely unreasonable, but I feel like it is since I am an avid SCUBA diver and have no issues with any salt water creatures. Alligators are evil.

  • I'm terrified of birds! Like full blown phobia! I can never take my kids to an aviary or to feed the ducks

  • @MamaMiller - Not to freak you out even more...but I was almost struck by lightning when I was in high school. I was standing in the middle of my kitchen, it wasn't raining, and I hadn't heard any thunder. It blew a hole in the roof of the house! Luckily, it didn't strike me directly, but the sink I was standing next to- the firefighters said I likely would've died if I'd been any closer.

  • @starphish18 you and my daughter would not get along- she has a sticker obsession. It's a little ridiculous. Stickers all over our house, all the time. She puts them on me to "save for later" a lot too.
  • My irrational fear is the the ceiling is going to cave, especially when I'm in a gym doing a class and 30 people are jumping up and down and we are on any floor that is above the ground level.  In college one of my friends 2nd floors caved in on their living room, and if someone was sitting down there, they would've died.  If I hear a floor creak or isn't stable, it totally freaks me out!!!!!!

@wombthereitis  Oooh, please explain the ketchup one!!!

Mine is if it's late at night and I am up washing my hands, I will not look in the mirror - I'm afraid of the bloody Mary thing coming true!!
This made me chuckle considering you have a bloody costume in your siggy below

  • Mine is being stuck in traffic under or on a bridge. Especially if there's a huge truck crossing the opposite direction. I remember having a panic attack once because a truck caused so much vibration that I thought the bridge was going to collapse while I was on it.

  • @kayemjay2 - that is crazy! I would have died out of shock! I avoid the kitchen and most appliance too during thunderstorms- I will watch TV but do it at a distance.

PS- it currently looks like a monsoon outside right now- I may have to hide under my desk for safety!
  • @Jellybeanqueen13 mass shootings are a big source of anxiety for me as well, but I agree with PPs that it isn't actually that irrational (sadly).

@Abby7 I also get nervous about flying and have a really hard time when there's turbulence.  It hasn't always been the case, but it has for the past few years.  The bigger issue for me is when family members fly.  DH and DS may fly across without me in a month or two and I am already having serious anxiety about it.

My biggest irrational fear is getting cancer.  It isn't totally irrational I suppose (cancer is a more real threat than dying in a plane crash) but for a healthy 30-year-old woman I'm definitely a bit on the irrational side with how much I worry about it.  My dad died of cancer a year and a half ago and I know that is the source of it - I never worried about cancer until he got it - but I wish it didn't affect me in that way.  Any health issue at all and I start worrying that it is some weird incurable cancer that is going to take me away from my DS.  Reading over this, I probably should have done some counseling after my dad died to deal with this...
  • Oh, also, for any Pacific Northwesterners out there, I am TERRIFIED of the Cascadia earthquake (the huge earthquake that was written about in the New Yorker).  I live in Colorado now but my whole family is in Portland and every time we go to visit I worry about it.  My mom's house is an old brick house that would very possibly collapse in the earthquake, and my sister and mom live on opposite sides of the river from each other so they frequently drive over bridges that are known to be highly likely to collapse when the quake happens.
  • @mcvgal how tall?  My fiancé is 6'8".  Would that bother you?

I don't know that I have any really irrational fears.  I am freakily afraid of snakes.  I mean I will dead run a straight mile to get away from a 3 inch baby grass snake.  To me ANY snake is deadly because I'll kill myself trying to get away from it!!

  • @RainyDays86 and @Abby7, add me to the fear of flying list. I actual was never afraid of flying until I had DD, now I am terrified to the point of bawling uncontrollably for a week before any scheduled flight. MH and I went to NYC when she was 11 months old and I made him sign a letter saying who she goes to in case we die.

I am also afraid of the ocean. I won't go in past my knees. You never know what could be lurking.
  • OooOoOoOo, I love this thread!

Anyway, my irrational fear not pregnancy related has and always will be unnatural holes in the human body. I truly don't mind self expression. I've noticed it has grown increasingly popular to get gauges above/below the lips or even in the cheeks! Like I said I'm not against anyone expressing themselves and doing things they like/love. I just don't like the clear gages, in which you can see through the skin. It just gives me goose bumps and I freak out. One of my good friends has gauges, every once in a while she'll take them out and make me look through the hole to get over it. NUH UH! I also don't like when people post/share videos of gunshot wounds. I could go on and on, but I won't. lol

  • Since becoming a mother, I for sure, am a much more paranoid person. My husband and I went to a concert over the summer and I was freaking out the whole time about a shooting or bombing happening in the stadium. We once flew without DD and I was freaking out the whole plane ride. I never would have thought twice about these things before becoming a mother.
  • @MollyandD I can see why this would freak you out! I agree with @kayemjay2 , you won't find me buying something from craiglist without my SO present!

You never think these type of things will happen to you, but the world is full of people that are unstable. Living in a big city doesn't help my fears.

@WombThereItIs You reminded me of my SO's irrational fear. At night the curtains have to completely shut out any street light and the closet has to be closed or he can't sleep! He is afraid (not that he will admit it)of something/ someone jumping out.

  • @WombThereItIs You are the first person, in my life, that has the same irrational fear of ketchup. I don't know what it is about the stuff that grosses me out to the point of being afraid of it (kinda like roaches).

My other fear isn't irrational...I am terrified of my girls being kidnapped. With all the human trafficking going on in the world, it just scares me to death every time we go to a store or anywhere!

"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?...But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:26-27&33-34

Joining the ET bandwagon. That thing is just plain creepy. And swimming in really murky water. I work at an an environmental organization and look at a lot of water quality data. Ignorance is bliss in some situations. I'm also adding snorkeling to my list. I'm afraid I'll get run over by a boat with an outboard engine.
  • Ooh, I forgot one- biscuit cans! They TERRIFY me. I always have someone else open them.
My sister is the same way! She literally yelps and her hands fly up to her face, even from the other room!

For you, what about champagne bottles? Same thing?
  • @MamaMiller : the shower/lightning thing isn't irrational, it's an okay thing to be nervous about. I was always taught growing up to not bathe/wash hands/do anything with electricity and to stay in the car until the storm passes, and I suppose I subconsciously still follow those rules. My heart jumps into my throat when I dash from the car to the house during a downpour.
