NBR: Cookbooks

*Not Baby Related at all *Except if you count the fact that what we eat, they eat...

I love to read cookbooks, try new recipes, watch all the PBS/Food Channel shows I have time for... so when "Amazon's top 100 lifetime cookbooks" came out, I pretty much swooned reading the list. Some I've read, some I've never heard of!  https://www.cnn.com/2016/10/17/travel/amazon-100-books-for-a-lifetime-of-cooking/index.html

What's your favorite go-to cookbook? (Is it on this list?) Is it a beloved hand-me-down from someone, or a recommended pick, or a gem you found yourself? What do you love about it? Is it the types of food, the techniques, the questions it answers? Do the eye-candy photos make you drool? I'd love to hear your recommendations!

Re: NBR: Cookbooks

  • I like cookbooks that have pictures and nutritional information. I love the Skinnytaste cookbook.

  • I love the Pioneer Woman Cookbooks! All of her recipes have tons of pictures and they are actually recipes my family would eat without any crazy ingredients!

  • I like the idea of cookbooks and I like occasionally using them in my home decor, but I hate paper. So I now do all online. That being said, pinterest!

  • My go-to cookbook is a bridal edition one, can't remember the name, I think it's either Betty Crocker or Better Homes and Garden? Some of my best recipes have come out of that book: Cinnamon Rolls, wings and breakfast casserole.  Plus it has lots of beginner information for cooking temps, best parts of meats, etc.

    Me too!
  • I do everything online...I love the IDEA of cookbooks, but like that I can typical type a few ingredients plus the word "recipe" into google and find a bunch of recipes with reviews.
    Babysizer Cravings Pregnancy Tracker
  • The Better Homes and Gardens cookbook is by far my most valuable. I don't go for gimmicks, I want a good recipe for most anything across the board, and this cookbook provides it. Plus it has charts for things like poultry roasting, vegetable cooking, and grilling that give you the needed times and temperatures for all the different items in the category.

I actually have 3 different editions, the 1967 one that belonged to my grandmother, plus 2006 and 2016. I cook mostly off the more moderns ones but I sometimes try things from 1967 just for fun.

  • I've been looking forward to reading Chrissy Tiegen's Cravings too! My library has a waiting list a mile long. I might end up having to purchase it, which is ok, I've heard nothing but good things about it.  ;)
  • I like Better Homes and PW too.  I have all the PW cookbooks and I think 2 of them are signed.  I also enjoy a good church or association cookbook.  If you can get past all the recipes with mayo and 100 variations of fruit salad, they often have some great recipes.

  • I love cookbooks too! However, I find I rarely make anything out of anyone of them. I like the Six Sisters cookbooks but my best cookbook is Pinterest where I keep the recipes I'm actually interested in making.

  • Ooh, I love cookbooks!!!  When I'm being super fancy I love Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking (and I love the book My Life in France, obviously. I may be slightly Julia obsessed.).   For more everyday, I like cooks country and cooks illustrated recipes.  My MIL got me the Smitten Kitchen cookbook, and I have a few favorites from there. (Cheesey breakfast rolls instead of cinnamon rolls. Yum!)  I like Joy in theory, but I really rarely use it!  Oh, and the Yummly app is great!  I put in all of my family's myriad of allergies, and it is able to find recipes that everyone can eat!
  • Pinterest, allrecipes and the foodnetwork are my go tos.  I love reading reviews before investing time in a recipe.  I also like the reviews to see how people made it better.

agree with this- this one is my favorite- have my very well loved grandmothers cook book and a updated. My mother flips homes in DC. One of her last flips had many treasures still in it. I took an old recipe box filled with 100s of hand written recipes. I believe the box is filled with love.
  • I Pinterest all new recipes I try. It's easy to type in what I am looking for and have multiple options pop up. However, my mom gave me a copy of our church's cookbook and in it are recipes my grandma (who is no longer living) and my mom submitted. It's fun to flip through the cookbook and see names I recognize under recipes.
  • I LOVE cookbooks. I have a lot of them... I think everyone should have the Better Homes & Gardens one... it's so classic! I have a newer edition but I love my mom's old one too, some slight variations.
I love the Bread Maker's Apprentice and the Bread Bible. Those two books are kind of extreme but definitely helped me start making better bread.
I LOVE Lydia's Commonsense Italian Cooking

The New Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day has completely changed the way I make bread. It's so easy! You just dump the ingredients in a bowl and put in the fridge. No kneading, and the dough lasts for a couple weeks. Highly recommended if you want to make effortless bread of any kind! The Homemade Pantry (made by the daughter of the Moosewood cookbooks author) is also great if you want to make more of your own staples and snacks, instead of buying them from the store (there's even a recipe that tastes like wheat thins).
  • Ina Garten's "Back to Basics" is one of my favorites!

  • Try the Naked Cookbook by Tess Ward. I didn't thing I'd use it so much. Healthy and easy (perfect for pregnancy with some changes in the ingredients). I like Candle 79 for the pictures. oh and Egg by Michael Ruhlman. I like Pinterest too but I somehow prefer Food 52 (than I Pinterest the recipes).
  • I am loving all of these suggestions! The BHG is an oldie but goodie; the plaid on the cover just makes me think "food", LOL, j/k. I just added a few titles to my library ebook queue, and can't wait for them to come in. Thanks, everyone!   :)
  • We have 3 volumes of a family cookbook that come in pretty clutch. I also like Pinterest and Cooking Light (recipe collection more than the monthly magazine).
