Anatomy scan

Anyone go for their anatomy scan recently? Ours is Friday and I cannot wait... We did no genetic testing at all so we will be finding out if our little one is a he or she on Friday. Any tips for making sure baby is moving around? I heard Gatorade. I'm worried about getting our hopes up to find out and LO having his or her legs closed lol. Anyone experience that?

Re: Anatomy scan

  • I think as long as you eat and drink something like a half hour or so before that's said to possibly get LO moving :) Thankfully baby has cooperated for each of my pregnancies and we determined sex. I know it doesn't work that way for some people but from stories I've heard, the techs try extra hard to get baby to move around if he/she is being stubborn and some places will schedule another ultrasound for the near future... Good luck at your scan!

  • I drank OJ before my first one and she was moving but not like crazy! I think just eating and drinking something will help. I was thinking of doing the OJ again!
  • @kfras  We haven't had our anatomy scan yet, but we did an elective gender ultrasound back at 14 weeks, and the little dude was NOT cooperative. He was apparently napping on my "very comfy" anterior placenta, making it very difficult to see his tiny face/boyparts. FWIW, the tech just gave me a really cold glass of water and that got him wiggling. So if yours is stubborn/shy, you can totally handle it at the appointment itself. Good luck!

  • Mine's not until the 28th and I'm getting so impatient!! I drank a bit of a Sonic slushie before DS's and the tech was still able to get all his measurements though he was moving around a bit. :)

  • I had mine last week! I didn't do anything but drink water before. Our little guy didn't want to show us he was a guy at first, but as the scan went on he moved around on his own and we were able to see! Also, like someone said above, if the tech doesn't get to see everything they need to see you might get to come back and have another chance to see your little one. :)

::side story:: Once the tech started my ultrasound we realized that her screen was working but the screen that DH and I were looking at was not. After messing with the cords a little bit she decided that we would have to wait for another room to open up. Which meant wiping off the jelly and waiting 20 minutes or so with a full bladder and starting all over. OOF.

    Baby Boy: coming March 2017

  • We don't go until Halloween :(

  • We just had ours on Monday. I didn't do anything special to make baby move, but he was moving quite a bit on his own. But as PPs have said, it might be good to not have the LO move around too much. My tech and dr didn't have trouble measuring and finding all of the parts though, so a little bit of wiggle shouldn't be too much of a problem. We did an elective gender scan at 16 weeks (i think) and both times our LO was happy to show us he is a boy. haha no problems there. We also didn't do any genetic testing done, so it was great to see that from what they can see visually, baby looks 100% healthy (they even measured the fluid around the brain!).

  • We have ours tomorrow morning!! I was just told to drink water. Our baby moved around lots for the NT Scan, they weren't able to take the measurement, so I'm curious what Baby will do tomorrow, LOL. We do not want to know the gender so hopefully they'll be no slip ups!!
  • I had my AS on Tuesday and baby was sleeping when it started. At first the tech didn't think that she'd be able to get the measurements since he was curled up. A few minutes after she said we might have to come back, viola! he flipped over so she could measure his spine! I only drank water before hand and my bladder was really full so she had me empty my bladder to see if he would move off of it (this little guy LOVES sitting criss-cross-applesauce on my bladder). I don't think you want the baby to move too much, like PPs have said. They need to be still enough for the tech to get shots of their heart and brain which can be tricky of they are moving.

  • Ours is Wednesday! We had a boutique ultrasound when I was 16+3 and learned we are having a little boy. I had some Dr Pepper on ice 30 mins prior and he was a raging animal in there. My husband suggested that I should not have anything prior for the upcoming scan mostly because of the measurements, but also because our pictures of him from last time look like a blur! Have fun everyone!!

  • Mine isn't until 10/28, but with DS, I drank a bunch of OJ before the scan because I read that it would cause baby to move around. Um, nope. He was a total stinker and wouldn't move at all. The tech had to call the doctor in to get him to move into the right position. I just scheduled my scan for this baby and I was told not to do any kind of prep at all.

  • I have mine tomorrow- its in the morning so I will eat breakfast, hopefully that will make her move but not too much ;)
  • Ours is in a couple weeks - they said to eat and drink normally. Super excited not to chug 32oz then try to sit through a pelvic exam without having an accident before my ultrasound this time  :D

OMG at my NT scan I thought I was going to pee my pants- thankfully part way through the scan the ultrasound tech could see I was getting uncomfortable and let me empty my bladder a bit. I ended up peeing 3 times by the time the ultrasound was done!
  • When I made my appointment they told me to drink the 28-32oz of water before coming in, which I dread. My bladder fills up so quickly. But on the paperwork i just got in the mail as a reminder it said there were no special instructions. I'm going to call just to clarify. Even if they tell me to drink all that water I probably won't make it to the full amount.

  • @howdthathappen I asked if I had to drink water before and they told me no- but every place is different, wouldn't hurt to call just to make sure.
  • It's amazing to me how much has changed in just 4 years since having my daughter. Hard to keep up. :)

  • @Spartanrd4, off topic - are you in the metro detroit area?
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • It sounds like every place is different. At mine, I always go in with an empty bladder (they have you drop off a urine sample when you get there). I ate and drank normally before my anatomy scan, but the tech couldn't get every measurement and told me next time to eat and drink more before hand so the babies would be more active.  So I guess every office (or even down to every tech) has different preferences.

I have mine today and haven't had any genetic testing or prior ultrasounds done either, so I'm nervous! I didn't do anything special (apart from 20 oz. of water an hour before the appointment because they requested it), just ate breakfast as usual.

  • Mine is on the 24th! I can't wait to see how our little man is doing and how he is growing
  • With DD I had some orange juice before hand, and she was active, but not so active we couldn't get the measurements and some good pictures. My AS isn't until the 27th, but we did have an u/s at our appointment on Thursday, and without any added sugar he was a little wild man! He wouldn't stay still so we had a hard time getting a good view of the gender. I think at the AS I'll forgo anything to make him to wiggly in there.
  • Our practice appt rem8nders always tell you to drink water before ultrsounds, but a sonographer told me that it doesn't really matter except at the nt scan.

  • My doctor's office didn't give any specific directions about what to eat/drink or avoid eating/drinking before any scan, so I just ate and drank as I normally would (I do drink a lot of water) and my baby was pretty active, but she got to see everything she needed to and did a great job of explaining what she was looking at, what she was measuring, etc. She did ask me to lay on my side at the end so she could try and get the baby to move to see the gender. It worked, and we found out we are having a boy!

  • We're doing our early gender sneak peek scan at my OBs office tomorrow so these are great tips at the perfect time! I'm at 16+4 and dying to know what's in there!! Congrats to everybody!

  • Hi @UnicornsPlease! Everything went well... we are having a boy :)
  • Mine is tomorrow - At first, I thought it would be all excitement, now I am starting the small worry of what ifs and such. It can be a scary time, and you want baby to be all fine. Let's hope for the best tomorrow!
  • Mine is Friday morning. I'm starting to freak out a little. All the testing we did came back fine, but you never know.

    Good luck tomorrow, @MsTurney

  • @MsTurney I think it's perfectly normal to have a mix of different feelings before such a big appointment...I know I was super excited, but also felt a lot of anxiety about if everything was okay, lack of feeling movement, etc. I'll be thinking of you tomorrow and hoping you get some super cute pictures of your sweet baby and a clean bill of health!

  • we didn't do any genetic testing with either pregnancy. we had our anatomy scan on Tuesday and find out we're having another little boy! they had me schedule a followup because he was measuring a bit small and i guess his femur and humerus are measuring short, which could be a marker for downs. so i did the harmony yesterday. Now i have 7-10 days of wondering. I hate wondering...
  • I had my scan on Tuesday, and the tech was BRUTAL with that wand. She pushed so hard right over my c-section scar. It's still painful.
