How do you envision your birth?

Do you envision birthing at a hospital, a birth center or at home?

Are you planning to go med-free or are you thinking 'bring on the epi'?

Do you look forward to your birth experience or do you feel scared?

Do you plan to take a class to prepare or plan to wing it?

Are you considering hiring a doula? Will you document a birth plan?

If you have given birth before did your experience align with what you had envisioned? What, if anything, do you hope to change this time?

A GTKY of sorts!

Re: How do you envision your birth?

  • Do you envision birthing at a hospital, a birth center or at home? I was supposed to have a homebirth this time around, but in my province, I have to deliver in hospital with multiples.

Are you planning to go med-free or are you thinking 'bring on the epi'? Med free

Do you look forward to your birth experience or do you feel scared? I'm looking forward to it! Giving birth was the most empowering and wonderful thing I have ever done.

Do you plan to take a class to prepare or plan to wing it? Wing it again lol

Are you considering hiring a doula? Will you document a birth plan? Yes, same doula as I had for my first birth. We will write a birth plan again this time.

If you have given birth before did your experience align with what you had envisioned? What, if anything, do you hope to change this time? My experience was pretty much what I expected. The nurses and OB were super pushy though and I will definitely be more vocal with them this time around with certain things.

Are you planning to go med-free or are you thinking 'bring on the epi'? I would like to go med free but we shall see

Do you look forward to your birth experience or do you feel scared? A little of both, knowing so early that the chance of having a C-section is greater now (placenta previa) kind of scares me.  I really wanted a natural birth

Do you plan to take a class to prepare or plan to wing it? totally wing it

Are you considering hiring a doula? Will you document a birth plan? no doula, I probably won't document.

If you have given birth before did your experience align with what you had envisioned? What, if anything, do you hope to change this time? FTM here
  • I'm planning another med-free hospital birth.

I am am so excited to give birth again and find it incredibly empowering.

We will probably take a hypnobirthing class or a refresher. We have done the class in preparation for both of my prior births and loved it.

we plan to hire the same doula we hired for my second birth. She was wonderful and the perfect birth partner for DH and me.

i have had two wonderful births so far, with the second being my dream birth. I hope to have a similar experience this time around. Both times the hospital, nurses and dr were totally respectful of our wishes. This time I may birth with the midwives within the practice.

  • @Taylor72, you likely know this already but most previas resolve in plenty of time. I had a partial previa with DD2 and it moved plenty by 32 weeks. I hope the same for you.

  • @MWoodside - I am now googling hypnobirthing classes
  • Do you envision birthing at a hospital, a birth center or at home? I am having this one at a hospital. I love hospitals. Seriously. It is weird how much I love hospitals.

Are you planning to go med-free or are you thinking 'bring on the epi'? I will be doing this one med free. It is my personally preferred way of having babies.

Do you look forward to your birth experience or do you feel scared? Definitely looking forward to it. I am a horribly miserable pregnant lady and when I went into labor with DD it was the happiest day of my life because I was going to not be pregnant at the end of it. If I could just skip pregnancy and go to labor I would definitely do that.

Do you plan to take a class to prepare or plan to wing it? As a doula, part of my job is childbirth education. So, I pretty much know all there is to know about it. I've read just about every book on it and have watched about 800 videos as well. I will be auditing a childbirth class at a hospital this winter so I can have more resources to recommend to clients.

Are you considering hiring a doula? Will you document a birth plan? Well, I am a doula. I will be there. haha. I actually don't think I will have one for myself. DH has been majorly well trained by this point, being married to an externally processing doula. And I am someone that likes to do things myself anyway. So, I am not worries. For a birth plan I will jot a couple of things down. But, I love my midwives. I have worked with them multiple times with clients. So, I pretty much know how they work and don't feel like I need to write anything for them. I will probably just have a short note for the nurses, to hopefully make their lives easier.

If you have given birth before did your experience align with what you had envisioned? What, if anything, do you hope to change this time? The labor and delivery part went great. It as 22 hours, but in the thick of things time doesn't really matter. Shorter would be nicer this time around. I mostly enjoyed the whole process. I didn't get to hold DD after she was born, however. There was meconium in my water and she was born with some minor breathing difficulty. She was whisked away to the NICU. Even if something happens like that again things will go down very differently. I am still angry with the way some things were handled and upset with myself for not having a louder voice.

  • I'll try for a med free birth at a hospital, but I'll probably get the epidural. I had placenta previa with DS so it was a scheduled c section. Easy as pie.

  • @ArchyFlores do you mind if I message you? I just found out today that I have previa and have some questions.
  • Do you envision birthing at a hospital, a birth center or at home?
Part of me thinks that would be completely awesome to have a home birth, but I don't think I could ever do it. I'll be at the hospital.

Are you planning to go med-free or are you thinking 'bring on the epi'?
I got an epidural with DS because I was SO scared. I begged and begged because I made it all the way to 8cm without one. This time, if I can make it that far, I'm gonna try to go without.

Do you look forward to your birth experience or do you feel scared?
I'm so looking forward to it. I love being pregnant, but I can't wait to hold this baby. I'm not as scared this time around.

Do you plan to take a class to prepare or plan to wing it?
We took birthing classes and breastfeeding classes with DS. This time, I'm just going to wing it.

Are you considering hiring a doula? Will you document a birth plan?
Nope. None of the above. I didn't have either with DS. Again, winging it!

If you have given birth before did your experience align with what you had envisioned? What, if anything, do you hope to change this time?
I'm not exactly sure what I envisioned the first time around, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. I really don't think I would change anything (other than possibly going med free). I didn't spend a ton of time at the hospital with DS though. Arrived at 5am and he was born before 7:30am, so maybe I just wasn't there long enough to have a "bad" experience with pushy doctors or nurses.

  • Do you envision birthing at a hospital, a birth center or at home? It'll be a hospital for sure.

Are you planning to go med-free or are you thinking 'bring on the epi'? Still doing my research on this one. As of right now when I have no idea of what pain level to expect, I'll say epidural.

Do you look forward to your birth experience or do you feel scared? Definitely less scared now that I'm reading and learning more, but I still get a little freaked out (FTM here!)

Do you plan to take a class to prepare or plan to wing it? Yeah - we'll take classes, but I haven't decided exactly what.  I'm a music therapist and there are a lot of MT's working in labor and delivery/postpartum, but nothing local so I'm not sure if I'll be able to actually attend a training or just read up on the principles. :)

Are you considering hiring a doula? Will you document a birth plan? Probably no doula as money's a little tight. The hospital we're delivering at has a "birth plan" document on their website that they encourage you to fill out and discuss with OB beforehand, so we'll do that.

If you have given birth before did your experience align with what you had envisioned? What, if anything, do you hope to change this time?  Nothing - FTM!  I'm just trying to stay as flexible as possible and know that any plans I make are highly subject to change in the moment.

  • 1) Hospital with #1, same way this time.

    2) Med free is the plan! Last time I almost wanted an epi but it was way too late and I'm glad honestly it worked out that way!

    3) I think a little of both. Mostly excited but a little nervous too since I know what to expect for the most part being a STM

    4) No classes. We took one the first go around and I felt like it was a waste of time other than getting to tour the birthing wing of the hospital

    5) Nope to the doula, and probably not to the birth plan. I thought about doing one with #1 but didn't get around to it and honestly our doctor and nurses were amazing at just going with the flow and not forcing anything and it all happened so fast that any "ideas" I had were out the window anyway and it all went great.

    6) I didn't really know what to envision the first time really but I'd say I really couldn't ask for a much better experience. I am praying this time I am just as blessed!

    1) At a hospital. Had a great experience last time and look forward to it again

    2) Med free

    3) Both! With DD it was more feat of he unknown, now it's fear of the known lol and also a bit of the unknown since it could be completely different this time
    around

    4) Didn't take a class with DD and don't intend to this time either

    5) No. I've heard they're great but DH was an amazing support last time and I know he will be again this time. I didn't have much of a birth plan last time other than to go med free and use the hypno birthing I practised and I was able to do med free and attempted to use some of the hypno birthing when I could so I will stick with that again this time!

    6) I didn't really know what to expect last time other than basically pain and expect the unexpected. My birth with DD was very similar to my mom's with me (except that I had to be induced) and so I was kind of hoping for it to turn out that way since I'd heard it was possible and it definitely was similar. But in terms of pain I had no clue what to expect and just rolled with it. I don't think I will change anything this time around, I had a great experience starting with the induction, through the birth and up until we went home. Only thing was we had a creep for a pediatrician in the hospital and I hope he's not around when this baby comes, especially since I know DH will be super pissed and anxious if it's the same guy...
  • In a hospital with an epidural, as quickly and safely as possible as long as DH is there! I'd rather go into labor on my own.

DD1 was induced, labor for 15-16 hours, pushed for almost five hours. I was so gassed that the doctor mentioned a section and I found the strength to get her unstuck from my pelvis. I blacked out for her actual exit but there she was! It was as perfect as a terrible labor could be.

DD2 I went into labor two nights before my due date and was in complete denial. My husband forced me to go to the hospital, I was 7cm when I got there. He had to take DD1 back home to meet someone to keep her and he almost missed the birth.  He did make it in time to almost vomit everywhere watching me get my epidural at 9cm! She was out in less than half an hour of pushing, the OB barely made it in to catch her.
  • Do you envision birthing at a hospital, a birth center or at home? Birth Center! It was my healthy medium between the hospital and home birth. The latter is tempting, though, because I have anxiety about finding people to take my kids.

Are you planning to go med-free or are you thinking 'bring on the epi'? Med-free, but not gonna lie--after my last baby I could understand why women get it. I told my husband after several painful contractions that if I got to the birth center and was 1cm, I was heading straight to the hospital for an epidural!

Do you look forward to your birth experience or do you feel scared? Definitely nervous. After a quick and tough labor last round I'm hoping there isn't a repeat.

Do you plan to take a class to prepare or plan to wing it? We did the Bradley Method class with DD1. We'll probably do a review like we did with DD2.

Are you considering hiring a doula? Will you document a birth plan? No, the midwives generally align with my vision.

If you have given birth before did your experience align with what you had envisioned? What, if anything, do you hope to change this time? Yes, I had 2 births that I am very satisfied with my experience! Not sure what I'll do this time besides try to leave earlier and not have the baby in the car!

  • Do you envision birthing at a hospital, a birth center or at home? Home birth for me, please and thank you.

Are you planning to go med-free or are you thinking 'bring on the epi'? Med free, as necessitated by being at home.

Do you look forward to your birth experience or do you feel scared? I can't wait to rock my home birth and push my baby out this time. The only thing that scares me is having another breech position get in my way.

Do you plan to take a class to prepare or plan to wing it? I did a birthing class with DS so I'll wing it this time.

Are you considering hiring a doula? Will you document a birth plan? I'm considering a doula but probably won't end up with one due to lack of funds. I'll have a birth plan to encompass 4 possibilities: home birth (which I don't really need because my midwife doesn't do anything I object to), hospital vaginal birth, c section, and in case of baby in NICU.

If you have given birth before did your experience align with what you had envisioned? What, if anything, do you hope to change this time? It did until the very end. I had a perfect pregnancy, a labor that was progressing well, I was handling it without meds fine, but it was all derailed by my son being unexpectedly breech. My beautiful home birth turned hospital transfer and c section, and it was hell. I hope to push a perfectly positioned healthy baby out in a tub in my living room as planned this time.
  • Do you envision birthing at a hospital, a birth center or at home? Hospital. I had a great hospital experience
DS. The nurses were absolutely amazing
Are you planning to go med-free or are you thinking 'bring on the epi'?Trying for med-free this time around. I gave up around 8cm last time after almost 40 hours of no sleep.
Do you look forward to your birth experience or do you feel scared? Knowing what to expect really helps. Last time it was all so unknown, and I was terrified. This time, I GOT THIS!
Do you plan to take a class to prepare or plan to wing it? Taking a class for DH. We watched lots of videos, and ready many articles together with DS and he was so supportive, but he didn't understand counter pressure or how to support me without me telling him exactly what to do. This time, we are taking a class (I really would like to learn more about the Bradley Method) more for him than me.
Are you considering hiring a doula? Will you document a birth plan? Winged it last time. Think I will write it down this time. I tend to stick to written plans better, so even if I don't give it to the nurses or OB it will be for me.
If you have given birth before did your experience align with what you had envisioned? What, if anything, do you hope to change this time? I really wanted to do med-free last time, but I hadn't slept in over 2 days, and just needed some rest. At 8cm, and almost 24 hours of active labor, I finally asked for an epi. I hear subsequent births tend to be shorter, and I am really hoping that is the case. If I had been able to get actual sleep the  night before, I could have done it.
  • Do you envision birthing at a hospital, a birth center or at home?
    hospital

Do you look forward to your birth experience or do you feel scared?

I look forward to it, because I know I want a c-section.  Last time, my old doctor tried inducing me with drugs and nothing was happening.  I was dilating at 1cm a day, for 3 days!  They just kept pushing drugs up my lady part and it was the most painful thing ever.  When i told her it wasn't working out and i wanted a c-section, she responded with "well I'm not scheduled, but I guess i can do it"  Seriously?  I'm so glad to have switched doctors.

If you have given birth before did your experience align with what you had envisioned? What, if anything, do you hope to change this time?

Not at all!  I pictured a natural birth.  Doctor said baby was measuring small so we had to induce.  That turned out to be a nightmare!  I have since changed doctors and I'm happy to get cut open again.  I don't want to risk a VBAC.  I'm afraid of pushing and having my uterus rupture.
  • @Taylor72 ask away! My previa was found at the NT scan and it settled over my cervix as the pregnancy wore on. Hopefully yours will move up as your pregnancy progresses, it was really miserable the last couple of months.

Are you planning to go med-free or are you thinking 'bring on the epi'? Trying for med free this time

Do you look forward to your birth experience or do you feel scared? I look forward to it.  I suck at pregnancy, but I rock at L&D.

Do you plan to take a class to prepare or plan to wing it? This is #3, so I'm winging it.

Are you considering hiring a doula? Will you document a birth plan? Yes, looking to hire a doula.  Also, the hospital where I'm delivering has a special appt near end of pregnancy to discuss my birth plan.

If you have given birth before did your experience align with what you had envisioned? What, if anything, do you hope to change this time? With my first, I just didn't know what to expect and it was an amazing experience for me.  With my second, I delivered at a naval hospital and it was not what I hoped for.  This time, I am delivering in a brand new maternity ward, which includes a labor tub (no water births, though) that I'm looking forward to using!

No real "birth plan" other than a safe delivery for both of us.

    No classes, no doula.

My delivery experience was less than ideal, IMO, the first time around, so I will be having some long conversations with my docs about this L&D plan. Specifically regarding the midwife interactions and breaking the bed down so I can push against the stirrups. I was not afforded that opportunity last time :/ DS was also wisked off to the nursery for 48 hours after birth last time, I really hope that doesn't happen this time and we have a chance to bond with baby right after birth.

  • Do you envision birthing at a hospital, a birth center or at home?
    At a hospital

Are you planning to go med-free or are you thinking 'bring on the epi"?
I plan on getting an epidural

Do you look forward to your birth experience or do you feel scared?
I wouldn't say I am looking forward to it, but I wouldn't say scared either. It's more like I just see it as a necessary part of having a baby.

Do you plan to take a class to prepare or plan to wing it?
Wing it. I didn't take a class with my first either.

Are you considering hiring a doula? Will you document a birth plan?
    Most likely neither

If you have given birth before did your experience align with what you had envisioned? What, if anything, do you hope to change this time?
I would like to labor at home a little longer this time before going to the hospital. Other than that I would be perfectly happy if it was just like my last. It was pretty quick and easy.

  • Hospital with OB and l&d nurses. Possibly without my husband since this is baby #5 and mostly likely I'll be taking an uber. Relatives are all an hour plus from us.

I have had an epi with all 4 previous pregnancies. Only two worked, but I'll be requesting another. With all of them I've been able to move my legs and walk immediately afterwards and baby and I have had no negative side effects (well, other than them not working 50% of the time) so I'm content with that plan.

ummm, not scared, but dreading the pain and process - although I'm very much looking forward to no longer being pregnant so it's a means to an end.

I took classes with #1 and #3 so I'm good to go.

no doula and none of my hospitals (I've delivered at 3 different ones) would have looked at a birth plan so no to that as well.

I would like the epi quicker. Nothing much else other than never to have the same l&d nurse that I had for #3 ("you've had two babies before - you know it's not that bed!" F*ck you very much, lady)
  • Do you envision birthing at a hospital, a birth center or at home? Hospital, both my parents work at the hospital I've chosen, and I had surgery there last year. Super comfortable with the hospital setting.

Are you planning to go med-free or are you thinking 'bring on the epi'? While med-free would be ideal, I'll most likely get an epi.

Do you look forward to your birth experience or do you feel scared? I'm more scared than excited, but I'm hoping the more I prepare the better I'll feel about it.

Do you plan to take a class to prepare or plan to wing it? I'll probably take a class, winging it is not my thing.

Are you considering hiring a doula? Will you document a birth plan? No doula, my mom will be there to explain anything I don't understand or to make sure I'm being heard. I'll probably create a very loose birth plan.

If you have given birth before did your experience align with what you had envisioned? What, if anything, do you hope to change this time? N/A
  • Do you envision birthing at a hospital, a birth center or at home? hospital

Are you planning to go med-free or are you thinking 'bring on the epi'?
med free would be ideal, but I have a history of passing out when I'm in pain and stressed, so theres a good possibility I'll go with epi.

Do you look forward to your birth experience or do you feel scared?
terrified and excited at the same time.

Do you plan to take a class to prepare or plan to wing it?
I'll take one or two of the classes our hospital offers

Are you considering hiring a doula? Will you document a birth plan?
I'll have my mom who is an OB nurse with me and my husband, so no doula this time.. I will probably write down a few things that would be ideal and some plans for dealing with family/visitors.

  • I've been out of town so I'm sorry to resurrect an older thread but I wanted to join the fun!

@lovelongdog06 do you mind me asking if you baby turned breech during labor?  Or was the breech just a surprise that you didn't find out until mid labor?  Just curious :)

Planning home birth #2 here. Med free, obviously.  Although I will have IV antibiotics for GBS.

I'm not looking forward to it but I'm hoping I will soon.  I felt so empowered walking into my first birth and it was the opposite of what I expected, even though on paper, it sounds like it went well. I was quite haunted for months with images of it all and nightmares. If it wasn't for the amazing prenatal care you get from homebirth midwives, I think I would more strongly consider switching to a hospital to just get the meds and be done with it because I'm so nervous.

I'd like to take hypno birthing or something like that.  We started and dropped out of the Bradley Method before.  Too many rules for us.  I meditate on a very regular basis so I think something more in that style would be better for me.

Will definitely write a birth plan.  We didn't for DD and I regret it so much.  I assumed all homebirth midwives are made of the same stuff.  They aren't.  It just didn't even occur to me that I would need to spell it out to her that I would want to labor where and how I was most comfortable. I'm not chancing anything this time.

Specific things I'd like to change this time are not being forced to eat or drink, a more delayed delivery of the placenta and delivering where I want (I was made to go in the water, which had been the hope but I didn't care when it came down to it.  The temperature was too hot and I hated it so much). I also am very glad to be more prepared for how my body will feel post birth.  I felt fairly good during pregnancy and never did any one warn that I might feel ten times worse after.  It was a tough 2 months.

  • I envision the birth as:

Get the baby out, go home as soon as possible.  I don't really care as long as it's not a c-section (just don't want to longer recovery, I have shit to do lol), and I'm not inclined to prefer a med-free birth (all the drugs, please).  3 times of doing this and I literally have no cares left as long as the baby is healthy and we can go home quickly.  I'll probably end up being induced for the 4th time, so everything pretty much just happens the same each time anyway.

I really don't know why it isn't discussed more.  Not that it would have made all the physical symptoms less uncomfortable but maybe being mentally prepped would have helped. And this time I know to put my foot down to no visitors if I'm not feeling up to it!

  • Something worth mentioning. If you have given birth prior, there will be afterbirth pains this time! Owwww. Crampbark tincture helps a lot. They only last a few days but it happens every time during nursing. No one had ever once mentioned this to me and I was like wtf is happening to me?!

  • @MWoodside I was just thinking about this today for some reason. I am not looking forward to that!
  • I would love to have a very similar experience to last time. Hospital birth, epi, my mom and husband were there the whole time, the nurses were very kind and listened to my needs, my doctor was hilarious. I was getting tired of pushing after little progress for 2 hours so my doctor came in and said basically stop being a pussy and get this baby out right now. Everyone else was being too nice, I really needed that kick in the ass.

The only things I'd like to be different I can't control. 1) I had huge hemorrhoids. So even though my birth plan was no meds I was having labor pains and my plan to walk throughout I couldn't do very much because my hemorrhoids were horrendous. I got an epi more for that than for labor pains to be honest. I know, gross! They also lasted longer and were more painful then my 2nd degree tear and stitches. 2) my labor was 30 hours. I just wasn't progressing. My water broke but not fully just dripping barely out and I didn't want them to manually break it the rest of the way. Also my baby was crooked so her shoulder was rubbing against my spine. All caused long slow labor and delivery. Found out I was tougher than I thought, but less time would be phenomenal. :)

i dont really want to take a class again. My last birth was a year ago so I'm feeling like it's still very fresh. And I'm lazy so there's that. ;)
  • With my son, I was induced, but no epi.  I prefer a natural birth simply because I was very sick and paralyzed from the waste down several years ago so the feeling numb thing is way scarier than the pain.  I am hoping for a natural birth where this little one comes on his/her own time.
  • I'd like for a healthy vaginal delivery at the same hospital, with the same doctor... which is the extent of my plan. My epidural stopped working 3 hours out last time so I'm not sure if I want it only for it to not work again, but I'm not against the pain meds if I need it.

We took a class for the first, but won't for the second since its at the same hospital. No doula cause there is no way DH would go for that cost lol! Regardless, he knows my plan guidelines and I trust him to be my advocate.

With my first, I didn't expect to be 2 weeks late and having to be induced. I'd rather not get induced and have an option to go entirely without an IV. It took a while for the staff to dial in my contractions but I remember them being long and one after another. And... I'll bring my trusty rubber inflatable donut so I can sit less painfully afterwards... ouch!

  • FTM here. I'll be delivering in the hospital. I'll take pain meds if I need it.

No doula. I'll take a class since it's my first time.

My only goals are for me to be well and to have a healthy baby at the end of my delivery.

  • @cafedisco We don't really know when he went breech on us! Every time they palpated him during pregnancy even up to 37 weeks he felt like a perfectly well behaved head down baby. At 37 weeks she felt him and had one little question mark for position, but decided he was just low in my pelvis. He might have flipped during labor or he might have been breech for weeks. I'll have a late ultrasound this time around.
  • Do you envision birthing at a hospital, a birth center or at home? Hospital

Are you planning to go med-free or are you thinking 'bring on the epi'? Csection so yes to meds.

Do you look forward to your birth experience or do you feel scared? sort of nervous but looking forward at the same time..

Do you plan to take a class to prepare or plan to wing it? Wing it.

Are you considering hiring a doula? Will you document a birth plan? No.. I had a horrible labor with my daughter ended in an emergency csection and will be having a scheduled csection this time

If you have given birth before did your experience align with what you had envisioned? What, if anything, do you hope to change this time? Not even close.. went into labor on my own but didn't progress so was given pitocin . but after 48 hours of labor I pushed for over 5 hours and babies heart rate was plummeting with each push so ended with a csection

  • @lovelongdog06 so interesting to me!  Have you ever looked at spinningbabies.com?  I guess I was curious because I never had a cervical check with my midwives with DD until late in labor.  My new midwives mentioned they like to do one late in pregnancy or early labor at least to confirm there is nothing goofy going on with positioning.  I was just surprised this wasn't something that came up with my first midwife...do you have the same midwife this time?
