Kind of Upset with Baby Bargins / Economy

Baby Bargins review of the Bugaboo kind of pissed me off frankly, as they did with Mommys last year with the review as well.  Ya know how they do a rating system of all different products with the raitings A-F?  The Bugaboo, they didn't even rank, but gave a sarcastic comment to the reader!  Yes, they gave sarcasm - not a rating!  They even insulted others who bought the product claiming it was for "yuppies."

If parents, or grandparents want to spend money on babies with a gift such as this, why not?  Its kind of disgusting how they insult people with money.  Yes, I know the baby will use it until he/she is walking, so its not an investment, like a home.

But it sounds like people should feel guilty if they have the money to spend on their children/grandchildren!  Its kind of like insulting someone who has a Louis Vuitton or a Mercedes, I've heard of resentment for others who have luxury items.  I knew it existed, but honestly, this is why the economy sucks now!  I'm not saying if you don't have the money you should go into debt for a product such as this, but if you have the money to give, and your not suffering...why make people feel guilty?

IDK, I don't understand this mindset.

  • I believe their reasoning would be that it is a book about Bargains. The Bugaboo is not a bargain, therefore it doesn't need a rating.

Maybe so, however to play devils advocate here...this was the only product that they insulted the reader for even being interested in.  They didn't insult the reader for discussing any other expensive product and discussed the pro's and cons of other expensive products and gave a rating for without insult!

Honestly, if they did a normal pro vs. con and rating system (as usual) for the Bugaboo, I wouldn't be complaining right now.  However they gave a rating:  "Are you Kidding?!?" and told the reader it is for the "yuppie."  Which pissed me off!

I understand our economy sucks, and its because a lot of people spent money they didn't have, on luxury items - and many are suffering now for it.  However, for the people who spent right and saved money and aren't in a pickle right now, it is not fair for people to judge them for wanting to enjoy some of the fruits of their labor.  Ya know?

  • The latest edition gave it a score and full review--do you have a recent edition??  It basically says that it ranks an A--if someone else is paying for it.  They say the stroller is top of the line, but in a book about baby BARGAINS it isn't considered a bargain.  You can get a stroller with great features not spend $1000 on it, that's all it is saying!

  • Calm down.  I think you are taking this waaaaay too personally.

I'm sure Alan and Denise Fields were not thinking " Hmmm, how can we piss off Princess Lily?"

Take from the book what you want, and leave the rest.

    It's just a book, for pete's sake.

exactly -- they clearly aren't against people spending money on their kids, if they have it, and if the product is worth the extra cost.

What they were saying about the Bugaboo, and what they continue to say in the new edition (albeit with an "A -- if someone else is paying" rating) is that although it's a good quality stroller, the only thing you get for the $300 price difference between bugaboo and similar highly rated competitors is the name.

Honestly, you sound like a yuppie.  It's cool, I'm one too.  But don't get your panties in a wad when an objective quality assessment calls you out on it.

I have the 7th Edition, picked it up yesterday. Is there an 8th?

    To Iblamethebeer's post:

Its not "objectionable" when they call a reader a yuppie for being interested in a product with a rating of "Are You Kidding?!?".  Objectionable is showing both sides of an argument (the pros and cons  and a rating system) and allowing for the consumer to decide what they want. Now, that being said, based on the other poster, I might have an older edition,  and maybe readers complained to them about their sarcasm/insults to the consumer, they finally changed it - which is a good thing!  And my many thanks for advising me of that raiting.

  • No, I have the 7th, that's the latest....check out pgs 477-479--there's a full review you may have missed then....

Basically says if you can afford it, its great, and it does list the pros and cons.  The biggest con for the money is the folding system--for that amount of money on a stroller you still need to take off the seat and whatnot so it's not as easy as other ones on the market (with the exception of the Bugaboo Bee).  Make sure you try it out in before purchasing--make sure you like it!

I had my heart set on this one stroller and when it came down to it, it was such a pain in the ass to fold and unfold (had to take the seat off every time as well) that I couldn't bring myself to get it.  I ended up getting another fantastically reviewed, just as expensive stroller that fit 99% of my wants instead!  Good luck...I know many people love the Bugaboo, we know several people who have it!

  • if you want it why are you going to let a book stop you....

if you want a bugaboo... maybe baby bargains isnt the best book to be looking at about a stroller option... bc you defintely arent in the market for a bargain stroller... just sayin.

I agree that their are plenty of things the book didnt review that I wanted regardless of price... I used it for what i wanted to save on and what I wanted advice on....

  • Yeah, I would be laughing if I saw it in a book called Baby Bargins--talk about an oximoron.  It's rated everywhere, but it's not appropriate in a book talking about bargains...and I don't care about being called a yuppie either.  I am a young urban professional...well I was until I quit to SAH but I still have my profession, so it's all good.  Everyone pretty much agrees that that stroller is best if you live in the city, not really neccessary if you are in the burbs & doing most of your strolling on smooth city streets or malls.

Thanks Ladies for the helpful advice.  I think I just had idea of what Baby Bargins is. I thought of it much like a Kelly Blue Book for baby products, which clearly, they miss the mark with some of the product reviews.  But all in all, its a good book, but I wanted to provide my two-cents on that specific review, if ladies on the nest were looking for a review on that product.

I need to correct myself.  On pg. 482 (7th Edition) their bold final rating is an "Oh, Please!" But, yes, they do list a pro's vs. cons, and they even give a chart with strollers that are bugaboo-ish without the expensive price...which is a good thing!  Its just, I was so looking forward to a "quick review" (ya know, just to get a gist of it) in the car...and was shocked by that bold rating.
