Old Wives Tales for FUN!!

Ladies have any of you done any of the old wives tales such as the baking soda test, the ring test, chinese gender chart etc? I have done them with my last pregnancy and they were accurate lol. I just do them for fun. Now with this pregnancy although I am early, I did the chinese gender chart, it states girl. However when I did the baking soda test it fizzled a little so I'm guessing that still means boy for that test because as it states if it fizzles it means boy and if it does nothing or barely fizzles it is a girl. Hmmmm. Might just have twins who knows. But I pray its a girl !

Ladies feel free to comment if you have done these before or other old wives tales for your LO ;)

  • Oh wow. Thats my first time hearing that one. I'm going to ask mines that as well and see what they say. I have tried the heartbeat count as well too. Basically that states if the heartbeat is under 150 its a boy and if it is above 150 its a girl. I tried that one with my first pregnancy and it was also accurate. @NurseSHS13
  • I've done the Chinese chart and ring test both have said girl. The last time it was accurate too. The ring test last time said boy and then took a long time to swing for a girl, that supposedly meant it would be a long time in between babies. Here I am 5 years later. I guess time will tell

  • I'm honestly always hoping that the ring test isn't accurate, as according to it I'm going to end up having 9 children. If it has any credibility, though, I'm having a boy this time. Different Chinese charts say different things, but the one here on the bumps says girl, and it was right with get last one.

Maybe I'm having multiples. Heaven knows that's the only way anyone's getting 9 children out of me.
  • I have been obsessed with old wive's tales for gender prediction the past week.  I know it's not really accurate, but it's just really fun.  Every single thing I have looked at/done says boy.  I did the wedding ring trick, looked at the Chinese gender charts, looked up my food cravings (spicy), dry hands, clear skin and no nausea (so far... I know it's still really early), and I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can think of right off the top of my head.

Also, I have started reading "Do Chocolate Lovers have Sweeter Babies" by Jena Pincott.  There's a chapter on different scientific theories on how gender is determined. One of the theories is based on the mother's personality characteristics at the time of conception.  (It states that personality characteristics can be influenced by outside sources during different times i.e. if you lose your job you may be feeling more vulnerable and less aggressive than when you were running a company.)  There's an online test you can take at https://sexratio.com/test.php.  Again, it's just for fun.  My results were 90% Boy and 10% Girl.

  • Last time all the old wives tales said girl. He's a boy. I was bored and just did a quiz and it told me my baby is a mystery. Wives tales hate me apparently.
  • @NurseSHS13 The ultrasound theory was correct for both our miscarriage and with DD.  So I'll probably do it again this time just because but won't be buying pink or blue because of it.

  • I love owt! I had 3 team green babies so I was all over them lol. Ones that were accurate for me: no morning sickness, ring/pencil on a string. I carried 'boy', particularly the last one. Strangers invariably laid eyes on me and assumed boy.

Heart rt was a mixed bag, shettles a mixed bag, Chinese gender a mixed bag

  • Awww it's great to hear how they have been accurate for some of you. I am definitely trying to ultrasound one this time around and I will do the ring test as well. I have already done the chinese gender chart which says girl. So we shall see.
  • The Chinese gender predictor thing and the Ramzi theory both say I'm having a girl. But the coin flip method said I'm having a boy. The "is your morning sickness severe" thing assumes boy I guess because I haven't been that sick yet. I'm assuming I'll have one of the other so it seems like something will be right.

The old wives tales are kinda nonsense. They have a 50% chance of being right.

  • @NamelessAria thats true they do have a 50% chance at being correct. So we all shall see
  • The Chinese gender predictor is torn to shreds by women like me undergoing IVF.  The conception date for all my embryos is the same, yet somehow I have a boy AND a girl thus far from that one round.  Hmmm....
  • The only OWT that was correct about my son happened to be the way I carried him.  He was so low my entire pregnancy, and just grew outward on my body.  We will see what happens this time around, just go with my gut feeling and find out at the anatomy scan.
  • Most of the OWT were wrong for DD.  But DH and I just felt like it was a girl from the very beginning, so that was accurate I guess.

This time I kind of think it's a girl, but not as strongly as last time.  I'm a lot less curious about it this time, my dr does the AS at 18 weeks so I'm just hoping I make it that far and that everything looks good, and learning the sex is a nice perk.

DH wanted to be team green last time and i said no, but that i'd consider it next time.  Totally finding out though.  I'm the one that has to give up booze for 9 months, I make the decisions about the baby when it is inside of me.  Right now my only concerns, in order, are: healthy baby, and that there is only one of them in there (I have hyperovulated before, so the risk is present, and DD was an absolutely terrible newborn so the idea of doubling her is like a living nightmare to us...though I'm sure we'd figure it out and be fine if that was to happen).
  • THere's the ring test that is done with a strand of your hair over your hand that tells you how many kids and in what gender order and it has been right so far for me!  boy boy girl girl stop - every time.  I have two boys...that makes this one a girl.  We will see!

  • @delujm0 oh wow. Well I had that same experience with my son. Just knew it was a boy and that it was. With this one we just have that feeling its a girl and I truly believe it will be so we shall see. I am definitely hoping for a girl.
  • @Turbotastic I think I will definitely try that. So you get a strand of hair put the ring on it and put it over your hand right?
  • Not really an owt but  the ramzi method/theory (hope its the right  spelling) was true for me and 5 others that was pregnant  at the same time.
  • When I was pregnant with my dd more than half of the owts said girl, I also had a strong feeling it was a girl. I had horrible horrible morning sickness, carried all around, all girl symptoms. This time around so far the Chinese calander and the ring over the belly have said boy, hubby says girl I say boy.(it may change) with the ring thing going around over the hand lately it has said girl, boy, girl, girlish stop. So we shall see. As I get closer on I'm going to do some other owt

  • That's the one I normally go by @foxface . @Mrs.DeRuysscher thats the test I plan on doing with this one to see what it says. We have a strong feeling its a girl.
  • I have not done any with this pregnancy, all of my previous pregnancies the Chinese chart was wrong for all of them. The ring test was right, same with a king soda. And the ultrasound one we only tried with the last, but it was true also.
  • I remember going through some of the OWT on my last pregnancy & they all (except one, the morning sickness) pointed to having a male.  But i had a baby girl
Just for fun, i just did the Chinese chart & it's saying i'm having a girl.  *shrug

  • Chinese gender chart was right for my first two kiddos and this time it says girl.  My mom always makes me do the draino test and it's always right for me as well.  The ring and hair test was correct too so I guess I'm pretty right one with the OWTs lol.
  • Awww okay ladies. Well its always for fun but its always great when it turns out that something or a couple of them were right. Seems to me the ones that are right the most is the ring test and the placenta one.

Chinese gender chart said that both of my boys would be girls, but it is saying this one will be a boy, so maybe we'll finally get a girl!
  • Anyone else notice that the Chinese gender charts aren't the same?

One said boy and a different one said girl... haha, who knows...
  • Chinese gender chart, craving spicy stuff, and carrying low indicated a boy my last pregnancy, and it was correct! I also low-key believe in the ol' gut feeling, which told me I was having a boy long before we found out!

  • With my son I tried the wedding ring, Chinese gender predictor and ramzi.  They were all consistent in saying girl.  I still think they are fun and will probably do them all again but they clearly don't work for me.
  • Different Chinese gender predictors have said different things. I might ask about the Ramzi. Even if it is not accurate, it is still fun to try!

  • Chinese gender chart, food cravings, and necklace test all point to boy for me  :) I had dreams for three nights in a row before I got my bfp that I was pregnant with a boy and I continue to have random dreams about having a boy, except the other night it was twins!
  • With DD we were team green.  My gut instinct was girl.  All the old wives tales were 50/50 every single time.
The only one I put a little bit of stake in is the early ultrasound position.  1st time showed boy, it was but we lost that one.  With DD it showed girl.  This ultrasound is showing girl.
We're team green again anyways, but it's always fun to hear different theories.
