I think we have decided on Adalene Elizabeth P------ (two syllable Polish last name). Sibs are Hunter Jason and Briley Lou. We use family names for middles; my side if it's a girl and H's side if it's a boy.

I know two Naomis, they both pronounce it nay-oh-mee. I know some people pronounce it n-eye-oh-mee, but I don't think it's really a common pronunciation. I guess it comes down to whether you want people to misspell or mispronounce your name. If you spell it Naomi, most people will likely assume it's pronounced nay-oh-mee. If you spell it Nyomi, people will probably pronounce it correctly, but they will misspell it. (ETA: quoting b/c I agree with this sentiment)

Either way, I think it's a lovely name.

I 99% of the time go with traditional spellings. But, all I can think of is American Pie when the chick is named Naomi and they say, "It's I moan backwards." Sooo maybe the unusual spelling would be better!!

How on Earth I remember that is beyond me.

Interesting. Because considering it's "nay" without the "i", to me the "i" makes it read as n-eye. But I guess that goes to show that pretty much any spelling could be potentially confusing.

I know it can go both ways with the Nai like rain or Nairobi. So that's why I'm thinking of Nyomi.

And no my name is not Ny/Naiomi but it's always pronounced wrong.

I did have a friend Erica who named her daughter Arykah, so I guess it happens.

Phonetically speaking, when I teach vowel teams in my classroom ai and ay say the long a sound as in rain, day, bay, claim.

Y is taught to read as either long i or long e. As in by, my or carry, hairy, etc. Unless it just plain says y as in yum.

So, to me, the y in Nyomi will be actually spelled phonetically correct and probably pronounced correctly (the way OP wants it to be) more often by people who read phonetically.

Of course I also have to teach kids that some names don't play by the phonics rules though because people spell them too funky. This is not one of those though.

H and I officially decided our daughter will be Ella Michelle!

*Possible TW?* Her middle name is in honor of her aunt (my SIL) that passed away in a car accident. Yesterday was the 3 year anniversary of her death and it was very therapeutic for H to "Facebook announce" her name to our friends and family that did not already know her name.

Back on the name train. We have three frontrunners so no decision has been made. We have middle names for two of them but it's a family name and will not go with the third name. So I need help! Good middle name for Theodore? It's gotta be short because our last name is long as well.

Anyone else waiting until birth to decide for sure? I think we might be doing that this time even though I don't necessarily want to. We like all three equally.

We're also waiting until the birth to decide for sure, but Theodore is our front-runner! I personally like Theodore James, but we've already pretty much decided the MN will be Harold, regardless of the first name, in honor of H's great-grandfather (who was more like his grandpa).

I think we will go in with 3 names, tops, and decide when he is born. But I already think of him as a Theodore, so we'll see if meeting him changes anything

ETA: @homemake unless the James in your family is an asshole or someone you really don't want your child's name associated with, I'd say don't take James off the table. It's a very common name, and a very common middle name - it wouldn't be like you were giving your child a super-rare MN that belonged to someone in your family... Like Monserrat or something.

We're currently leaning toward Catherine Rose (nn Kate) but will not be naming her till the hospital.

Question is: DH keeps bringing up that if we name her Catherine with a "C" her nn would have to be "Cate" not "Kate" ... I personally feel like Kate is acceptable even if it's not Katherine with a K. My example is Kate Middleton is a Catherine with a C. Any thoughts?

My best friend's name is Katherine and she goes by Cate. I don't think it matters.

We decided on a name! We chose Elizabeth (nn Betty). I'm so excited bc I love how versatile Elizabeth is and I love the name Betty for a baby and it was my grandmother's name so I'm proud to honor her in that way. Her middle name will be my birth/maiden name and our last name starts with a B so we've been having fun saying things like "bouncing baby Betty B with her bows and bobbins!"

I love Elizabeth @Gretchypoo I think it's beautiful and classic. It's my dds middle name!

Now now that we know we're having another girl we've come back around to girl names.
Hannah Jane is still our front runner but we are still considering the name Alexis as well but honestly just don't love it nearly as much as I love and am obsessed with Hannah. I think I've pulled dh around to my side as well. But we will probably give it some time to sit and think about it.
