Hurricane Matthew

Is everyone in the storm's path taking the necessary precautions?

We're staying put and were able get some dry food, batteries and fill our cars up with gas. Almost everything is closed today.

  • I'm pretty far West so I'm good this time around. I actually have my sister and mom here who live in South Florida. My mom lives on the beach so it's best she's here. We're keeping watch on it pretty heavily because the rest of our family is still down there.
  • I hope everyone in the path is safe!

  • Thinking of all of you guys! Please be safe!
  • Stay safe, everyone! Keep us updated if you can.
  • It looks like we will get some strong wind gusts but  not horrible rain. We have a close friend that lives in Cocoa and he said all he did to prepare was board up his windows. I am hoping that this hurricane weakens and shifts paths away from Florida.
  • They have started evacuations here as of this morning, but haven't called out our zone yet.... seriously doubt we will need to go.

The dumb thing is DH'S cousin is still getting married an hour away tonight at 6. Seriously, there is a hurricane. We are all supposed to drive an hour one way, sit for an hour, and drive an hour back? Not sure if DH will even be off in time to fight the traffic to get there.

    @skiingstark Eep! End of days!
Seriously though, best thoughts for all you ladies in the hot (wet?) zone. May your water, freak-out food and stockpiles of ice cream* be plentiful.

*if the power goes out that shizz is just gonna melt, so now's your excuse to eat all of it... and your neighbors'... and any they have in the store...

  • I've got close family in both Miami and Orlando. They both are evacuating. I'm surprised even Orlando is evacuating. They are usually fine. Stay safe, peeps! Don't do anything stupid!

  • Stay safe everyone! We're technically considered in the "wet zone" but I'm not worried. We're high enough above sea level we'll probably only have a lot of rain and clouds over the next several days.

  • I need to complain for a minute. Fair warning.

DH is still stuck working, because one stupid grocery store warehouse needs someone to help with not their backup generators, but their backup, backup generators. They decided to start this testing at 2:30 today. They didn't tell DH about this additional test they needed (which is extremely complex, requires multiple techs, etc) until 6 PM. So I guess he is just stuck there (and had to call in another guy too) until the weather gets too dicey, and they have to stop in the middle.

To top it off, the utility company decided it's a great idea to preemptively cut off the water at 8 PM tonight. So DH is going to get home at some point, and not even be able to shower, unless we drive across town to his parent's house who have a well.

It is barely even raining, and the wind isn't even above 35 yet... but we'll have no water, just because? Really? I'm sure it's to preserve the lines in case of bad issues or whatever, but it is still dumb.

  • Stay safe everyone!
  • Ouch @WinchesterGirl! I'm sorry to hear this.  I get how you feel.  That's very upsetting.  I hippie you're husband makes it home safely.  Are you going to end up going to his parents home?

  • Thinking of you ladies. Stay safe!
  • Thinking of everyone! The radar looks intense and I just hope everyone stays safe!
  • So, our power is still on but we have several large trees down and two different lines down on our street.

  • @WinchesterGirl i hope your husband (& you & everyone else) are ok! That must be so scary & stressful! Stay safe!
  • @WinchesterGirl that is so crazy! Both about your husband having to go right into the storm and the trees falling around your house! I'm assuming you are safely out of your house and at the relatives, right? I sincerely hope and pay that your husband is safe.  I get that people need power, but was it totally necessary to send him right away? I feel like they could have waited until the weather called down. Please keep us updated!

  • I don't think you're being a big baby.
  • Thanks ladies, DH got there in one piece after about an hour of storm driving and is still there working safely as far as I know.

So far the tally is a tree on one brother's house/messing up roof, but nobody hurt thankfully. BIL's house has a tree down which tore up the sidewalk and is blocking a road in front of his house, and a second one touching his roof with a power pole in it at the back (not sure if any damage - they were in the house when that one came down and just left). As of the moment, we are not sure if we can get back to our house or if anything else fell - they are estimating Tuesday afternoon the earliest we'll have power back.

  • Oh my @WinchesterGirl that's sounds like a stressful, and frustrating situation. You don't sound like a baby at all. My dad is a tree guy, I've seen lots of trees that crashed through people's houses. That's scary!! Hopefully they can get the power back up and running quicker than they are anticipating. I hope your husband is safe and can get back to you soon.

  • @WinchesterGirl you are not being a baby at all! The whole situation is stressful and scary since the storm has been so unpredictable. I'm glad you are safe where you are now and I hope your husband finishes his work soon and his drive back is safe!
  • @WinchesterGirl your fear is totally valid! I'm sorry you have to deal with the worry of your husband being gone. I hope he comes back safe!

We we don't have any trees down but apparently no one here can drive in heavy rain. There has already been one vehicular death, an interstate accident that caused the power to go out in the town H works in, and I drove past two other accident scenes all since yesterday. Granted, it wasn't supposed to start raining/flooding until today and it started yesterday, but if you can't drive in rain then stay home!

  • Those giant trees falling is just nuts! I'm so glad you and your husband are safe! Sorry about your brother's house.  That truly is so difficult to deal with.  Btw, I was wondering, what is your home owner's insurance like? Is it more expensive because of the hurricanes? Or not that much different? And how do they pay out the claims? Are they pretty fair?

  • There is a separate hurricane damage deductible which you pay in addition to your regular deductible. It usually runs about 2% of home value.... so if something small is damaged, it's usually not worth the insurance deductible. But if it takes out your whole roof or whole house, obviously you can use it then.
