Infertility

embryos not surviving thaw

I did an IVF cycle in August and ended up with 12 retrieved, 9 fertilized, and 4 made it to day 5. We did a fresh cycle and transferred 1 but ended up with a BFN. The RE suggested we send the remaining 3 out for PGS testing and we agreed. Yesterday the embryologist called and said that 2 of my 3 didn't survive the thaw process. Has this happened to anyone in previous IVF cycles? If so, did your RE say it was because of poor quality?

Re: embryos not surviving thaw

  • Huh that's odd.  Sorry I don't have experience with that happening, but I wuold recommend you inquire as to the thaw procedure they use and survival rates they see?  My clinic has a 90%+ survival rate.  I'm a bit surprised since these were day 5 embryos for you.  I would ask them for more info.

  • Wow, I'm so sorry this happened  You must feel so crushed and confused. I asked my clinic about survival rates from thawing and they told me that they NEVER see day 5 embryos not survive the thaw. I would absolutely ask your clinic what happened and what their survival rates are, because that just sounds unacceptable to me! Sorry hun.

I would be very upset and definitely want answers. Are you planning to transfer the 1 now or still do pgs? I really hope this last embaby is the one! Thinking of you!

  • @teamginger13 Oh no... how devastating. I'm so so sorry that happened. Is the other one off for PGS testing? Did it get thawed to get tested and then re-frozen? I'm a bit confused. I'm really hoping that one that did survive gets put back and turns into a happy healthy little baby. <3 hugs

@wifeinraleigh28 @Elyse1384 - This is making me realize I actually have no clue what my clinic's thaw survival rates are... eek. Probably should have asked that before we froze the other 7 embryos.

  • @teamginger13  I am sorry that this happened to you! We did PGS testing and have two frozen right now and are planning on transferring one at the beginning of November. I was nervous about the throwing process since we only have two, but my doctor said that has not been an issue that they do not make it through the thawing process. I too would definitely question why this happened! Good luck to you!!
  • @teamginger13 I am so sorry to hear that you are experiencing this right now. Going into my second transfer we have 6 in the freezer but after waiting over an hour and a half on the "embryos to develop" they thawed the last 2 and said they would let me know if the others made it. It turned out that they didn't so now we are waiting to get started with our 2nd round of IVF. We are going to change protocol to see if we can get some better quality embryos since my Dr thinks that could have been a factor but he was not able to give me anything definite to go off. Hugs to your girlie, I hope you can get some answers.

  • @teamginger13 good luck with everything. Waiting to get our test results was a tough wait (2 out 3 came back normal for us).  I would Definitely be asking your RE about things, that just isn't fair...not like much is with IF.
  • @teamginger13 I don't have any experience with anything IVF related, but I wanted to say how sorry I am. I know that must have hit you like a ton of bricks. I really hope when you meet with the RE you can get some answers.

I was worried about this with my frosties.  I asked my nurse if she had ever seen an embie not survive the thaw and she said not in the 5 years she's worked there.  I would definitely inquire about their thawing process or other factors that may cause that etc.  I am so sorry you have to deal this!
    Me: 35  DH: 36
Me: 1, possibly 2, blocked tubes

  • @teamginger13 - just wanted to say I'm really sorry.
In our 2nd cycle, we had just 2 embroys to freeze. On the day of the transfer one did not make it. I know it really crushes you. I hope your 1 embie comes back normal and you get your take home baby from it.
