Re: GD Club Check-In 10.4.16
How are your numbers this week? Pretty good, a few spikes- like 5 over a 2 week period. The biggest one was on Saturday when my football team pulled out win straight from a movie ending. My dietician says that emotional stress of any kind can increase your blood sugars numbers and I believe it!
Any new good snack recommendations or do you typically eat the same things for snacks? If so, tell us about them. I eat a lot of Greek Yogurt and Strawberries- usually the same things every day. I find something that works for me and I'll eat it until I get sick of it. It usually doesn't affect my sugars much and it helps with my sweet tooth, so that's good, but honestly I'm kind of ready to branch out to other snacks.
I've also been eating a lot of sugar free jello which has also helped curb my sweet tooth. It's actually pretty good, I think.
Favorite GD friendly meal? I made a chorizo and tortellini soup last night which was FANTASTIC. I didn't eat the tortellinis but ate everything else in the soup and it was so good. It's essentially a vegetable soup with pasta and sausage with some spiced thrown in and so GD friendly! I think it only had 14 carbs per serving which was like 1.5 cups worth!!!
What's your favorite thing about Fall? I love football season, crisp air and the leaves changing. I love wearing Fall clothes and a light jacket and my boots. But most of all this year- I love that it's Fall which means that baby is that much closer to coming!!!!
How are your numbers this week? My numbers have been good, I'm at 2.5 weeks with no high numbers after a rocky start so I'm excited about that.
Any new good snack recommendations or do you typically eat the same things for snacks? If so, tell us about them. I feel like I eat the same thing for snacks, trail mix, fruit, cottage cheese, applesauce. I have found most of the blue bunny small individual size containers run about 30 carbs so every once in a while I will have one of those as a snack.
Favorite GD friendly meal? I really am not sure I have one yet. I've been eating a lot of the same old things for lunch and dinners. I really need to do some searching and find some good things.
What's your favorite thing about Fall? The cooler temps, the clothes, and the food (however now I have to figure out what's what with the food).
Is anyone else here dreading Halloween and the holidays? I like my sweets so I haven't given in on any of the deals that I've found on Halloween candy because I can't have it in my house until I absolutely have to. I also am not looking forward to trying to figure out what I can and can't have at Thanksgiving. My mom's mashed potatoes are my favorite.
@LandJ13- welcome! I'm sorry you have to join our little club here, but we are a wealth of information now that some of us have been dealing with it for a few weeks, so if you have a question, ask away!
there are ways to incorporate protein without eating meat- it's harder, much harder- but totally doable. Do you like peanut butter if so, might want to invest in some of that! Any kind of nuts are considered protein as well as Greek Yogurt.
Again, we are all here so if you have questions- ask away!!!
Im pretty zen about it, I figure this will just make us all the more healthy after baby comes.
Anyone know anything about if we should expect early babies? I won't see the OB until next week and they didn't give me any info at all on the call, just scheduled the class for next Wednesday at the high risk OB.
How are your numbers this week? Mostly good, but my fasting levels were elevated both yesterday and today. I'm not really doing anything any differently, so I'm hoping that I'm not trying to get sick or something like that!
Any new good snack recommendations or do you typically eat the same things for snacks? If so, tell us about them. I mostly have the same snacks. Trail mix, Nature Valley nut bars, string cheese, hummus and crackers. I have had some of my mom's homemade pumpkin roll without any issues though!
Favorite GD friendly meal? Roasted veggies with chicken sausage. I'm a big fan of anything I can just throw together. Some days after work I really don't feel like cooking!
What's your favorite thing about Fall? Seeing the leaves change (although they aren't changing too much this year because the summer was so hot and dry), bonfires, and seasonal desserts (like the pumpkin roll I mentioned previously!)
How are your numbers this week?
Pretty darn good. My dr said to only test my fasting levels and then one random time each day because I've only had 3 spikes in the past 3 weeks and those were all times I wasn't eating at home.
Any new good snack recommendations or do you typically eat the same things for snacks? If so, tell us about them.
Cottage cheese and grapes are my go to snack currently. I also eat jerky and spicy trail mix at work for protein.
Favorite GD friendly meal?
Olive Garden salad
What's your favorite thing about Fall?
Apple cider that I can't have. Boots that I can't zip up and skinny jeans that I can't wear hahah! Oh and s'mores .

@babyk- I'm so sorry you are joining our little club here- but welcome! Like @carly79 says- we are a wealth of info around here so if you have questions- ask away!
@cayaylonglegs- I love Olive Garden salad! So.Very.Much. but I'm afraid to go there because then I'm going to want to devour a whole plate of pasta!
@landj13- I know they are inducing me at 38 weeks but it's for a separate reason than GD but with me measuring 2 weeks ahead already- I'm sure they would have induced earlier than my due date. I'm hoping I go on my own- I had DD at 38 weeks and DS at 37+1.
i have a growth scan at 32 weeks already scheduled before this diagnosis. I think it was age related but now will fit this also.
@babyk Sorry you had to join but welcome!
How are your numbers this week? I took my class yesterday so I have only been testing for 24 hours. So far only my fasting level has been high... but we have a long way to go.
Any new good snack recommendations or do you typically eat the same things for snacks? If so, tell us about them. I'm still definitely learning, string cheese and a fruit is probably the easiest thing right now though.
Favorite GD friendly meal? Last night I had whole wheat spaghetti with sauce and turkey meatballs and it was delicious. I really need to get some more veggies in my house though!
What's your favorite thing about Fall? Cider and donuts (tear) football, sweatshirts, and the hot goes away and most of the bugs die
Plus fall pictures are my favorite with the leaves. Hoping to get my maternity pics at just the right time!
@babyk I joined last week after my one hour test too
@landj13 welcome both of you, everyone here has been super nice to me, I was not handling it as Zen as you
@carly79 I am definitely worried/bummed about the holidays. I know I can have small amounts of things but I did tell my husband that thanksgiving and pregnant should be the ultimate excuse to eat anything and everything you want... and I can't.
My insurance requires that I order my diabetes testing supplies via mail order to be covered, so I'm trying to get that done by Monday. Which monitors are you ladies using? (I apologize if this was in an earlier thread). My friend recommended the One Touch Delica but its the only one her insurance covered.
@bookworm8622 I use the One Touch Ultra 2 and it's been great so far. I've been testing for a few weeks now and have had no problems. I don't think you could go wrong with either one of them!
Welcome to the little club we've got going on here. You will find that everyone is so nice and super helpful (looking at you @carly79
) so if you've got questions- ask away!
@bookworm8622 I use the One Touch Delica because that's all my insurance covered. It works great and apparently has a blue tooth function that I can download an app on my phone and it will track my numbers there. I haven't downloaded it yet so I can't comment on how well that works. I still track my numbers in my log book and track my food so it's just easier for me. Plus if I have to send something in to the doctor to look at my numbers it's easier.
@phoebecar Thank you so much! While I'm not happy that everyone here is in this club I'm so thankful to have a group of people in the same boat.
@BenNSarah My fasting numbers were high for about a week after I started testing (I also failed the fasting blood draw on my 3 hour test). I was having a greek yogurt as a part of my snack at bedtime and stopped that and my numbers have been great. I've thought about trying yogurt again to see if my body just needed time to adjust or if it truly was the greek yogurt. I'm so excited to have good numbers I hate to try something and have it mess that up
How are your numbers this week?
Good! I'm finally relaxing and getting the hang of things after the first couple weeks being rough. Had my 1st visit w my doc Monday since the GD diagnosis & he was happy w everything. I was bummed to find out they won't do a growth scan til 38 weeks though, even though baby is measuring about six days ahead.
Any new good snack recommendations or do you typically eat the same things for snacks? If so, tell us about them.
I've been a big fan of the Luigis Italian ice cups for a bedtime snack, I think I love the fact that it tastes juicy since I'm really missing juice! And it doesn't seem to effect my numbers
Favorite GD friendly meal?
I've been on a soup kick since discovering that most of them are so low carb and you can have a good size serving. Had pasta fagiole over the weekend and tonight I'm planning to make some broccoli cheddar soup! Yum!
What's your favorite thing about Fall?
All of it!! Saturday's watching college football, windows open with fresh air and a pumpkin candle burning, all things pumpkin and apple and delicious! (Really gonna miss that cider this year!)
I'm joining the GD club - just got the call that two of my levels were elevated (hours 1 & 2). I'm pretty bummed about this. Not because of the inconvenience (which does suck, not gonna lie), but because I'm worried/PO'd that my body is unintentionally hurting my baby girl. Diet change isn't going to be a big deal - I'm vegetarian and eat lots of veggies and fruits, beans, whole grains, don't touch sodas and rarely have fried foods, but I have had a sweet tooth during pregnancy, especially in 1st - early 2nd tri. I started out the pregnancy with a subchorionic hematoma and immediately ceased all exercise. Fortunately the SCH went away, but unfortunately I didn't pick back up with exercise. 2nd tri it was painful for me to walk much, but now that I have a maternity support band it has greatly improved. So I guess I'll start there, with walking after meals. I've been following your posts since I failed the 1 hour test, and you've had tons of great info, so I feel slightly prepared to get through this, even though I haven't had the nutritional class yet. I especially appreciate whoever said that it is still OK to have a piece of cake at your shower, just not a large one
@KattyC- welcome to the club! I'm so sorry you've found yourself here but feel free to ask anything you can think of!
I got my results early and because I failed it so badly I started this diet around week 25ish and I'm almost to week 30- so almost 5 weeks and honestly, it hasn't been that bad.
My dietician said have that cake at your shower, just don't eat half the cake.
I've had cheesecake and I believe someone had some chocolate cake for a birthday. So you can have your cake and eat it too
just not a whole lot.
From my understanding the placenta makes some hormone that counteracts with the insulin your body makes and that's why some people develop GD. As long as you are keeping your numbers in check your LO should be just fine! The GD doesn't necessarily harm the baby just makes LO bigger than a baby coming from a mom with no GD.
It sounds like you've had a bit of a rough road getting here and your diet sounds right on track. But just know that we are a supportive bunch and are happy to answer any questions you have!
Even though I'd already accepted the possibility before the call, it definitely still made me tear up a little bit
@ashleygorokhovsky I cried hysterically when I failed the one hour but didn't have a reaction when they said I failed the 3 hour. So weird. Enjoy the wedding this weekend!
@ashleygorokhovsky welcome to the club- and I'm sorry you have to be here. Your reaction to the news is completely normal and likely what everyone else did as well! It can be a hard diagnosis to hear especially if you are used to eating what you want, when you want, where you want, like I was.
Just know you can still have some of that stuff that you were eating and the GD diet isn't all that bad. yes, you have to curb some things, and yes you have to eat some others in moderation, but you can still have them! As I've said before I've had cheesecake twice now, my dietician said to eat the cake at showers, just don't have half the cake!
You can enjoy food, I still do!! Don't let it put a damper on your weekend, go, have a great time at the wedding, have a piece of wedding cake- just get up and boogie down about 30 minutes after you eat it.
Any exercise 30-90 minutes after eating (if you test 2 hours after you eat) will help lower your sugars. So if you are a runner, walker, body pumper, zumba person- try some of that after eating and it will help.
One of the best things about the GD diet is that I'm constantly eating. I test 2 hours after I eat- so I have breakfast around 8:30 then test at 10:30, have a light snack afterward, eat lunch around 12:30, test 2 hours later, have another light snack around 3-4, eat dinner around 7, test again and the another snack at bedtime. They are all just smaller portions and are infinitely more healthy than the crap I was eating.
I've chosen to try and think of it this way- this will help curb some of the weight I would have put on had I not been diagnosed, which means less weight to pull off after the baby is born. Which, in my case, is a good thing since I started heavier than I ever have been!!!
Good luck and if you have any questions, please ask!!!
@ashleygorokhovsky Welcome, sorry you are joining us but this is a great group. My lab actually told me the numbers from the previous draw at each draw so I actually knew I had failed my 3 hour test upon leaving. I thought I was good but ended up crying when they told me and then proceeded to cry most of the afternoon. I called in to work and told them I wouldn't be back in that day. We didn't have a wedding to go to but we actually left that night for my inlaws. I wasn't ready to talk about it with people yet because I didn't know enough to have answers at that point and am not one that likes people all up in my business so we didn't tell anyone and just enjoyed the weekend. After spending some time with family I was doing much better and once I got my class out of the way and had more answers things were even better.
I have actually lost weight due to eating better. I don't feel like I'm hungry very often and feel like I'm eating a lot, it's just better choices (other than a snack or two here and there that include a recess pumpkin or icecream). I feel a lot better since starting to eat better too. Weight loss is definitely not the goal but based on my BMI prior to pregnancy doctors are ok with it so far. We are watching it and I'm making sure to add some more cheese and healthy fats in more often to help with that.

#2 due Christmas 2016.
@1982babies Please don't beat yourself up. I didn't have GD with my first but have it this time around. It's nothing you did. It's just how your body processes the extra insulin that's needed due to being pregnant.
I spent the entire afternoon after finding out about it bawling, I was a mess. Once I got through the nutrition classes and had my meter and supplies it made a huge difference. Also, coming to terms with the fact that it was nothing I did helped. The other thing that has helped, how much better I've been feeling since starting to eat better. And knowing that I can still have my sweets, just in moderation and better controlled portions.
You've got this and there are a lot of fabulous ladies here that have your back to help answer any questions or just to vent to when you're having a rough day. About 2 weeks after my diagnosis I had a crappy day. I was tired of counting every carb that went in to my mouth, planning my meals, and checking my blood sugar 4X a day (and worrying about making sure I didn't miss the time I was supposed to do it). I tried to put it in to perspective and reminded myself that it's temporary and what I'm doing will help allow me to have the delivery I want so it's worth it for this little girl.
I hope your education nurse if helpful (the one's I met here were wonderful) and once you have some more information things get better. Try to enjoy your weekend, do something to keep your mind off of it and start fresh once you have all your instructions

No one has recommended that I test for it, but its so cheap to just buy some strips on Amazon...
@bookworm8622 I do test every morning for ketones, only because the dietician and GD educator suggested I should. My OB said nothing about it. I have had trace or small amounts before- and it is usually gone by the next day with a ton of water and increasing the fat/carbs in my diet.
I had a moderate amount on Sunday morning which scared the wits out of me- I recalled what I ate on Saturday which wasn't a lot- and was way under what I should have been eating. So that was the cause. Monday and today was fine and negative.
But if you have them, my dietician said they can be flushed out with a lot of water and an adjustment to diet.
@phoebecar which brand of strips do you use?
