Different doctor-- so annoyed!!! Rant :-/

we took Cole for his 4 month shots (he's 3.5 months but bc they gave him the first set early, this is when we had to go).  Anyway!  Long story short we saw a different dr at the practice bc our regular ped. is on maternity leave. This lady has never seen my son.  She started off the appointment telling me I should consider supplementing with formula bc he's only 14lbs. Cole is EBF and has roughly 35oz a day... I don't see a problem here!!! Instead of encouraging my desire to EBF she was laser focused on formula.  Wtf!?  She kept saying "well at 4 months he should weigh x". Well lady... he's 3.5 months!!!!

Then!! She tells me she wants his legs evaluated bc he shouldn't be straightening them so much..  basically she couldn't believe he was trying to stand up, he may need physical therapy... FOR WHAT!?  The kid has been doing it for weeks and every dr has always commented on how strong he is.

I am am so annoyed!  She's fresh out of college and clearly going by the books not real life experience.

  • @kaitielynnrichardson that is so frustrating! If it makes you feel better my LO is smaller than Cole and our dr is not concerned. She's steadily gaining but just less than the charts say.
I'm beginning to think those charts are a little rigged because so many drs have you supplement if the baby is low on the charts, so if most drs do that they are making all babies bigger so the charts will gradually become skewed toward heavier babies.

  • My baby is formula fed, eats 30oz a day, and is still a lot lighter than her two siblings were at this age. Babies have different body types just like grown ups.

Moshe has also been trying to stand all the time, and she's only 3 months old. Ignore, and don't schedule with her for the next check up

  • Thank you!! Makes me feel much better to hear from mommas with babies the same age.  I feel like we are doing all the right things and Cole is just fine :) by his 6 month appointment our regular ped. will be back - thank the lord!  Even DH was annoyed, that's saying a lot bc generally speaking hes wayyyy to easy going.
  • How much did he weigh at birth? Because it's the curve that matters not the actual weight. 14 pounds at 4 months sounds great. My LO has his 4 month checkup this week and I'll be happy if he's 12 pounds. But he is was below the curve when he was born. Some babies are small and some are larger. She sounds really uninformed. Not every baby is going to be in the 50%!

  • He was 7lbs 7oz at birth.  She wrote that he's in the 25-50 percentile on our baby book page.. but again he's only 3.5 months so he's got a couple of weeks to go before she can compare him to a 4 month chart.  I saw the curve and while it wasn't as big of an increase as last time, he still gained 2 pounds in two months.. plus I went back to work so he's no longer feeding on demand. Very uninformed is correct.
  • My kid is 3.5 months and just hit 10 lbs last week! Tbh I would ignore her and check in with your regular pediatrician about his legs next time you see her.
  • Do NOT feel obligated to use formula, if you do not want to. If YOUR ped hasn't seemed concerned over weight gain, then clearly your child is thriving. I would definitely ask about it at your next appointment, or even shoot her an email. Some drs may still respond to emails while out on ML. Our ped is actually MY dr from when I was a little girl, and she responded to my moms phone calls/messages while out. But this may not be the case, so I would check with the office.

  • Definitely don't feel the need to supplement with formula! If they were really concerned the first step should be to supplement with BM- add 1 ounce to his bottle or give 1 ounce after you breastfeed. If you're able, of course. That being said babies should gain 0.5-1 ounce per day, which is about 2-4 pounds a month and it seems as though that's what he is doing.

  • My daughter is 3 1/2 months and weighs about 12.5lbs. She was born in the 5th percentile and now in the 25th. Her dr said shes just a peanut and couldn't ask for a better growth chart. I would def voice your concerns to your reg dr and ask not to see the other one again. I did that with my ob office. I didn't care for the nurse practitioner so I only seen my ob. Oh and my daughter has been "standing" for weeks. He always mentions how strong she is and says it's a good thing.
  • Thank you all for your comments, advice, and support!!  <3 this group!!!

  • My son is on the other emd of the spectrum. He was 7#2 oz at birth at 36 weeks gestation. Now at 18 weeks pp he is 20#. So it depends  on baby and as long as the doctir doesnt seem worried i wouldnt either. Also damon has been standing for over a month now.
