Early milk?

Right, so I'm 31w tomorrow. She measures 2 weeks ahead, but I think that's beside the point...for the last few weeks I've been able to express a LOT of fluid from my nipples by hand, and it comes out in streams. It's mostly pretty watery, there's a little whitish color to it, but everytime I squeeze my nipple there's a lot. (I know that sounds funny but lately I just do it for mere fascination purposes.)

I'm not engorged or in pain, and I don't see the purpose of trying to pump any of this (that thing scares me a lot right now anyway)...

Anyone going through this? What should I do?

Re: Early milk?

  • Don't express your milk for a couple of reasons. 1) it could trigger contractions that cause you to go into labor early 2) the first milk produced is colostrum and is ment to be baby's first food since it's so high in nutrients and things baby needs in the first days. If you express it baby won't get that benefit. I get that you are a bit fascinated by what's happening but you should just lay off for a while ;)

  • While part of this is true, part is not. Your body will make colostrum up to 3-5 days after your placenta detaches. You will NOT run out of colostrum before baby gets all that it needs.

OP, It's just one of those things. Some ladies leak from about 12weeks on, and some never do.

I'm leaking a lot this time. My OB said this is completely normal. I just wear breast pads. I don't think pumping or hand expressing is necessary.

  • I've been concerned because I've had barely any leakage at almost 31 weeks. Anyone else?
  • I am 33 weeks and I do not have any leakage that i can feel. But I realize I am leaking in very small amounts because I find dried milk/colostrum residues in my bra or in my sleep wear.

No leakage here. I don't think it's anything to worry about.
  • Stop expressing your milk.  It will just make it worse.

Glad I'm not the only one. I keep getting the let down type feeling that I remember from my other kids, but nothing is ever there.
  • I'm 35 so weeks and no leakage. Try not to worry!

I verified with my mom (a lc). She said it's totally normal that some women don't have leakage.
  • @jenesiso did the doctors draw any causal links with your already available colostrum/breastmilk and the reasoning for admission??
