Re: Ferber Success Stories?

  • how was your 1st nightSucky. ?Took about an hour of crying & checking.?how long did it take youWe saw a huge improvement in 3 nights. ?We were willing to give it a week before making a decision, when we started at 9 months. ?He made so much progress that it was enough to convince DH & I.?how is DC sleeping after Ferber?Much, much better. ?Though he has 2 teeth coming in. ?We don't let him CIO much at all when he is teething or when he had a cold. ?We play it by ear and take it one night at a time.?It's not for everybody, but I am a huge believer.?

  • we did ferber about a month ago.  I still nurse him to sleep, so we only used it for the night wakings.

First night was easy, compared to what came later: <20 minutes at the first wakeup, and < 15 for the subsequent 4 wakeups (this was already an improvement on our 8+ wakeups per night)

Second-Fifth nights sucked.  The second night was about 90 minutes of crying for the first wakeup, <15 for the subsequent 2 wakeups; third night was about 45 minutes the first wakeup, <15 for subsequent 2 wakeups; fourth night was still 45 minutes, but on and off, <15 for subsequent 2 wakeups.  By the fifth or sixth night, we were down to two wakeups total.  The first one would be the worst, varying between 15-30 minutes, and the second one would be inversely correlated to the first (so the better the first, the worse the second, and vice versa) but no longer than 30 minutes.

Then, we took a "break" for the holidays.  We traveled to my parents' and would offer him the paci at the first wakeup (normally we just rubbed his back).  It lasted about the same as at home.  I would immediately pull him into bed on the second wake-up, usually between 5-6.  Then, his family traveled to our house - with an 8 week old, so we rocked back to sleep at the first wakeup to avoid any crying, and still pulled him into bed with the second.

As soon as they left, we started with the training for the first wakeup again, but kept the second the same (into bed).  Within 5 days, he was sleeping though until 5 (the second wakeup), with minimal crying.  Night before last, he woke up at 4:30, but by the time I was ready to get him, he was back asleep and slept until 6.  So, we used that opportunity to eliminate the second waking last night.  He woke several times with teething, so we "cheated" with the paci, but we made him wait until 6 to eat, which he did, and then went back to sleep in his crib until 7:30!  This, to me, would be success, since I have to get up at that time to get ready for work anyway.

Sorry so long, but I found that when I was going through it, it helped to know the good, the bad, and the ugly about other people's experiences.

Mommy to Seth (4) and Catherine Anne (13 mo.) Excited to welcome a third child in March of 2013!
