Boobs!

Anyone else feel like their boobs have gotten huge? I'm noticing clevage with shirts that I never had before. My bras are really uncomfortable, they come off the moment I get home!  Anyone else?

What is the best plan of attack here? Where should I go bra shopping? Any suggestions? I normally go to Victoria's Secret, but I'm wondering are there better options or things I should look for?

Re: Boobs!

  • My got massive and feel like they have heartburn, lol. This was not an early pregnancy symptom with my first pregnancy

  • I invested in some good VS bras when I knew I wasn't going to get bigger during breastfeeding. The rest of the time I lived in sports bras.

  • When I'm sitting on the floor or couch, and my little one runs up to me for a hug, I kind of whimper. They are pretty tender right now (at 6 weeks) and I'm having flashbacks of mastitis from the last time around. The solutions there are acetaminophen, hot wet washcloths, and deep massage, but I'm not at that point yet. I'm kind of denying hugs right now which stinks....

If you want a really good fit, you could call the intimates department of a good dept store and see when they offer bra fittings and go that route. Don't just guess. VS can measure you, too, though I haven't been to a VS in awhile but I'm thinking you might want to go somewhere a little less expensive (with more comfortable options), because your boobs will likely change again in a few months and you'll need to do this again. I'd go for comfort, wide shoulder straps, and no underwire, think comfort and softness all the way. Some women swear by workout bras / jog bras and prefer that they be less likely to move around and be more squished in (for lack of a better term). Good luck!
  • Even basic no wire bras are so uncomfortable to me right now. I saw a piece of "some like it hot" today and thought Marilyn and I were boob twins. But as far as VS my last pregnancy I worked there so I could buy the Body by Victoria Demi's in whatever size I needed at employee discount price which was nice but this time I'll just get cheaper options until I settle into a size later on. (Went from 32D-32DDD last time and now I'm 34C).
  • Yes! I noticed that mine have already gone up a cup size! They hurt really bad last week, but I think that was because they were growing so suddenly. Now it just feels like soreness and they only hurt when I actually put pressure on them.

  • Mine are awful! Any time I lie down, bounce, or hug someone they ache. Not to mention they've grown and I was already a 34F :( bras still fit...kind of! I did find a maternity one online that will also work later for nursing. Hoping that it will keep the girls more comfy at nighttime so I can fall asleep easier with less pain.
  • Bigger/sore boobs was one of my first signs that I was pregnant. It happened during my TWW and I kept trying to convince myself that it was too early for any signs. They've pretty much been like that ever since. Some days are more sore than others. I didn't have this happen with my DD's pregnancy until the third trimester. It is crazy how different my two pregnancies have been so far. I can't believe it's the same body going through them both.

If your bras aren't fitting, I'd say it's time to buy new ones. I wouldn't go super expensive, as you'll likely be buying more in a larger size later on.
  • Yes to all of this! They're huge and so so sore!!  I think I'll be sticking with sports bras for a while. (Confession - I wore my favorite to work on Sunday, today and plan to again tomorrow!!)
  • I failed miserably at trying to find a cheap "for now" sized bra at Target. I know I won't fit a larger size at VS for my rib size. I'm at at loss. I was in a 32 DD in VS before and that just isn't cutting it anymore.
  • @allowachick I don't know where you live but we have a boutique bra store in my city that will measure you and really out you in the right size. Plus they stock basically any size you could want. They're not cheap so I know a lot of my friends go there and get fitted, find a bra brand/style they like and then find it online for cheaper. Ours is called Barbara's New Beginnings but I think stores like that are becoming more and more popular
  • I'm still breastfeeding baby #1 and it's starting to hurt really bad. My nipples are so sore! But he's not ready to wean yet.
  • I went up a cup size two weeks ago. It was a long frustrating shopping day. I had some success at VS, but the only wire free bras were pull-over-your-head sports bra style. I wanted a regular bra with hooks- just not with wire cups! After being so frustrated trying to find a wire free bra that would fit, I went in a maternity store. There, I was reminded of sister sizes. Oh yeah! Lightbulb moment. They didn't carry my true size (very few places would), so I increased the band, and decreased the cup. I went ahead and bought the bras at that place. When I got home I realized 1) I probably could have found a cheaper one elsewhere in the sister size, and 2) I bought nursing bras. Lol. Hopefully I'll fit in them again when I'm nursing.

(explaining better fitting bra sizes because this was news to me even a year ago. Feel free to skip if you know it.)

While the most comfortable "true" bra size is your ribcage measurement for band and adding +each inch for cup, 1 inch more is A, 2 is B, 3 is C, etc, that would mean stores have to stock a lot of sizes. Example measuring underbust/ribcage of 36 inches and bust at 40 would make someone a 36D. If for some reason the 36D's are sold out, going up to 38C or down to 34DD/E would be sister sizes and have a similar fit. Here is a sister size chart.

  • I completely forgot about the sister sizes!! My friend suggested Target nursing bras, I grabbed a few last night, but I didn't grab the right sizes
  • Mine haven't grown one bit! I am waiting!... I used to have some nice big milk boobs but they deflated recently since I stopped BF my DS. My MIL said her boobs look "like a tennis ball in a tube sock" after BF 4 kids. I am scared to see what my boobs look like after BF baby #2....
  • With my first, I went from a DD to a freaking H. And they NEVER went back down. They're definitely larger right now. I haven't been measured lately though. I buy my bras at Lane Bryant/Cacique. I'm a plus sized momma, and their bras are the best

Ugh, me too!  It's awful!  Her birthday is next week and I'm contemplating cutting her off cold turkey as soon as she's one. I can't decide if that's ok to do or not.

Mine either!  And I also used to have great boobs prior to BF that totally deflated when I stopped.

It worries me a bit because they really aren't sore either.  I know women have different symptoms but it worries me not to have one that is so common.

Mine weren't sore last time or this time, I wouldn't worry.
  • I have extremely small boobs. I wish they would grow already!

  • This may be unpopular opinion but my boobs didn't grow at all during my first pregnancy and I was smaller, around a B. And I hated it. I remember a lot of moms on my last BMB going "my bump is finally sticking out more than my breasts!" while I'm over here like yeah that happened when the bloat started. But when the milk did come in, holy crap. I never got measured and just wore size S/M nursing bras instead but I probably went up to a D when I was full. Most of my bras came from Target for cheap and they were fine.

  • During my first pregnancy I stayed a D cup until my milk came in. I didn't nurse so they didn't stay engorged. ( years later on baby #2 I have a C cup and really wish they would get a bit bigger but nothing so far.

The freaking hurt though! Sometimes the soreness wakes me up in the middle of the night.

  • I literally looked at mine in amazement at the change and then got on here and here is your post. I feel like it's been like an overnight thing. My bra size tripled with DS. But it was only temporary of course. I'm a lifetime member of the IBTC but when I'm pregnant I explore the other side lol

  • I bought a wireless one in my sister size from Target, and it's super comfortable but I'll not fit in it for long!
  • 8 weeks and no soreness in the boobs except when someone hugs me, it's funny because I can't remember if my boobs ever hurt before from a hug or if it's new.

    Sidenote:
I really miss target. We had it for about a year before they closed down all the Canadian stores.
  • Yes!! Mine are ginormous and feel so heavy! Hubby is more than fine with it though.... *eyeroll* I don't want them to be touched constantly! Lol

SKZW gives good advice: My last pregnancy I got fitted at a Dillards and those bras were awesome.  The lady had to run back and forth about a million times to find ones that fit perfectly, but they were worth their weight in gold.  Much better than the experiences I've had at VS.
Married 10 years.  1 DD (5 y/o).  Thrilled to be pregnant with LO#2 after almost 3 years of trying:  due May 2017

  • @SKZW thanks! And, you weaned in a weekend? I remember it taking much longer than that with my first daughter!  Did you not end up really engorged? Any secrets to making weaning super quick?
  • @Squirtgun I actually had so much boob pain (with every feeding) at the time that I just wanted it to end, so maybe I rushed it faster and maybe I was engorged but I don't remember the details except for the relief. (Pumping helped me feel better.) My LO was awesome and totally went with the flow. I think what helped us have a smooth transition was that we used breast milk bottles from time to time so he'd already gotten over that hump: the nipple was not foreign, you know what I mean? Then that wkend we did bottles of 1/4 breast milk to formula, then 1/2, then 3/4, and then all-formula, and he just totally was a champ and didn't fight it. The times that he nuzzled looking for the boob, I offered the bottle, and when you're hungry, you'll take it. I still cooed and talked to him and gave him those things he was used to during feedings. Someone told me that weaning can be tough on both parties, but the key is to remember you can offer comfort and nurturing in so many other ways, and that this is just one way, and although this process closes the chapter it opens others. Know what I mean? Hope this answers your Qs!

Mine either! Last time mine got enormous and sore almost immediately (I bought a nursing bra like at week 8 just bc I figured I might as well if I'm buying new bras anyway). This time my boobs haven't changed at all. I was kind of looking forward to them plumping up right away again! Lol
  • Sister sizes never work for me.  I'll probably have to order online somewhere with a reasonable return policy.
  • Ugh yes my boobs have gotten so much bigger (and tender!) Maybe TMI but my husband and I attempted to weigh them on a food scale when we found out I was pregnant so we could see how much they would grow!

I wear a 32DD/34D but I'm definitely spilling out of those now... band is a little tight too! Have to find a good bra store to get sized. Probably a silly question but do they sell bras at maternity stores?

@CherylE418 Same! My husband is enjoying them. One of my maternity books said something like "look don't touch" so I'm always saying that to him now! :D

  • @oliveoil they do but they tend to be nursing bras, some people do chose to just get those though.  So far the ones I've tried have been extra roomy for their marked size and thusly not as supportive
  • @sp128- I hear you!! I jokingly call mine mosquito bites!

Itty Bitties do have many advantages though- bra shopping in the kids section ia
    very affordable!

I'm in the same boat! We are night weaning currently.
  • Soma has amazing bras and very supportive and don't leave your shoulders killing you!!
