How many weeks are you?

How are your blood glucose numbers?  Any spikes?

What's one thing you cannot wait to do or eat after the baby comes?

Rants/Raves/Questions?

How are your blood glucose numbers?  Any spikes? They've actually been really good, overall. A few spikes here and there but nothing too high over my 120 threshold.  I went to the doctor yesterday and she was pretty pleased with my numbers and said no injectable insulin right now!

What's one thing you cannot wait to do or eat after the baby comes? I want to carb load-  not just bread- but I want all the sweets.  I have a sweet tooth that is so hard to control, and it makes it sticking to the GD diet very hard.  But I did go out on Saturday for my birthday with a couple of girlfriends and I made sure not to eat any bread at dinner, had a steak and avoided the baked potato in lieu of grilled asparagus so I could eat 1/2 of a piece of cheesecake which did not spike my sugar level. I read somewhere that desserts based more on dairy products aren't as bad as like chocolate cake or brownies or anything like that!  So it helped some with my sweet tooth!

    Rants/Raves/Questions?

Raves- I got to have cheesecake!

Rants- When I went to the doctor yesterday the baby was measuring a full 2 weeks ahead so I might end up with a C-section this time around, not my ideal, but since I'm also AMA, any way that's safe to get this baby out- is fine with me.  He/she is already 3 pounds. Dr. thinks I'll end up having an 8.5 pound baby!

Questions- since the baby is 2 weeks ahead, does that always mean he/she will be 2 weeks ahead or does the rate of growth slow down as I get my blood sugar numbers under control?

How are your blood glucose numbers?  Any spikes?  Just saw the diabetes educator and got my monitor this morning, so I've only tested twice so far (after breakfast and lunch today), but had two-hour post meal readings of 86 and 89, so I can't really complain about that!

What's one thing you cannot wait to do or eat after the baby comes?  All of the chocolate!  I have a sweet tooth, so not having (or REALLY limiting) dessert for a few months is going to be kind of difficult.  I have both of my baby showers coming up and another one for a friend of mine who is due in November, so I may treat myself to a tiny bit of dessert on those days!  I'll just have to watch the rest of my carb intake.

Rants/Raves/Questions?  Nothing yet, just started testing and I will see my MD again on Monday, so we'll see what they tell me.  I'm hoping *maybe* they'll adjust my due date closer to the beginning of December, but you never know...  The most challenging part for me won't be the testing or the dietary changes, but keeping to a consistent meal schedule due to my job.  Basically I was eating whenever I had a spare moment to, but I'm going to try to be a little better about sticking to specified time frames.

How are your blood glucose numbers?  Any spikes? Unfortunately yes, I've been slightly over in the 140's or low 150's on a couple occasions though I don't understand why.

What's one thing you cannot wait to do or eat after the baby comes?

Pasta pasta pasta!! I need me some homemade mac n cheese! Also peanut butter fudge ugghh droooling.

    Rants/Raves/Questions?

Super frustrated w my readings. This morning my 1 hour after breakfast was 160. I knew it couldn't be right so I re-tested and got 143. Less than a minute apart! How the heck can that be?! I'm questioning the accuracy of my machine now and planning to call the diabetic center this morning. Last night I was at 148 post dinner and waited 40 minutes then retested and was at 94. HOW. So much confusion here. Also super impatient waiting on the ultrasound place to call me and schedule a scan. I need to know how big this babe is!

  • @squiddy224 those are fantastic numbers!  I totally had cheesecake one night after dinner, but didn't have any carbs at dinner and it the 1/2 of a piece of cheesecake did not affect my numbers at all nor did they adversely affect my fasting numbers. If you pair your dessert with some sort of protein, you might escape a spike. :)

@mforinger- you might try asking your MD if you can test 2 hours after eating from what I've learned it is more indicative of a more stable reading, but I'm not an MD- I'm not even in the medical profession so I could be TOTALLY wrong.

As for the 160 and 2 seconds later a 143- I do know that I got a false reading once, so if you are in doubt, I'd totally retest again.  What machine are you using?  Maybe it needs to be calibrated- if there is such a thing?  I'd def. call the diabetic center and see what they suggest.

I know it's frustrating and maddening.  It does get better, I promise.  Or at least it starts to kind of fit into your life- somehow.

Are you eating snacks between meals (if allowed by your dietician)?  Sometimes not eating can adversely affect your glucose level (according to my dietician).

Once you get your numbers where they want them, you may be able to have some peanut butter fudge (peanut butter is a protein :)), but not a whole lot.

I'm so sorry- I'm here if you want to vent, rant, or rage.  Fingers crossed for a quick call from the u/s place!!

  • @phoebecar thanks so much for your sweet words. I just called the diabetic nurse and she was basically no help. Asked me if I'm washing my hands before each reading, yes. If I'm leaving my strips somewhere they can get too hot/cold no.. Ect. No real explanation for how I could get one number and retest for a much lower number 30 seconds later.

The dietician has a copy of my food records and readings from the last week that I faxed yesterday so she's supposed to look over it and call me to talk about it. I'm just so terrified of needing insulin and no one will tell me at what point that becomes a mandatory thing. The nurse told me there are no levels of severity w GD you either have it or you don't, which I find hard to believe. Fingers crossed that someone can actually answer some questions and ease my mind a little!

How are your blood glucose numbers?  Any spikes?

My 7 day average is 121. Only one crazy morning spike of 165.

What's one thing you cannot wait to do or eat after the baby comes?

Lay on my stomach and drink a coke. Preferably at the same time.

  • @mforinger- my MD said having spikes over 50% of the time would need to be examined and with a possibility of adding an insulin shot.  I don't know what kind of machine you have, but take a look at the instruction manual- there might be a place to "calibrate" it.  that's what the pharmacist did when she showed me how to use the darn thing. Or at least that's what she told me she was doing.  It really does sound like an anomaly or a machine problem for that one instance.

@cayaylonglegs I spit out my water on my computer :) I love Ursala!

  • Good Morning. I'm lurking from January 2017. I had an early GTT at 21 weeks and was diagnosed with GD. Not many others on my BMB have had their tests yet and as of now there are only 2 of us checking in. I hope you don't mind me lurking here. I have been touching base with some of the October 2016 ladies who have been very helpful but they are starting to have their babies so I thought I'd see if I could find a BMB a little closer to mine.

How many weeks are you? 24w3d (EDD 1/8/17 but right now don't have any hopes of making it there)

How are your blood glucose numbers?  Any spikes? My first week, my fasting numbers were all coming back high so I played with my evening snack and I've had a solid week with no high fasting numbers. I've also only had one spike in the last week and I think my banana at breakfast may have been the culprit.

What's one thing you cannot wait to do or eat after the baby comes? A big bowl of ice cream. I've been so nervous about even having half a cup of ice cream that I haven't tested it yet. Maybe this weekend.

Rants/Raves/Questions? Have any of you started having regular growth scans/NST's? When did those typically start? I have a list of questions for my doctor who I see next week but trying to get some ideas on certain things. (PS Thanks for letting me lurk in advance)

  • @carly79 welcome aboard!  you are absolutely welcome here!!  I have had only one growth scan at 27+3 and only because I have a history of pre-e and PIH but from my understanding as time grows near I will have more u/s and NSTs just to check the weight of the baby to determine if a C-section is necessary.

Some ice-cream may be okay if you haven't hit your carb load for that particular meal and you don't eat a whole lot in one setting. I had cheesecake on Saturday night and it didn't mess with my after dinner numbers nor my fasting numbers the next day!

How are your blood glucose numbers?  Any spikes? Great! No spikes at all. My doctor wants me to do another week of a sugar log because she thought my numbers were too good- ummmmm isn't that what we are aiming for????

What's one thing you cannot wait to do or eat after the baby comes? SUSHI, TURKEY SANDWICH, AND AN ITALIAN HERO! @cayaylonglegs I am feeling you on laying on the stomach- I miss it sooo much!!

Rants/Raves/Questions? I just really miss eating sweets.... I miss them so much. I could  write each type of sweet a love letter and explain everything I love and miss about them. Like right now - I'd loveeeeeee a big, soft, chewy chocolate chip cookie.

@Carly79 GO BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM!!!!!  Just kidding!! Welcome to our Club! Go for the ice cream- then afterwards go on a nice walk! That always helps. In terms of the scans/etc. I go this Monday for my 2 week checkup. When I saw the dr. last time he said everything will start sooner... so for instance he told me prior that my 3rd trimester ultrasound happens at week 36...So I am assuming that's going to change and happen sooner. Also he said they will start doing NST's to check how she's doing. But I will let you know what he says!

  • @Sammyl1221Thanks! I already have figured out that one recess peanut butter pumpkin is 1 carb choice and doesn't seem to spike my numbers (not that I've tested the theory too often). I also have found the monster trail mix from Target you can get 1/4cup as one carb choice and that had some sweet to it to help tide me over. The fiber one lemon brownie things are also 1 carb choice so I'm finding some ways to incorporate sweet things back in. But I hear you, a nice big chocolate chip cookie sounds wonderful :)

@phoebecar Thanks to you too! If I can get to Friday without any spikes I think I'm going to try the icecream. found I couldn't have greek yogurt at night and am worried the dairy part of the icecream may have the same effect. May have to have an icecream snack middle of the afternoon and then walk like suggested.

  • Hey I  just wanted to update this thread since I had my appt. with my ob/gyn today and got some insight.

Soooo I actually lost 6lbs in the last 2 weeks. My doctor stressed the importance of eating 2000 calories a day. Obviously having no carbs and sweets is really screwing me up! Lots of small snacks throughout the day will help this.
-I start my weekly visits after week 32. NST's and ultrasounds starts at week 34.
-SInce I am not on medicine and/or insulin my doctor will let me go to my due date +5 days. After that they will induce. Obviously if things show differently on NST's and ultrasounds they will assess it then. Overall minus the weight loss issue I was really happy with the visit and got alot of my questions answered.

@Carly79 hope this clarifies some things for you!

  • @sammyl1221 Thanks! That's awesome that they will let you go over your due date pending everything else continues to look good. I see my OB tomorrow for the first time since my test came back so I'm anxious to see what their thoughts are.

Do you not get to have any carbs, or do you mean low carbs is impacting the calorie count? It is hard, I guess on the plus side, because my BMI was higher before I got pregnant I just have to focus on 1800 calories (which I don't think I've been getting but I am close). I lost 2lbs in 2 weeks, I'm anxious to see what my weight is tomorrow compared to 4 weeks ago. I haven't been counting actual calories so I really don't want to do that. However, I did see that a recess pumpkin is 1 carb choice so fits in nicely for a snack occasionally and found that ice cream so far doesn't seem to mess with my numbers, I just have to keep it to 1 cup for my 2 carb choices for a snack. Also, PB is a staple and while 1 tbsp. isn't loaded in the fat and calories it does help with the calorie/healthy fat intake. I've also been adding almonds in which help from that perspective too.

Good luck keeping your weight gain/loss under control for your doctors.

@Carly79  I do have carbs but I really  just keep them to a minimum for each meal. I was eating alot of sweets prior which was definitely helping me pack on the pounds. I totally agree with the counting calories thing. I am not about that life. I just to try gauge each meal and snack I am having. And yes to the PB! It's pretty much a staple for me.
