NIPT

Anyone doing the genetic testing and if so are you finding out the gender?  For those of us that have already had it done, what test did you do and how long until you received your results?

I had the panorama done on Monday 9/12. No results yet and OF COURSE we are finding out the gender :)

ETA: monday brain + pregnancy brain had me thinking this was still August.

  • Mine are scheduled for the 30th. We are finding out the sex. We didn't find out at all with our first, and my husband said this time around we are finding out as soon as possible.

  • @Taylor72 I hope you meant 9/12! I am getting the Harmony test on 9/28 due to AMA and I hope it doesn't take too long for the results to come back...

So, that is part of the 1st trimester screening, correct? I am still slightly confused by this whole thing. I am getting the NT ultrasound and bloodwork for the 1st trimester screening done in a couple weeks on 10/6. I didn't think you could find out gender with that. I have heard of the Harmony test and knew you could find out gender that way. But, I don't think that is the one they give to everyone. Can anyone fill me in. Not a big deal really. We plan on finding out the gender at the anatomy scan for sure. I am fine waiting and might actually prefer it.

Yeah, as far as I know the traditional NT ultrasound/bloodwork does not include a sex reveal.  Our clinic was very firm that no sex reveal would occur until the anatomy scan at 20 weeks, probably due to the high margin of error in early weeks.

  • @KirstinH88 and @Jerilu ok, thanks. That is what I thought. Is there a specific reason that some people get the Harmony test? Is the only difference the gender thing?

  • @mrsstuessy as far as I understood it when my dr was talking about it, the blood work can be done in conjunction with the NT scan or you can just have one or the other done.  I opted for the blood work because we wanted to know the gender as well.  Basically, the panorama tells your risk of genetic issues.
  • @TheJerilu @mrsstuessy @KirstinH88 Thanks for clarifying this as well. My insurance told me all of these tests fell under "genetic screening" which required preauthorization, and I went round and round with my OB's practice and insurance before determining that in all likelihood, it wouldn't get covered.  (My OB would not preauthorize because they do not do the actual testing, and the place they'd send me to do the testing told me my OB is the only one who could preauthorize. Ugh) Therefore, we are not doing it, and I'm good with that personally, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I'm ready to see my sweet little nugget on the screen again and make sure everything is okay!  :/

  • Jumping in here, I just had blood drawn for the panorama test last week when I was 11 weeks along. This is totally different from your NT scan and related bloodwork which will not give you any indication of the sex. I had an ectopic pregnancy (which resulted in the loss of my tube) and two miscarriages before having a successful pregnancy with my daughter, so we opted into this test to put our minds at ease. Finding out the sex is a given since they examine the baby's chromosomes for abnormalities. I know they tend to offer these sort of tests to people who are AMA or have had multiple losses. Hope this helps
  • @schef070911
Ugh, I'm going through a similar thing right now - HR told us on sign up and in our paperwork packets that maternity/prenatal care is totally covered by our insurance etc etc.  Got a nice bill for my dating ultrasound this weekend because apparently the fine print needs everything pre-certified after confirmation.  I have to do the insurance phone call this afternoon, thanks for the reminder!

  • So, what are they testing for in my blood during the NT/first trimeter screen? I thought they were looking for genetic/chromosomal issues there as well.

  • My doc recommended the Harmony test and advised it has a higher accuracy rate than the NT scan. I believe it screens for Down's syndrome, trisomy 18 and 13.

  • @ShelbyTaryn what day did you have yours done? I am (not so patiently) waiting for the results of mine.  Let me know when you get yours back!
  • @mrsstuessy I believe the NT screen measures levels of a hormone that may indicate an increased risk for Downs Syndrome only. The Panorama & Harmony tests go beyond that to include other genetic abnormalities as well.
  • @hollyh98 I am getting the NT scan and the bloodwork and that also screens for DS, trisomy 18 and 13. So, sounds like the same thing. ugh. I guess I just need to talk to my midwife about all this. It is so confusing.

  • Going to get blood drawn for MaterniT21 (because AMA) and first tri screen on Wednesday.  My OB said that we are doing both I think because the California Prenatal Screening Program won't cover the second trimester screen if we don't do the first.  So sort of silly and redundant, but that's what I was told.

We are finding out the gender...eventually.  DH had sort of joked about starting a pool of some sort on the gender, but I don't really want to announce to the world (ever - but would certainly be more comfortable doing so at 20 weeks than at 13 when next appt/NT scan is scheduled), so we may just save it for a due date pool.  If we don't find out right away, we may wait till 20 week scan, but I don't really see the point (plus I'm impatient!).

  • @mrsstuessy My notes from 1st OB visit and discussing genetic screening say that the 1st trimester portion of the NT scan screens for Trisomy 18 and 21.  (I didn't write down anything about Trisomy 13 so not sure about that one.) 2nd semester NT bloodwork screens primarily for neural tube defects.

  • I'll be getting blood drawn at my next appointment for free cell DNA testing. As far as I know, insurance isn't going to cover it ($349) but my Dr said it's more accurate than a quad screen so she recommends it. We'll also be finding out the gender. I can't believe we'll know the gender in less than 3 weeks!!
  • My doctor doesn't do screening until I believe 15 weeks. He does a quad screen, I asked about the other earlier testing and he said for my age and no prior issues he doesn't feel the earlier ones are necessary. I believe that's the only testing I did with DD as well. We will do an early US to find out the gender at 15 weeks though.

  • @cafedisco Not sure when they started doing the tests, but my SIL said they were not available for her oldest (age 5.5) and were available for her youngest two (ages 1 and 3).

  • We did it with #2 and will be doing it this time, next week is the blood draw. They say 7-10 days for results and I think it was 6-8 days last time. We will be finding out the sex, I have to know.  We have two girls and I'm convinced this is a boy, so it's absolutely driving me crazy.
  • STM over here. We didn't do any genetic testing with our LO, mainly because no matter the results, we would keep the baby. However, this second time around, we are considering in doing the screening. Now that we have LO and know how much work it is with a "normal" child, we would like to be prepared in case something is wrong with #2. The test screens for Downs, Trisonomy, Spinal Bifida and this other one I can't remember. There are two blood tests and an ultrasound.

I was tested for Zika since I was in Mexico right before getting pregnant. It took 6+ weeks to get the results. I'm grateful it came back negative!

  • I'm getting the cell free test done on Thurs (at 12+1) which will give us the chromosomal abnormalities as well as gender.  Not sure how/if this differs from Harmony?  I didn't get it first time around but it's covered by my insurance and I hated waiting on the genetic tests results well into 2nd tri so figured why not.  I'm also having NT scan on the same day.
  • We're just skipping it. After a long call with insurance that's probably for the best as my coverage is pretty meager and I'd rather just put the money it would take towards paying the midwife. The additional screening for me will be at the end of the pregnancy in the form of a detailed ultrasound with a perinatologist. My son had a defect of his intestines and was breech, so we'll look for anything like that.
  • I did the Harmony test with DS because we had some potential soft markers for Downs. My OB preauthorized it, so insurance covered PART of it (they fought back because of my age not being high enough to indicate increased risk for Downs). I elected not to find out the sex. It took for-ev-er for my results to come back...I think they came back about a week before my AS, when we would have just been able to see if the markers were still there or not.
