Question for moms with circumcised boys

Levi was circumcised at 10 days old and had to go back less than two week later to get a small adhesion fixed.  Now, at 11 weeks old, I noticed yesterday that he has another adhesion and the "rim" area is red all the way around.  I've kept it really clean and I'm putting either Vaseline or rash cream on it at diaper changes.  Calling Pediatrician to go in Monday but looking for your experiences in this area.  It doesn't seem painful to touch and he's had normal wet diapers.
I had been doing so good keeping an eye on it but I guess with starting back to work and him being in daycare I haven't done my job as well as I should.  I feel so guilty for letting this happen.  I'll see what doc says and also mention to daycare to start putting Vaseline on him.  I never mentioned it to them bc he had been fine.  I didn't have the forethought that this might be an issue.  Ugh, I need some reassurance.

Re: Question for moms with circumcised boys

  • We are dealing with the same issue, but what upsets me the most is that no one along the way...in the hospital, during our childbirth classes, pediatricians office...told us that this could be an issue and that the skin should be pulled back in addition to putting the Vaseline and gauze until it healed and after. Our son has some fatty tissue that goes up around the head of his penis, and the fact that it needed to be pulled back was never communicated and thay is what irks me to no end. If you Google 'penile adnesion', you'll see that this is a really common issue, too, so why this is something not included in circumcision care directions is beyond me.

Anyways, with our son who was 9 or 10 weeks when we noticed it (now 12 weeks), about half of the skin around the head of the penis is attached, and we ended up taking him to the pediatrician to check it. I started putting Vaseline on it every day until the doctor appt, and basically he said unless the skin is softened up, it would hurt him too much to try to unattach the skin. He said to start pulling it back a little with diaper changes and after its been soaking in warm water after baths when it is softened up the most. He said it should eventually be able to unattach. I have also been putting Vaseline on it at every diaper change, and I don't know how well that is really working, but it can't hurt to try.

It doesnt seem to bother him at all, but when I noticed the adhesion, I was sick to my stomach at the fact that this is something that could cause him pain to unattach or give him issues later in life.  Doing any kind of Internet research only made things worse. People saying that their pediatrician just yanked the skin back without any numbing cream or babies needing surgery to fix it.....reading about it definitely made me exprience some major guilt as well, and I lost some sleep over it. After two weeks, I've just been doing what our pediatrician said, and I figure we will see where we are at his four months visit, and hopefully we will see some progress before then.

I totally understand the emotions you are having, and hopefully going to the pediatrician will make you feel better about it and give you the reassurance you need. Please give an update as well after your visit to let me know what they tell you!

  • Did your son have the plastibell or the traditional circumcision? My son had the traditional circumcision and had no issues, we only did Vaseline the first couple of weeks and then it was fine. It was red for awhile but his pediatrician said it looked great. I'm sorry you are going through this, hopefully your son's pediatrician will have some answers for you.

  • Yes, you have to pull the skin back a bit and clean it or it can grow back over. No one had told us until a month later.
  • Doc looked today and pulled it apart.  That makes it sound worse than it was.  It was a small spot and just really starting to adhere.  She only had to work with it a few seconds, so I caught it before it really got stuck.  I knew after the first one to pull the skin and use Vaseline but I guess with work and daycare and nearly two months of no issue I slacked a little.  Won't be making that mistake again. She wasn't concerned with the redness he had...just said keep it lubed up.
  • That's good to hear!
