Do you plan activites for a 3 year old party?

Owen's 3rd birthday is coming up and we are haveing a Toy Story (specifically Buzz and Woody) party at our house. Last year we just had the baby pool out and a sprinkler and then all of Owen's toys to play with. At what age do you plan games and stuff? We have a wide range of kid ages from 2-7 with all of our friends kids, so I'm not sure what to do.

I was thinking of maybe renting a bouncy thing also. Has anyone done this and have any pros/cons?

  • I did for Finn's 3rd with the lightening mcqueen theme (hell, I did it with Riley's 2 yr old music party too, ha!  but there were bigger kids there), but not in a "OK everybody, time to go do this..." but in a "I'm leaving these car boxes out and you can run around the race track I made when/if you want".  I've found the parties where you go and everyone has to stop what they are doing to go do an activity/game is REALLY hard, the kids don't want to stop doing whatever they are doing and then the parents all feel badly and are trying to get their kid to go do what you want them to do and then it just isn't fun.  my two cents.

  • We had some activities planned for Macy's 3rd birthday in June and I think it worked out great. The theme was princess pirate and we had a kid's table set up outside to do a craft (put together a ship). The parents helped some and that allowed everyone who was running behind join the rest of the group. Then we had the kids put their ships in the baby pool and walk the plank. After that they were free to run around and play on the water slide. The activities were very short and simple and I think it allow some the kids who didn't know each other warm up to the rest of the group.

  • We had a bounce house and water table. The kids just kind of ran crazy to what ever they wanted.
  • I usually always have an activity for the party if there are bigger kids there. But if I am having the party at an event place then usually no. For ex. Allison's party this year is at GAA and I will not have an activity for the older kids. Another reason is that we are not inviting as many kids this year and sticking to just her close school friends. Her brother will be bringing a friend and between the two of them they will have fun by themselves.

If the party is at a park or our house then I usually have an activity planned for the kids.

  • I do, but that's why I don't do them at home after the first birthday, because I don't personally want to be commandeering 20 3-year olds (well I guess we did Ethan's 2nd birthday party here, but it was more of a family and friends getting together, the kids played on the playset and with all our outside toys).  Jack's 3rd birthday party was at the fire station, so they did a tour and got to sit on the trucks as the activity.

  • I rented a bounce house for Colin's party a few weeks ago. It was great b/c we had kids ranging in age. They LOVED it and the parents didn't have to run around chasing the kids like lunatics either. I thought it was the best babysitter b/c we knew where everyone was and could monitor accordingly. I also did a pinata and that was the extent of our activities.

  • Bouncy houses seem to always be a hit.

For our last party, for kids of multiple ages, I set up a crafts table that they could go to whenever they wanted.  I had favor boxes to decorate, with different, stickers, crayons, markers, etc.  Then a bowlful of candy they could put in the boxes to take home.  It was a hit and kids of all ages could play.

For Kate's three-year birthday, we had a coloring activity, a balloon drop (big hit with the kids--I wasn't sure how it would go over), and then a water-balloon toss game outside. But they also could just play, too. For her birthday this year (4th), we had girly activities (decorate crowns ordered from Oriental Trading, princess/barbie tatoos, and finger-nail painting), but they weren't the type of things that everyone did at the same time--the girls could do them whenever and in whatever order or skip it, etc. Then there was a reading of the book Pinkalicious that most everyone sat down to hear.
