Any moms on or going on Short Term Diability in Canada ?

How does it work with maternity EI  ? has your employer been supportive of this? Are there specific reasons that are accepted for STD ? Ive been extremely uncomfortable and up all night with a toddler. im hoping to go on it for at least 3 weeks until due date

It depends on your insurance through work! We have 15 weeks of sick leave and basically if you're on sick leave, your maternity leave starts the day baby is born.

To be safe, I'm starting my mat leave 3 weeks before my due date (you can start it 17 weeks before you're due but obviously that cuts into your year) because I know I'll be so uncomfortable by then, and if I happen to go on sick leave then my mat leave won't start until I'm due. baby is born.

  • I have been on short term disability since end of July. My work is covering my disability so I'm not going through EI for it. My maternity leave will start the day baby is born and short term disability will stop. I will not need to do the 2 week wait period. Because work pays for short term I will still continue to collect insurable hours toward my EI claim.
