What's your ultrasound schedule?

I'm at a new OB practice from last time since we moved out of state. I had an ultrasound today at 6 weeks (all looked good so far) due to having multiple losses before. My OB said my next ultrasound is the anatomy scan at 18-20 weeks! That seems crazy to me. My last OB always had one around 10 to 12 weeks. What does your OB usually do? I can't imagine going so long without another check considering how early I am now.

Re: What's your ultrasound schedule?

  • Mine does a transvaginal u/s at around 8 weeks and the anatomy scan at 18-20 weeks, nothing else for a normal pregnancy. I'm high risk due to multiple factors and will most likely have monthly scans with perinatal as well. (That was the case with DS2).

    11.2011 - DS1

    02.2013 - loss at 6 wks

    06.2014 - DS2

    10.2015 - loss at 12 wks

    03.2017 - DD

  • For #1, I had no history of loss, was young, etc, but they did a US at 6 weeks and 10 weeks (would normally have been more like 12 but we got it in at 10) and then the anatomy scan at 20 weeks.

For #2 (midwife practice), they just did the anatomy scan, though I also opted for one of those screenings (for Down's syndrome and maybe some other stuff) that gets an ultrasound earlier, which was 13 weeks.

Now I'm old, but I expect that I can look forward to just the anatomy scan again unless I opt in to additional screening like the one I did last time. I do wonder if they'll recommend something like that, though, given that now I'm 35+.

  • With DS, I had a transvaginal ultrasound at 8 weeks, a 'regular' ultrasound at 12 weeks, and the anatomy scan at 20 weeks. I guess those were the typical ones at my office, but I ended up having another one around the beginning of the 3rd trimester to make sure a small issue they had seen had resolved itself and a very quick one around 39 weeks to make sure he wasn't breech.

My practice offers a dating ultrasound around 8-9 weeks and the anatomy scan at 20 weeks.  If you choose, you can also do the NT scan (I believe around 12 weeks) as part of a screen for chromosomal abnormalities.

That said, I'm only having the anatomy scan.  Once the baby is big enough (probably by your 12 week appt) they'll check the heartbeat with doppler at every appointment and that's really all you need to make sure baby is doing well along with the anatomy scan unless you're high risk and/or have some specific need for one.

  • Mine does transvaginal at 8 wks, ultrasound at 12 & 20 weeks. Last pregnancy I had one in 3rd tri as well.

  • No need (for low risk pregnancy) to do any ultrasounds, but dating u/s in the first trimester can be incredibly useful to clarify EDD and make sure no one is induced too early / late, and anatomy scan around 20 wks is helpful especially to identify placenta previa. Seeing our babies can make us feel better or more nervous (or both) but there is really no evidence-based medical need beyond that mentioned above.

  • Depends on which tests you opt for. With DD1 I didn't have ANY ultrasounds until the a/s. Pregnancy was going smoothly, I knew my dates, and after the a/s showed she was healthy I didn't have any more until right at the end and they were just quick ones to make sure she was head down and ready to come out.

With DS I had a dating ultrasound just to be sure and then nothing until the anatomy scan. Once the anatomy scan was irregular I had ALL the ultrasounds. 4 more anatomy scans, level II u/s, and then weekly ones until he was born (he was born with a heart condition and a syndrome).

With DD2 I was followed by high risk because of everything with DS. I was given a dating ultrasound and then I opted for the NT scan so got another one around 12-14 weeks. Then the anatomy scan and I also got in office ultrasounds at every appt.

Technically, if your baby is healthy, your pregnancy is healthy, and you opt out of any optional tests, then you will only have the a/s.

  • With DD I had a dating ultrasound since I had absolutely no idea when I conceived (no period for 2 months after going off the pills) and that was at about 8 weeks. I had two more after, at 20 weeks for the anatomy scan and 36 weeks to confirm she was head down. I'm in a new state at a private practice so I have no idea what to expect with this one

  • The first at 7-8 weeks. Then if you choose additional testing ie neuchal translucency scan about 13 weeks. And then anatomy 18-20 and a final scan closer to 37.

  • I would ask for another between 8-10 weeks. !!Especially!!.. with history of loss. Thats crazy, youre anxiety will be through the roof. And I would tell them that and that it would make you feel 100% better with one more in between. They should be willing to do so to ease your mind and worry. There is no way I would be able to go from 6 to 18.
  • I am being monitored by a Maternal Fetal Medicine doctor in addition to my OB, so I end up with some extra ultrasounds, but they do them standard at all of my OB visits up until the last trimester. They really aren't necessary, but I think it's more for peace of mind and I'm not complaining...

  • Transvag at 8 weeks for dating and heartbeat confirmation. NT scan at 10 to 12 weeks and then anatomy scan at 18 to 20- non high risk no losses pregnancy
  • I'm still with an RE so I get US weekly from 5-12 weeks an extra one with the OB around 8 weeks and then the NT scan around 12 weeks anatomy scan around 20 weeks and I am going to request a fetal echo this time since my son was born with a murmur.  I am high risk so it is possible for me to have additional scans too.

  • I have my dating ultrasound next week. According to LMP I'll be 6 weeks 3 days. I think they scheduled it early cause my HCG was really high at 5 weeks. Usually they wait until 8 weeks. Then I'll have my anatomy scan at 19 or 20 weeks. We may do an extra ultrasound to determine gender at 14 weeks cause DH gets impatient.
  • My first one is for about ten weeks, there is an optional ultrasound at 16 weeks, and then a third at 20 weeks.

First time I had one around 6 weeks because we didn't know how far along I was (PCOS with super irregular cycles), the NT at 12 weeks, anatomy scan at 18 which showed a previa so I had another at 28 weeks otherwise I would have been done after the AS

This time my first appointment isn't even until 12 weeks so I assume they will do my NT at the same time as my dating. And then my anatomy scan should be the last.

  • My ob does one the first visit and then one at 18, when I had my daughter and was high risk they made me have one every week after 18 weeks. I ended up delivering 6 weeks early!

  • With DS, I had 3, at 9 wks, at 12 wks, and at 20 wks. With DD, I lucked out... I got one at 6 wks, one at 8 wks, one at 12 wks, one at 20 wks, and then I changed providers and got a late one at 32 wks, which I wasn't expecting. I'm now with that same provider so I still don't know what they'll be doing this time around but my first one is at 8 wks. Two u/s sounds like not enough, yet I've heard of providers who do that... I wonder if you asked for an NT scan if they would give it, since it is for further testing.

Yeah, I think my last OB was incredibly awesome because she had been with my through all the losses and really knew me as a person. If I had a question either she or her nurse would get back to me almost immediately. At this practice, I've seen 2 OB's who have been great. The one at this appointment was genuinely horrible. He was pretty condescending when he spoke to me and DH was furious. I would have been more vocal to the OB about my concerns but by that point I was trying not to cry and I just wanted to get out and never see him again. I go back to one of the good OB's for the 10 week appointment so I'll ask then.

  • This will be my third OB in the third different state! And they have all been pretty close to the same schedule.

The OB here won't even schedule our first appointment until 10 weeks, and we will have a dating ultrasound at that point. Then the anatomy at 20 weeks will be the last.

DD1 was a dating ultrasound around 6 weeks, and anatomy scan at 20 weeks.

DD2 was a dating ultrasound around 8 weeks, anatomy scan at 18 weeks. And an unexpected late ultrasound at 32 weeks only because I was measuring small.

  • The A/S at 18-20 weeks will be all unless there's a problem at the A/S and then I'll have more.  So, I hope it's just the one.  And that's the norm here.  Even with 3 losses already this year I won't get more. It never occurred to me that would be considered considered crazy.

  • My personal one is
6 weeks - dating scan/ER (sudden bleeding SCH)
7 weeks - growth scan + check SCH
    12 weeks - NT
    20 weeks - AS
34 weeks - growth scan (not guaranteed)

my doctor in general only ever guarantees the AS, and the NT if you opt for it, but I have the extras due to the recent bleed and previous loss.
