Sciatica

Hi I'm 36 weeks and have severe sciatica. It's so painful affecting my day to day life I'm in constant pain. I'm not due to see the midwife until a week from today. Has anyone else suffered with this and can recommend anything to ease the pain or tell what the midwife will do if anything? Thanks in advance

Re: Sciatica

  • Unfortunately there's not much that can be done. I have sciatica (pre-pregnancy from a slipped disk) and nothing really helps. Just try resting it as much as you can. I mentioned it to my OB at my first visit and she said you can try going on all fours on the floor for about 30 min a day. It will help take the weight of your belly off of the nerve. But the pain will come back after a while unfortunately. You can try a heating pad but usually it doesn't do anything because the sciatic nerve is located too deep in the body. It might help relax the muscles surrounding it though. Good luck

  • I had severe sciatica with my last pregnancy for about a month around 33-35 weeks (to the point I was on crutches).  My OB recommended a guy who was a combo chiropractor and physical therapist.  With that treatment my sciatica went away.  Also use Ice or Heat, and massage will give temporary relief.  I've made it past that point in this pregnancy without suffering from sciatica!  My best guess is that is is because of a mixture of starting chiropractic care early on plus not wearing shoes that I now think contributed to the sciatica last time.  Make sure you are wearing comfortable, supportive shoes!
  • Acupuncture worked for me with my first baby. Haven't had an issue since.

  • I had it with this pregnancy and it was severe. I went to a chiropractor under my midwife's advisement and found one that specializes in pregnant women. A quick Google search might yield some results for your area. It took about 3-4 visits and then the pain was gone. I go back every other week or every week in order to make sure everything is still aligned properly but have had very little to no pain in between, which is a huge difference from what I was going through. I highly recommend one.

  • I will echo the suggestions above. Search for stretches for sciatic and/or pirformis syndrome and try some of those (if your belly allows ... I am having trouble with some of them now!) ... One of my favorite things to do is take a small, hard ball (baseball or massage ball ... I actually use one of my dog's toys that's super tough), and sit on it, then roll/press right into the affected area. My pain is usually deep in my butt cheek, so the hard ball is the only thing that's effective to dig in there.
