Weight gain

Ok i just went for my 22 week appointment.  I weighed 236 at the beginning of my pregnancy.  I know overweight to begin with. I got told by OB today that I need to watch my weight gain. I weigh 248 today. Is that bad? I thought I was supposed to gain weight. This is first pregnancy.

Re: Weight gain

  • If your doctor said you needed to watch it then they are concerned. Listen to the advice of your doctor and do your best to gain within the guidelines they are giving you.

When you start a pregnancy out overweight, standard advice is to gain between 10-20 lbs total. Being halfway and at 12 lbs is probably why he/she said something. Pregnancy is not a reason for uncontrolled and endless weight gain. Being told to monitor your future weight gain doesn't mean what's already happen is "bad" per say.

That being said, everybody is different. Our experiences with weight gain really can't determine if yours is concerning or not. I'd call your doctor and ask for more information if you're confused about what they said, you might even get a nutritionist referral or extra help out of it.

  •  I started at 215 and I am almost 20 weeks now and just hit 219. My doc said he wants me to gain a maximum of 10-15 lbs. I'm trying to be as healthy as possible and not gain much since I already had more than I wanted to begin with. I just got diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes so even more reason not to gain too much! Good luck mama!
  • There is a certain amount they recommend you gain during pregnancy. If your doc is concerned, you should try your best to gain within those guidelines. Of course, that doesn't mean dieting or trying to lose weight. They just want you to slow it down. I had that happen with my last pregnancy. For me, it really meant cutting down on the "I'm eating for 2, so I'm indulging" type of snacks/food. I ended up having to stick to healthier snacks and food and curb a lot of my indulgence eating.
  • Gotcha.  I understand  that they are looking out for me and the baby. I have the glucose test in 4 weeks. I am going to try and make sure I am eating healthy and back on track.

It really depends.  I've experience doctors who only want to talk about my weight.  Then I have others doctors say it's not a concern because, besides having a higher BMI than recommended, I'm more healthy than most people. I eat relatively healthy (except lately, baby wants sweets) and I kept to a workout routine that surprised most.  So many people see overweight people only as objects of failing health and concern - that's not always the case.

i lost 25 pounds by the 2nd trimester this baby, I had one lady Doctor (mine didn't have an opening) not want to even talk about it because she said it's healthy that I'm losing weight, didn't want to test me for anything, patted me on the head to my malnutrition concerns; she also kept asking if I was able to give birth naturally last time around and was dwelling way too much on if I had any health problems with my last baby and how she would monitor me closely for potentially weight related issues down the line.  My regular doctor gave me extra tests, blood and urine, (I was dehydrated, malnourished and having associated low pressure and heart palpitations, ended up in the ER because my blood pressure readings at home were in the 80s).  He monitored me very closely from the beginning (before any ER visit because of my past Hyperemesis history) and when I started gaining weight, he told me it was a good thing and said nothing more about it.

all that to say, don't completely dismiss doctors concerns but know what one doctor says may be complete opposite of what another doctor says.

  • Keeping your weight under control will make delivery or csection easier on you. It also makes it easier to lose the weight afterwards since it really is only baby weight if you only gain 15 pounds or so. I gained about 20 pounds with my first, and it was gone as soon as the swelling went down from surgery. This one is a different story. My weight seems to be out of control this time, though I'm not eating any differently than last time. I'm also still nauseous and throwing up a couple of times a week. I want to gain as little as possible, but have packed on about 18 so far. Ugh.
  • This is my second baby. I am also plus sized to begin with- I started at 221 and today at my 22 week check in I was 249!  Somehow I only gained about 30 pounds with my first one. I have had a lot of stress etc to deal with this time around but am hoping my weight gain slows down. My doctor didn't mention it being an issue though.
  • I am no help as my last pregnancy i started at 142 and when i went into labor was 207. I lost 40 lbs in 8 weeks. I had a TON of water weigt and swelling. Same weight this time when i got pregnant again, 143, and im 23 weeks and now 174. Im hoping not to gain 65 again, but im trying not to stress about it because Ive been through this before. I would still trust yoir doctor though. Some are more weight oriented while mine never said one peep about weight. It always confuses me how doctoes differ so much on this subject.
