Failed glucose test

hey everyone. So I got the results from my dr this morning and I failed my test. I was at 145 and they want it under 135. I'm freaking out. I have to go back tomorrow for the 3 hour test. Has anyone failed first and then pass the second time?? I fasted too prior to the test because I didn't want my breakfast to throw it off too. Ughhhhhhh I'm so upset.

Re: Failed glucose test

  • With my first DD, I failed my first glucose test. I think it was at like 139 or something (it was 10 yrs ago...) Then I took the second one and passed, not by a lot, but a pass is a pass.
I didn't have gd with DD2, and will be taking my glucose test tomorrow  for this pregnancy  I'm about 20 lbs heavier this pregnancy compared to the last 2 though. I'm not sure if that's going to help.
Im planning on having a healthy dinner, and a healthy low-sugar, low-carb breakfast. Idk if that will make a difference, but even a couple points can help!

  • I just posted in appointments- but I failed the 1 hour last time with similar results to yours, passed the 3 hour just fine. I left my "failed" test pretty much in tears- so upsetting! There's nothing you should have done or can do if you have it- not your fault at all. Hugs. Time will make you feel better about it

  • Yes! I have griped about it in TW Tuesday and WTF Wednesday! My doctor only does 2 hour tests, which I failed spectacurily! So I was diagnosed with GD.  I didn't take the 3 hour so I can't comment on that but I believe @cayaylonglegs did- so you might want to ask her.

As far as being upset, I can completely understand how you feel but like @toller said, if you have it, it's not your fault.  And really the testing part isn't that bad.  I think the worst thing about it to me is the diet change or restrictions.

Hang in there.  Take the 3 hour and go from there.  If you have it, it's such a short season of change and taking care of it now will ultimately help you in the labor process (not as big of a baby) according to Dr. Google!

  • I failed my 1 hour on Friday and had my 3 hour today. I hope things turn out well for you. My doctor had me eat normal before my first one and I think the orange juice may have been what put me over. I scored 157 =\ here's hoping I get better results from today.

Dont stress too much just keep eating healthy as possible.

  • If any of you have yet to take your 1 hr, eat protein before. Like bacon, eggs, and water for breakfast. Protein helps to keep your sugars level and prevent spikes and drops. Also if you have any questions and can't get ahold of your doc, shoot me a message. I have an aunt with type 1, and because I'm ~285lbs I had to do the 4 tests a day from 8w until yesterday.

  • Crossing crossing my fingers for you all.  This is the second time I've had GD.  As PP said, it isn't the end of the world once you get used to the restrictions.  But it's understandable to be upset, as it can mean more monitoring and can affect how and when you deliver.  Something I have to remind myself is that it isn't my fault, but I can take steps to help keep this babe healthy,  and in the grand scheme it is a small sacrifice and a short period of time.  :)
  • Good luck tomorrow!  It's definitely possible to pass the three hour :)
  • Thank you ladies. I appreciate it. I called back my doctors and they were so fantastic. I pretty much cried and said I don't care about me I just want the baby to be healthy which I know all the mamas here feel too. They repeated what everyone said here and that's you can't help it it's how your body reacts to the pregnancy. If I do have it then I just have to take the proper precautions to maintain a healthy balance.

Good luck @cayaylonglegs and keep us updated!!

@kate08young I think your point is great. I haven't done my test yet (probably in the next 2.5 weeks or so), but from knowing people with diabetes, I do think fasting can cause spikes. So if you're not told to fast, I would eat protein in the morning. That's my plan at least!
  • I think it's so interesting how offices have such different procedures for this. My office only does them in the morning, saying its more accurate? I can have water in the morning and one egg or 9 almonds. They were very specific.
  • Thanks for the tips on this! My appointment for the test is in the afternoon and the doc told me to eat normally. I'm definitely going to eat a bit better than normal :)

Good of luck with your re-tests!
  • Failed with DD years ago (not by much). Passed the 3 hour one.

  • I failed mine too... my reading came back at 143 and they want me under 130.  I have to go for my 3 hour test on Saturday.  Mine was basically a fasting result because I wasn't allowed to have anything 2 hours prior to drinking my glucola but my appointment was at 9:15 in the morning, so I didn't eat beforehand, because I had the glucola at 8am.  I was instructed by my MD office to up my carb intake this week, so we'll see if that makes a difference!  Fingers crossed this one comes back okay!

  • Found out I failed my 1 hour this morning. My reading was 170 so significantly higher than where it was supposed to be but I ate normally before my test so that might have affected it.  I take my three hour tomorrow at 8. They said to fast after midnight but I've heard to fast for 12 hours before hand?

At my doctors now. Just drank that orange devil drink. My doctor told me yesterday I could have dinner but can't eat after midnight. Hope that helps @kbduke

Edited. Also told me not to eat rice the night before!

  • I was told to fast 12 hours before my 2 hour test as well, which I wonder if it caused a more of a spike than normal for me.  Because I failed, I've been monitoring my sugars for 2 days and they all (with the 1 exception) seem to be within the normal range (keeping fingers crossed that it continues).

The monitoring part really isn't a huge deal, the diet change I think will be a bit harder but overall it's not been a massive change, I'm just staying away from sweets, which is a HUGE problem for me.  If it's sweet, I want to eat it.

Good luck everyone with your tests!!

  • Ehh, 154... Moving onto 3 hour test next week.

  • Yes, I failed the 1hr and was as upset as you. I did the 3 HR one and passed. Just be ready to feel very crappy afterwards. Follow all the instructions they give you. Like PPs said, don't beat yourself up too much, there is nothing you could have done differently and it is good that they are being thorough for the health of your baby.

  • I don't have my test until the 20th, and am already freaking out. I decided to just take the day off, since I have another U/S scheduled at 11:45, and then do the test at 1:10, followed by my monthly check up. I have read that eating protein that day, will help more... so that is my plan. I love all things salty and sugary... so I don't know how it will come out. My OB didn't really explain what they do, nor did I ask (my own fault), but I guess I'd drink it at 1:10 and go to my appointment and get the blood draw (or whatever they do) afterwards? No idea. I should ask someone whose been at the same hospital.

If I fail and have to do the 3-hour, I plan just to take that day off too. I was going to use the rest of my vacation for more time off before baby comes, but can't due to stuff we have going on in November at work where it's 'all hands on deck'... so I need days to take anyway. I'd rather not go in for a bit, leave, and then come back (or work from home) afterwards... I hate blood draws.

  • @Kacie209 for my 1 hr, I checked in for my regular app. Had 5 minutes to drink the glucola, then my nurse and I both set a ~50 minute timer, and I went on my ref appointment. When the timer went off, my nurse walked me to the 'lab' room and I had my draw at the appropriate time, then went back and finished my regular appointment.

  • I had my glucose test 2 weeks ago and my OB said that 50% of women who take the 3 hour glucose test pass it.
  • For my first pregnancy I fasted before the 1 hour test and passed by only 1 point. For this pregnancy I ate two eggs with water about 2 hours before my appointment and got an 82 I think? Anyway, I think when you fast you really throw off your number because your body goes crazy having to metabolize that sugary drink with nothing in your stomach. I hope you passed the 3 hour!
  • @sammyl1221 - I failed. I don't know my actual numbers yet but my Drs office said the diabetic nurse and dietician would call me next week.

I'm really disappointed in myself even though I know it's something I can't really control.

  • I am Sorry @cayaylonglegs!!!! There is nothing you can do. It's how your body reacts to pregnancy. when my doctor explained that to me it just clicked. Every body is different and can handle things differently....glucose being one of them. I know with monitoring and eating well you'll be able to handle it!  <3

  • :( sorry @cayaylonglegs I have been crossing my fingers for everyone!
Just took my test today, almost didn't make it because of construction in my neighborhood!! I was totally speeding on the freeway... Until I saw a state trooper!
I ate eggs for breakfast, hoping the protein helps.
My 1 hr test instructions were: eat breakfast, wait 2 hrs, drink disgusting glucose w/in 5-10 min (try not to vomit), then have blood drawn exactly 1 hr from finishing drink.
Then go eat junk food. (Ef it, I just drank glucose, can't be much worse)
My baby was freaking out when I drank that stuff!

  • I had an argument with DH right before my appointment and was so angry I absent mindedly ate a bunch of chocolate mint cookies that I had stashed in my car on the way there.  (I know, not a healthy coping mechanism)

    My hopes aren't high.
  • Awe @cayaylonglegs sorry to hear this! I am mentally preparing myself to be in the same boat as you. I'm sitting at the hospital now doing my 3 hour test, drink was awful and fingers crossed for good results but I'm just not feeling optimistic! The good thing is we're all getting close to the end!!

@mforinger I'm at the doctor office for my 3 hour too. That 100g glucose drink was no joke. It took everything in me not to throw up. FX for good results!
  • @kbduke you're not kidding it was so gross!! I had trouble getting it down and the lab lady stood there and watched me drink it. Like can I have my 5 min of suffering alone please?! Ahh here's to good results for both of us, best of luck!
  • @cayaylonglegs I'm sorry to hear that! I hope it's easy enough to manage.

I failed the one hour one when pregnant with DD1. I like to blame the receptionist that I asked at my prior appointment "is my glucose test next time?" And she said "no!" So I ate all the bad food all day and then went in at 3:00...surprise surprise, I failed. I passed the three hour one with flying colors. It wasn't much fun, but worth it I suppose. This time I know my test is at my next appointment. I was told to not fast, and to eat protein and avoid carbs.

Good luck to everyone going through testing!
