September Plus Size Mammas topics (edited)

edited September 2016 in February 2017 Moms
We've decided to make this a monthly thread, for now.  Feel free to talk about anything plus size related, or not.  The only rule is we show respect to everybody.
The below format is optional. Thank you!

1. How far along are you?

2. How are you feeling?

3. Rants/Raves

4. What is the one thing you are looking forward to about fall?

Re: September Plus Size Mammas topics (edited)

  • 17 weeks today

I'm feeling physically like crap, still no energy and all the same symptoms from first tri including new ones. Mentally pretty anxious because I always feel guilty about never being productive enough.

2 rants! One being that I feel like I'm walking around in a frigin fat suit. I really feel trapped in my own skin. It's like this isn't my body and I forget sometimes, then I pass by my own reflection and I'm like wtf?! I know I'm in there somewhere lol
my other one is that I'm not liking how I started feeling consistent movement from the baby a couple weeks ago and it's pretty much been nothing since, not cool
I guess I have one rave and that its DS is starting school tomorrow!

oh man I look forward to everything about fall! I love it and enjoy everything about it. The cooler weather, apple picking, pumpkins, Halloween, comfier clothes, the beautiful foliage, etc.

  • Hi all,  I have a quick question for folks on this thread. We're not seeing a ton of participation and I'm wondering if a conversation abt what kind of support ppl want from this check in may help that? rn I personally feel like we're sharing the same information here that we would on a symptoms thread -- and I'd rather participate in that because there are more ppl and responses.

TL/DR: What are we hoping to accomplish with this thread? What kind of support would help others here?
  • I totally agree @Gretchypoo. When I first asked about it people seemed very interested.  So I started it. MY issue is that after starting it, I no longer feel like I fit in. I'm slightly overweight but not that much.  And some of the issues that ladies have brought up in this thread, I really had no advice or information to offer them.  So that's why I've just been creating the thread every week because people had shown interest... but this is why I haven't been actually participating though.

  • @AfKash I'm plus sized but I'm having no issues-- totally normal pregnancy. so I guess I'm wondering if/how we make this a thread ppl want to participate in.
  • I'm a plus size mama but haven't been participating in this thread. With the how far along etc etc it just seemed just like our weekly ticked change check ins and symptoms one so was a little over kill for me. And honestly I feel like any questions I have if something came up people are around in randoms/symptoms etc and I could just ask there and get more responses then here.

Also, for specific things like maternity clothes fitting plus size etc since we have specific threads for those things I just look there.

Not sure if that helps at all- just kind of explaining why I don't post in here generally. I do look just in case someone has a question as this is my third plus size pregnancy. But generally it seems questions are directed elsewhere.

  • Well, I'm totally up for suggestions. If you guys have any ideas please let me know. Or if you think this thread is unnecessary, please let me know that, too. I don't mind either way.

  • I dont know if i have ideaa yet but appreciate having this conversation!
  • Hmmm, now that you bring it up @Gretchypoo I do wonder what we get out of the thread that we can't in other threads.  I guess I originally really liked the idea as a way to share concerns about our pregnancies or even trivial things like man I wish I could participate in the HDBD thread but I'm definitely not showing.  But at the same time, I don't know if that deserves it's own thread.  And with concerns/symptoms they can probably addressed in other regular threads.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Maybe it doesn't have to be a weekly thing? Like a monthly or something that doesn't do like the symptoms etc. more just like an open forum for if any things been brought up by dr as a concern, showing, feeling comfortable in your body etc? I'm not really sure.

I'm plus sized and have been mocked and judged on other bump threads in other bump boards so I found plussizebirth.com as my solace. But if we can make this work, I'm game. I regularly use thebump as my go-to resource.

My problem is finding a coat in my size. I'm a 4x pre-pregnancy and my 3x and 5x coats won't zip up. Any suggestions and /or ideas?

I'm so sorry you were mocked in other places. I hope you haven't seen that here. I have no advice bc I hate coats-- I can never find one that fits in my size and doesn't make me look like the Michelin man. So I have 2 vests that I wear with henleys, flannel and sweaters. But I'm in the middle of the country and it won't get cold cold here.

    Anyone have any ideas?
  • Thanks for all the great input everyone! So I think I'll make this a monthly thread and we can post as needed. Btw, I'm sorry I didn't make this clear, but the format/Questions I ask at the beginning of the thread are just a suggestion to get the conversation started.  Of course we can talk about anything else.  I should have made that clear. Sorry, again.

@svveetie413 Have you tried zulilly.com ? They have plus size maternity winter coats. I'm not sure if they have them in your size specifically but you could check.  I'll continue to keep an eye out for you, in the meantime.

  • For me, I'm looking forward to this thread later on. I'm worried about pre-e, GD, and preterm labor. So I'll be looking to any STM/STM+ that have experience with that.

But for the time being, I kind of like being able to talk about how shitty I feel some days and have a group that actually gets what I'm talking about. Sometimes it's nice to have my feelings validated with someone else's empathy rather than someone else's sympathy.

I will probably check in to this thread on my bad days or the days when I feel especially insecure or to offer a "that really sucks and I get you" post in support. So I like the idea of keeping this monthly :)
  • I had GD with my son (3 years ago) and likely will again (so far tests good, but it's like a 90% chance). I'd be happy to share any info or answer questions, however I expect we will see a lot of people (over weight, under weight or not) with GD DX after the 24 week mark.

In regard to GD, I'd try not to worry now. if you get it, you'll have appts with specialists, nutritionists, counselors, etc. follow their directions, take it seriously.

Many, many people have healthy babies with GD.

  • I forgot to post earlier this week. I like having a thread to talk about pregnancy related things with other plus-size women. I'm just so uncomfortable with my body lately that I just haven't talked much.

I have an extra paunch above my bump that is super emphasized by some pregnancy tops. It was embarrassing for me, despite just being around family. Pre-pregnancy, my pants usually sat right under this paunch. I've been wearing drawstring/elastic waist capris for a few months and I know I'll have to start with maternity jeans when the weather cools, but I don't really want to wear pants above my paunch and have my waist band and bra touch.

I am okay with whatever we do, I think one of the great things about this baby month board is no one is judging anyone for body type or size, just generally judging people being jerks, lol.

@purplewriter, this is baby #4, and I totally have twin skin and a pouch from previous pregnancies.  I am honestly not quite sure even where the baby is in there.   I have found with full panel pants that they kind of scoop the whole thing up and make it look more like a round pregnant belly.  Tighter stretchy demi bands hit right in the middle of the pudge and make it go up and down at the same time.

I just ordered some plus sized jeans from Kohls, with full panels and I am really hoping that they fit.  Nothing in the store is the right size.   I have one pair right now I found secondhand, but they are so long!   I might have to get them hemmed.

  • svveetie413 I'm sorry you had a bad experience in other threads.  I think the great thing about this board from what I've seen is that no one is judgy about what you look like.  As for the coat, I'm no help.  I have a coat that was too big for me last winter and I'm hoping I can get away with using it this winter.  It was a puffer coat I got from Lane Bryant.  Maybe check out some plus size stores to see if you can get a coat that's too big now but you can grow in to?

I ordered a bunch of maternity clothes from Walmart of all places.  Their skinny maternity jeans looked cute online and were only $10 but when they came they were too baggy in the wrong places so now I have to return them.  I ordered a pair from Old Navy to check them out but I may have to check out Kohls.

So I do have a question for the second time plus size mammas.  At my last appointment my OB suggested when I come to the next appointment I do the test for GD.  She said it's early but if I fail I'll know.  But if I pass I'll still have to take it again down the line to be sure it doesn't develop.  I almost feel like she's just assuming I'll fail because I'm overweight.  I'm just wondering when others took the test and do you think it's worth it to do it early and possibly have to do it again?
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @CurlyCupcake21 with my first pregnancy the dr just made me take the test at the normal beginning of third trimester time. With my last pregnancy(baby2) I had different Drs/lived somewhere else and they pushed me to do the gd test early as well. I felt the same as you it was like because I was overweight they assumed I'd have GD even though I hadn't had it last time. They kind of acted shocked when my numbers were fine and were like well we'll see at your next test.
I get the idea of checking early. Better to know as soon as possible to help avoid issues Etc. but the attitude was annoying to me and made me feel bad.

  • I had an early glucose test too. No one called me with the results so I assume all was okay. I know I'll have to do the test again later.

FTM here, I am 16wks and at my 19 wk appt I'll have to do the test for GD too. My midwife was honest about the fact that the only reason I'm getting tested twice is bc of my BMI. I'll also be tested in 3rd trimester with the rest of their patients.
  • Hmmm, I just don't know what to do.  I mean the OB said I could wait but it would be better to know early so I could get a nutrition plan in place.  The thing is that I already have an appointment with a nutritionist in about a month anyway.  I feel like because I'm overweight that the nutritionist will probably talk about a similar diet as if I have GD.  But who knows.  Maybe it would be good to just get it done.

  • @CurlyCupcake21 I'm jelly you could get pants at old navy. when I looked online they only went up to an 18 in maternity, that's not big enough for me. Motherhood Maternity is SO EXPENSIVE. So I'm looking at Macy's but hoping I can just fake it for a while... but I only have 3 pairs of pants that fit anymore :-(
  • @Gretchypoo I'm really hoping they'll fit.  I was down to an 18 before I got pregnant but now they're pretty tight (especially by the end of the day) so I'm hoping an 18 in maternity will fit.  I really wish the Walmart pants worked out because they were so cheap...but I guess that's why they were so weird fitting.  If the ON ones don't fit I'm going to have to bite the bullet and buy some expensive ones.  Although I'm also hoping to wear a lot of leggings! :)

  • Maternity pants wise I got the 1x from Walmart and liked them and liked they were cheap! Also check online at kohls especially because you can use coupons!
I do really like the motherhood maternity but they are pricey for me. But I found someone on one of our local fb resale pages that was selling some for cheap. I got a dress, three pants, a Capri, and like 10 shirts for like $30 from her. So maybe check around on those kind of places!

  • I ended up getting five pairs of pants at Maternity Motherhood two weekends ago because my bump suddenly popped and I couldn't make it another week w/o something to wear to work.  I really like the Jessica Simpson jeans and they were buy one get on 50% off.  Plus, two of the other pants were on sale for end of season (they are capris that convert into ankle length); they'll probably get me through October if it's still warm enough.  Hoping I can get a few online orders for winter stuff in before I'm stuck again.

  • I live in MO and it's not cold here until November, and it's not REALLY cold until January-- sometimes February... so I'm hoping to fake it with some jeans ;-)

Old Navy tops look good and they had a 50% off deal this weekend :-)
  • Re Clothes:
I've done really well with Old Navy! I have a ton of returns to mail back. Some of there styles of the size 18 jeans were very loose, and some were tighter. I have a size 16 arriving tomorrow to see if it's a bit more flattering. I just want one pair lol!
    The shirts are awesome though!!

With my ON cash I purchased a men's coat, I guessed on the size, so it might be a total fail!

I also tried Walmart and the jeans looked awful on me!!

  • I have PCOS so I'm at an increased risk of GD. I was tested early when I was Pg with my daughter and ended up with it early and was on insulin before bed for 2/3 of my pregnancy. I won't lie it sucked but it wasn't the end of the world. I even ended up losing weight while pregnant.

My daughter was a perfectly average 7lbs 9ozs with no health concerns aside from an unrelated heart murmur. She did have to have her sugar tested every so often at the hospital after delivery.

I have already started to make changes to my diet and will have my GD test at 24 weeks. I'm hoping its negative, but know I have a huge chance of it being positive.

  • @kswiger06 I know I can't speak for others but I'd be happy to get input from anyone.  I'm up for any support and love the community on the board so to me even if someone doesn't fit in to plus size doesn't necessarily mean they can't have an opinion or suggestion about a topic we bring up.

  • @kswiger06 you are ALWAYS welcome here!!

  • Can I just complain for a second? I lost 40lbs and went from a 22 to a 12. I really thought it would help with this pregnancy. I've been more sick and achey this time than I ever was with DS.
  • @ladyoriza don't be disheartened!! You did a great job losing the weight! But the achines and sickness are attributable to the hormones not just weight.  Trust me.  You definitely helped you and your baby out from all that hard work! Congratulate yourself!!

  • Good for you @ladyoriza! I think being sick and achey is just part of being prego sometimes. It sounds like you're doing well trying to stay healthy for your littles, though!

I just really hope it at least helps with my blood pressure. I was borderline pre-e for most of my last pregnancy. The ob said that it could be weight related or it could be genetic. So we'll see.
  • I don't ever feel judged by people on this board for looks or anything and for that I'm very grateful. I'm fine with anyone jumping in that wants to. I hear you guys (the ones having a tough time finding clothes that fit right) which is why I stay out of the maternity clothes thread lol plus I hated shopping even when I was thin.

I didn't have GD, high BP or anything that could be weight related/possibly triggered by weight in either of my last pregnancies (also plus size/very overweight.) Both babies were also born with zero health issues whatsoever. I'm not saying that to be braggy AT ALL or to give false hope, I'm saying it to make people feel better that things might not necessarily go badly health wise just because you're overweight.

My BMI actually puts me in the obese range so I know I'm lucky and it's great to be health conscious especially during pregnancy, but it's also not an automatic death sentence. Now that I said that, I'm sure I just jinxed myself for this time but anyway lol I do have to get tested multiple times for GD but not only due to my weight but also because my mom is a diabetic so they're concerned about the family history. I don't blame those who feel bad that doctors are shocked when they don't have it because they're just assuming you will. I've been there! I'm also so sorry to the poster who mentioned being treated so poorly and judged for her weight. This board is not like that at all, these people are great.
  • Rave - My clothes from Kohls fit awesome!   I am 5'4, and usually wear an 18.  The jeans I got were both 1x.  They are so comfy!   I was squeezing myself like a sausage in everything I had from before.   I believe they go up to 3x in sizes.   The pants are a bit long, but they are great in butt, thighs, etc.

My blood sugar is always low, so regular timing on GD screening for me.  I actually think I have less body issues when pregnant, you are supposed to look this way growing a baby.   My belly starts making my butt look smaller and that makes me happy.

@kswiger06 , you and anyone else who could be sweet and helpful are welcome here!

  • @Partyof6? That is exactly me! I'm 5'4 inches. About an 18 although occasionally a 20 in some things. And I thought kohls maternity fit really well for me. And I love when I have an actual bump. I feel way better about myself with a bump/pregnant than in general. It just makes me feel good. My body is growing a baby!

  • @Partyof6? and @lct2008 you guys have inspired me to look at kohls! I'm a 22 so hopefully I could find something.

I'm the same way re:body issues. I'm thrilled! I feel like I am growing a baby and I'm happy
