  • @underthesea That is awesome!  I love the feathers; what a fun idea!  I'll have to take pics of the mobile I made last week.  They are a lot more work than they seem!

  • @ladysaceb that's really special! I wish I could make all that. You're daughter is going to look so sweet in your homemade creations.

Ok, crafty moms - looking for some input! DD still does not have a memory box.  SIL told me she was going to make one for us to use (not really what I wanted but she IS really talented so I decided to not fight that battle)... long story short, my daughter is just shy of 15 months and still no memory box. So I'm making one before new baby gets here and I can't keep their stuff straight.  I'll be making one for new baby, too.

Here's where I need advice.  The lazy, cheap part of me is leaning towards just getting a clear plastic tote box for each of them and calling it a day - it'll easily fit everything, will stand up to potential flooding in our basement, and will be easy to store and transfer when we eventually move into a permanent home.  But part of me wants to make something more special and unique.  Have any of you done or seen something cool that would work for memory boxes? I don't want to do anything too fancy, just something that might be a little more special than the lazy but practical approach.  Thanks in advance for any feedback!

@karaelaine1991 First, thank you for the reminder, I've been meaning to do something like this for my son who is 21 months and keep forgetting. Second, the plastic tote idea works great, but if you want to make it more unique, Michael's or other hobby type stores often carry boxes that are just plain white or brown. (I usually find these in with the canvas and art type stuff) Or you could even use a plain photo storage box. Then, depending on what you are looking for you can decorate it. Whether it's with pictures of them as a baby, things that are special to you, cards from baby showers, etc. Mod Podge is great for sticking things down and then doing a coat over everything once it's done to preserve it. The whole thing would be relatively inexpensive.

ETA: I was able to find a sample of what I was talking about on Hobby Lobby's site. Something bigger than this but you get the idea. Also - check out the scrap book section for paper and stickers if that interests you for décor. I don't write very pretty so I tend to use cool letter stickers when I need to write something in my crafting. https://www.hobbylobby.com/Scrapbook-Paper-Crafts/Mixed-Media/Paper-Mache/3-1-4-Paper-Mache-Rectangle-Box/p/23689

  • @karaelaine1991 I made one for DS when he was a few months old. I bought a cute shadow box frame from Michaels, they're usually always on sale! Inside I put his hospital bracelets, one of the hospital hats he wore, a picture from when he was first born and the hospital bracelets DH and I wore. It's pretty simple, but cute and I hung it in his room. He also has a clear plastic bin with other special things, and that just stays in his closet. It has his coming home outfit, baptism outfit, and other keepsakes we wanted to have for him, but didn't want to have a display for. I will probably do the same for the new baby.

This would be great, thank you! Have never used mod podge before, but I have heard of it... might be worth a try!

That's a cute idea, too! A friend put those items in a clear Christmas ball and hangs that on her tree every year - was going to try that but with holiday craziness, I never got around to it.  I like that with your idea, it's up all the time instead of just once a year!

  • @karaelaine1991 Coming from someone who quite literally lost all pictures and sentimental items when historical floods hit my town in the Florida Panhandle 2 years ago, I say keep them in a water tight tote if there's any possibility of them getting wet in your basement like you said. Maybe do something more decorative for your favorite pieces, but keep the majority of it safe.

I'm so sorry that happened to you! We just moved into our house in June. A few weeks ago, there was some flooding in our basement - I'm not sure how much, because we were actually on vacation, but it did damage some of our belongings, though nothing really important, thank goodness. Our landlords say it was the first time that's ever happened in the years that they've owned the house (apparently, the storm was really bad), but to be on the safe side, having something that is water resistant to some degree is important to me.  Plus, I don't know what the deal will be with the house we'll eventually buy, although DH is currently adamant that he won't buy a house with a history of flooding... he has lots of memories of having to stay up all night cleaning up his basement from floods when he was a kid.

Thank you! Yeah, she's really developing her own interests and tastes lately (she's 15 months) and it's been so fun to watch! She's super girly - loves tea parties and princesses  - but she's also all about tractors and Thomas the Tank Engine.  Too funny!
