Reviving this thread because recently FI has changed his mind and thinks that he DOES want to circumcise.
I've left the decision up to him but then I talked to my mom who let me know that the doctors messed up with my little brothers circumcision and left a jagged nub that had to be later removed. Thanks for scaring the crap outta me ma.
If we have a boy (Team Green) we will not be circumcising. I've read a lot of literature about it and consulted several pediatricians and it is not considered medically necessary and in fact, some say, it borders on genital mutilation (the way they do to women in other countries). My husband is circumcised and he agrees that we will not circumcise our son wholeheartedly-- agreeing that "boys don't have to look like their dads if we know better than previous generations did."
Interestingly enough, insurance does not cover it here because it is considered plastic surgery and the hospital told us that in our area (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, NC) 75% of families no longer circumcise.
Now, having said that, my mom did not circumcise my brother in 1993 and then when he was five he was wrestling with a cousin and a foot ended up in the wrong place and it ended up tearing (FREAK ACCIDENT) so he had to be circumcised due to the extent of the tear. So, there are some risks, but only in rare cases.
Another concern that people seem to have is cleanliness. Well, it's the same kind of cleanliness that women have on the insides of their vulva-- it's the same stuff, and we all know how to address that in ourselves-- so we can clearly make sure our boys know how to take care of themselves.
I have never known of people that wished they didn't have it done but have know people who wish they would have had it done. Not to mention to do it later in life is much more painful.

Take a stroll by the Brother K intactivist page. You'll find lots who are upset they were circ'd as babies.
Reviving this thread as DH and I are still on the fence on this. I am curious about the mamas who chose to circumcise and if you breastfed or had trouble breastfeeding afterwards. Does anyone feel comfortable enough to discuss this topic from that aspect?

Why would circumcision have any effect on breastfeeding? I have never heard of any link between the two.
We are still on the fence about it. Husband is for, I'm leaning towards not. It looks like it might not happen because the insurance won't cover it and we don't really have the money, plus we will be changing insurances when the baby is born so we haven't picked a pediatrician.

L never had any issues with nursing because of his circ. He was super hungry about 45 minutes after and was fine after that meal.

@KimmySchmidt I have read that the medicine may make them too sleepy to nurse or the trauma of the surgery may make them unable to nurse.
Most places just use sugar water instead of a serious medicine. I can't imagine that the "trauma of surgery" would make a baby refuse more than one feeding. I would not let this be a factor in your decision.
We had a circ done this week and it absolutely had an effect on breastfeeding, for about 3 days. He was clearly in a lot of pain afterwards, when we changed his diaper and put the vaseline on he would scream. And whenever he would pee he would scream too (which he didn't do before). He was a great nurser before the procedure. After, he refused to latch on for several feedings and we ended up having to finger feed him with a syringe. The lactation consultant said his jaw was really tight and that is an indication of pain in newborns. After about 3 days of this he went back to breastfeeding normally.
That said, we had no issues with our other son after his circumcision. So maybe it just depends on the child? Also, I would still have the procedure done. It sucked to go through that, but it wouldn't change our decision.

@homebird First, I am so sorry that happened. That must have been really tough! And second, thank-you so much for sharing your experience and personal opinion on the situation. That was really cool of you and I appreciate your honesty.

@blondie080300 when we had e circumcised it didn't affect his disposition for more than a half hour after the procedure... I don't think I nursed him during that time but never slowed him down. Never showed pain cues during urination or diaper changes.

I kind of forgot my question...but thoughts?

Good luck with whatever choice you decide!
