Chiron

Trying for #3, thinking of names.

Decided on Emilia Rachael if it's a girl  (family name ).

DH really likes Chiron Randall for a boy. I like it too, just concerned because I have a name that is hard to say/spell. What does the bump think of Chiron?

It is a real name and a real spelling. Randall is for my dad.

Older sisters are Pamela and Phoebe.

  • Ky-ren

It's a constellation I believe. Also in a Shakespeare play. We love Shakespeare, which is why we used Phoebe.

Not at all how I thought it would be pronounced!

My first thought (after knowing how to pronounce it) is of Kylo Ren.

Isn't everybody?! If not, they should be!
  • I don't like it. Pamela and Phoebe are nice, Chiron doesn't measure up. Seems made up and come with pronunciation problems. I like Randall.

When I first saw it, it reminded me of chiropractor. I'm not a fan, and it doesn't really match with your other daughters' names. I first thought it was pronounced like Ciaran/Kieran, which I like much better.

EDIT: I wanted to add that it also reminds me of Byron which is a good choice.
  • I don't mind Ky-ren but I wouldn't have pulled that out of Chiron I was thinking Shi-Ron ? I would keep looking as that name is going to be mispelled/pronounced wrong for his entire life. I also don't think it's on par with your daughters whose names are both lovely! Good luck.
  • I agree with the last two PPs - reminds me of chiropractor and I would pronounce it Shy-ron.
  • I would've pronounced it Cheer-on.  I don't mind Ky-ren but honestly I think you're going to spend a lot of time with people mispronouncing the name, and so is your child.  I would pick something else.

  • I totally thought it was a misspelled Charon.

Maybe middle name it? Its a bit hard core compared to Pamela and Phoebe.
  • Chiron is also a name in Greek mythology of a Centaur, not just a constellation. I'm not adverse to legit names that are "out there", which lets be honest this one is. But no one will ever know how to say or spell his name. It doesn't sound like a big deal to you, but it probably will be for him. Especially when he's at work and has to spell it for every single phone call so people can email him something. I know this because I have an "out there" yooneek name and it's a legit PITA. If you're trying to match his sister's name, I don't personally think it flows well. Could Randall be the first name?

  • I'm sorry. I can't seem to get behind this as a FN. Especially not with Pamela and Phoebe. I also agree with PP's - you may want to take on the task of pronouncing and spelling his name to people for 18 years, but he'll have to be doing it with everyone forever after that. I could maybe get on board with a more phonetic spelling of his name as previously mentioned.

    Suggestions:
    Malcolm
    Sebastian
    Caius/Cassius
    Orlando
    Tybalt

I have a friend named Kieran. (K-ear-an) He told me it was an Irish name. I don't know that it "matches" your other LO's names, but I don't mind the name itself. Although I have to add that on first glance I thought it was a misspelled version of the Spanish word for pork rinds... Chicharrón
  • I would assume "Kye-ron" but I don't particularly like it and I don't think it goes well with the older siblings.

Middle name it if your h loves it so much.  Giving this name (impossible to know how to pronounce just by glancing at it) to a kid is sort of just mean...
  • So I think of "chyron", the ticker at the bottom of a tv news screen. I know that's not helpful, but it is a very similar word.

I don't mind the sound or background of the name, but would have never guessed that that's how it's pronounced. I would keep looking, and agree that it really doesn't seem to go with your daughters' names.
  • My first thought was the centaur.  I think this might be better suited as a middle name, especially since you don't seem to have any particular connection with Greek myths.

  • I would intuitively know how to pronounce it but my unfortunate (mis)association at first was for Charon, the ferryman who takes lost souls across the river Styx.
  • While you and those of us who are Star Wars fans would get it he would spend his life having to correct people or having people say his name wrong and that seems unfair

This is where my mind went immediately.
  • Even though I now know the proper pronunciation I still think "Chai - Ron" in my head whenever I look at the title of this thread.

    Me too.
  • Chiron is a centaur in Greek mythology.

Personally, I'm a fan of names that have relatively obscure literary origins.  However, the vast majority of people will be confused as to how to pronounce this one.  I would go back to the well and look for a similarly cool name that is easier to pronounce.  Also, not a name for a mythological creature, even a cool one like a centaur.

Shakespeare seems to have cooler girl names than boy names for some reason.  However, some of my favorite male names from Shakespeare:

    Duncan, Malcolm, Balthasar, Mortimer.

I want to love Oberon, but it's now the name a microbrew beer that is available in many places.  Also, many of Shakespeare's male names are either ordinary or way too "out there."

  • Oberon reminds me of Prince Oberyn from Game of Thrones.
