Diclegis

Maybe someone will tell me this shouldn't be its own thread, but I'll say right now that I don't care so we can just skip that whole back and forth. I think this post would benefit the community.

How "sick" should one be before starting to take diclegis?

I've had nausea for 2 weeks (since 6w) and yesterday threw up for the first time. Today (8w) I threw up again.

I'm worried about the drowsiness side effect since I'm already really fatigued. I also experience most of my nausea in the early evening, so I'm not sure taking it before bed would be the most helpful (but it's extended release so I don't know...)

Re: Diclegis

  • No expert, but my doctor started me Thursday so I'll give you my experience so far!

As for how sick you should be, it's different for every person! With DD, I had a tolerable queasiness. This pregnancy? I was uncontrollably nauseous and sick every minute of every day for over a week, including nighttime, which led to me not sleeping. I felt so sick during the day that I had next to no appetite!

Took two pills Thursday night, knocked me right out! Friday morning was rough, I could not wake up. I forced myself to get up and take my morning dose and get the day started and lo and behold, the nausea had really subsided. There were a few points on Friday where I had to really fight the drowsiness, but it's gotten easier everyday since then!

Not sure it's for everyone, but for me, getting a few hours of rest each night and being able to eat was WELL WORTH it! Best of luck to you @catem07

  • I think it's a great question @catem07 and I'm curious to hear other's experiences.  I haven't thrown up yet and for the most part I can control the nausea and eat, but early in the morning and late and night the queasiness has been pretty bad for me.  I guess I've been wondering the point at which others determined it was worth a try.  Definitely going to talk to my OB about it at my appointment this week and see what she thinks!

  • I forgot to add that I had tried natural remedies (fresh ginger tea, etc) first and nothing even came close to helping...
  • I really don't think you have to be to the point of dehydration and vomitting constantly to justify meds. If you are suffering and your daily ability to function is suffering I think that's certainly enough justification to try the next level in relief. I was on zofran nonstop for about 2-3 weeks straight bc I lost a lot of weight during pregnancy #3 and was going to start needing iv fluids, but I have popped one here or there this preg during periods when I am just miserable and don't feel like I adequately care for my other children even tho I'm not as bad off this time around. It's a matter of balance for me; I can't just lay in bed and I really don't do well roughing it out with discomfort. I don't think this makes me weak or a wimp. As far as dicleglis (so?); I hesitate greatly with taking a medicine with an antihistamine bc they wipe me out completely and my two youngest still get up at night and I'm already struggling to wake up for them as is. I'm going to ask my DR about trying it the next time I am in if I'm still sick, but I don't anticipate that working for me since exhaustion is already my other greatest issue right now. I have heard differing reports tho - some woman seem like they adjust and can operate fine with it so please don't let me discourage you from trying! Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!
  • I'm sure I'll be asking for meds at my first appointment.  I get horribly sick when pregnant.  The sickness started around 7 weeks during my second pregnancy so I figure I have about another week or so before PukeFest 2016 begins.

I've had nausea all day for 10 days straight. I hate to take a medicine at all but ginger, ginger ale, etc aren't working (& now make me more queasy). I have no appetite and have to force myself to eat and am full after a couple bites. My midwife suggested B6, 25 mg I believe  (I only found 100 mg so I had to use a pill cutter) but it's not touching it. She said then I could try unisom and B6 but unisom (basically what diglecis is, she ) is a sleep aid right? I'm so sensitive to anthisamines meds that I hesitate to try that.

I've heard people say they take it at night, but will it work the next day and get me through wk?
  • I'm also really sensitive to antihistamines. I didn't realize that's what caused the drowsiness in diclegis. But I'm on vacation starting Friday through Labor Day so drowsiness wouldn't be the worst thing.

  • I just started unisom + b12.  Day 2 and the nausea is almost all gone and I'm not nearly as tired as I was on day 1.  Going to ask my doc at my first appt on Thurs but so far I have zero regrets with self medicating!  Sick "enough" is all up to you, personally if it affected me more than I wanted that was enough for me!
  • I really just think it's a personal decision. At my first OB appointment with DS she asked if I wanted meds. I was throwing up daily (starting at week 8). I really didn't want to take meds (just a personal choice) so I said no. She suggested giving me the prescription and that way I would have it if I changed my mind. I ended up being sick until week 24 and opted not to take the meds.

I may decide to take them this time around because I'm struggling at home with a 15 month old and running to the bathroom to puke. However, the extra fatigue side effect also doesn't sound pleasant to me. I'm a strong-willed person, so if I decide I don't want meds, I'll just suffer through it.
  • Lurking from March 2017...my doctors office suggested I try b6 + unisom before Diclegis (I think it's expensive and a lot of insurances make you try that combo first since it's essentially the same thing).  It ended up being a miracle for me and totally turned my morning sickness around. Because I only take the unisom at night, it knocks me out but I'm fine in the morning.  I worried that that would not be the case with the Diclegis, which I think is either extended relief or you take it multiple times a day.  I also started feeling better, so I never called back to fill the Diclegis prescription.

I just have to remember to take the unisom at least 8 hours before I need to wake up or my alarm going off kills me.
  • For anyone interested in trying the two over the counter, it is doxylamine 10mg + pyridoxine (B6) 10mg per tablet of diclegis.  The prescription is extended release, so not exactly the same.
  • I was prescribed zofran last time (I know it's not the same thing, but similar situation) because I was losing weight. My doctor basically felt like if it's completing derailing your existence, you need something to help you function.

  • I asked my OB for it ahead of time because I was beginning to feel bad enough to be useless. I work, so being nauseous to the point of not being able to concentrate is not an option for me. The first couple of mornings are hard, but your body adjusts. @catem07 I'm sensitive to antihistamines, too, (1/2 benadryl knocks me out), but the benefit of not being sick definitely outweighed that for me.

I've mentioned before that you can ask your doctor for samples if you don't want to buy it. There is a coupon available online that will allow you to get it for $40. My pharmacy automatically applied the coupon, otherwise it was somewhere around $400. When you ask for a sample, see if your OB has a coupon, too.

  • @gardenmama17 So that combo mirrors diclegis, without the extended release? Is it like a once-a-day thing?

  • @catem07 yes, that's the dosing per tablet. The dosing instructions are to take 2 tablets at bedtime (so 20mg of each).  This can be increased to 1 tablet in the morning, 1 tablet in the afternoon and 2 tablets at bedtime.
