Baby Names

Is this weird?

We're expecting #2, and we are trying to come up with a possible girl's name. We both love the name Lucille (nn Lucy), but we have a cat named Lucy. Would it be weird to name our child the same name as our cat?

I can't decide if it's actually weird, or I am just overthinking it.

Re: Is this weird?

  • If cat and baby are living in the same house at the same time, I think that's a little confusing for everyone. If it was a cat you had previously, or another family member's cat, that would be less weird.

  • Yeah, too weird. Some similar options: Lily, Emily, Olivia nn Livi, or Lyla?
  • great name, unfortunately it's too weird to have the cat and the baby with the same name

  • Yep too weird. If the cat was a previous pet I think it would be ok. But two Lucy's in the house is a no go

  • Honestly Lucille is beautiful and if you both really love it, I'd still use it.

I agree that Lucille is beautiful, you just would not be able to use Lucy as a NN. Mable Lilly as a NN?
  • Too weird.

  • Ah, the real question here is, do you actually call your cat Lucy? I'm sure we have all had pets that had a name, but we called them by another name. My cat's name was Rogue (as in X-men), but we never called her that. We called her Fun (nobody knew why. It just started and stuck). If your cats name is Lucy, but you call her Booger or something, then the argument can be made for using Lucy on your daughter.

But if you're shouting Lucy for your cat, then no. It's probably not going to work.

  • I have a cat named Cody and I'd never use his name for one of my kids. But Cody is like a child to me, so that being said I wouldn't do it, but that's just me!

  • Lucille is beautiful- your cat won't be around forever (not to be rude!!) If you want a nickname for Lucille, you could call her Lulu?
Love this suggestion!  Lucille is too great of a name just because of a nickname.  Lulu is a darling nn!
  • Love Lucille, but I wouldn't do it

I love momma2char's suggestion too. Lucille with the nickname Lulu would be great!

  • Do you exclusively call the cat Lucy? Or do you also call her Lulu? If not then I think you can maybe get away with Lucille NN Lulu like PP suggested.

    Maybe Cecile or Cecilia instead?

  • It is weird. I have a cat named Lily and I would never use it on a child even though I think it's a super cute name.
  • How old is the cat? How attached is she to the name? Perhaps you could change it over time to Lilu or something so that you could still have a Lucille? Our cat's name is Calypso, but we call her "Pretty Kitty" so much that I think I could easily change it.

  • She's 6.5 and we've had her since she was 10 weeks old. Aside from a brief period of time at the shelter we adopted her from, she's always been Lucy. If you say Lucy, she looks up and acknowledges you.

It's too weird, which I figured as much, but I wanted to be certain. Thanks ladies!
