Re: Weekly Randoms (8/15)

  • @BumpasaurusRex - I copy/pasted some comments I made last week when the topic of Blue Apron came up.  I'm a huge fan of having a meal plan and am totally willing to pay a company to get me more organized.  I also tried onceamonthmeals.com (you can access most/all of their menues for free) because I convinced myself that I could totally be that kind of person.  Turns out I can't.

The Fresh 20 - They send a 5 dinner plan and grocery list each week.  The idea is that you can buy 20 fresh ingredients each week (paired with pantry staples) to make all of your dinners.  They'll send you a free sample of any of their plan types and usually follow up with discount emails.

Real Plans - This one is super flexible and can be used to plan out 7 days of breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Additionally, you can pick specific ingredients that you don't like and they will never be included in your recipes.  This one takes a bit more work, but it's my current favorite because I can import my own favorite recipes to mix in with theirs.

  • With back sleeping- until I was pregnant I had never slept on my back so I didn't think I'd have trouble, but wouldn't you know I started waking up like that while I was pregnant.
That's what happened to me what is up with that. I used to try really hard to back sleep, again for wrinkle purposes, and only can do it pregnant when you're not supposed to?

Also with the ultrasounds.....there's nothing cheaper than $70 around here. For 10 min. Ridiculous. My sister paid $200+ for a package of 3. And she gets one monthly anyway for being high risk. I should just go with her and throw my belly in the way.

  • Now that my appetite is back to normal, I want to give meal planning a try.  It seems like it'd be a good way to save some money and I like the idea of getting home from work and already knowing what I'm going to cook.

Anyone have any tips or tricks?

I usually make a spreadsheet of meals and ingredients before I shop. I stick with a lot of staples that we really enjoy and are ok with having weekly: burritos, stir fry, veggie burgers, pasta primavera, stuff like that (I'm meatless, but you can swap out your own go-tos). We're in a veggie CSA so I also plan around what we get from there. Eating seasonally is way cheaper! I don't do the prepping on Sunday's thing. I find that way more annoying than just cooking each night as I go.

I have a notebook, 1/2 the page for menu, 1/2 the page for grocery list. then I just tear the list off and take it to the store. It helps keep costs down and I know exactly what I need!

has anyone done freezer meals to stock up for baby?
  • @BumpasaurusRex - are you on the Pinterest? I make a board for each week or month, depending on my ambition. I pin recipes on there, or just general (like, I don't need a recipe for meatloaf for example), and caption it with the day. Like if my board is "September Dinners" if i pin something I have planned for the 10th I will put the day in the caption. At the end of the month/week I pin keepers into my general dinner board and get rid of the ones that were duds. It sounds way complicated but its not. Also, because I don't want people judging how much cheese I consume I keep my meal plan board secret ;)
Adding on- I like Pinterest because DH gets off at 3:00 PM so starts majority of dinners, he can very easily access the plan and recipe!

I did freezer meals last time.  I just picked some meals and made a double batch and would freeze a tray. I wasnt doing the crockpot dump ones but I may this time.  We did stuff like baked ziti, chili, burritos, sausage peppers onions, and calzones, all easy stuff.

I don't meal plan, but DH and I do the crock pot freezer meals and love them.  We make like 30 meals at once, freeze em and then just defrost and dump when we're ready to eat.  We buy everything in bulk and on sale at BJ's and then spend a weekend doing it and have food for at least 6 weeks.

@Gretchypoo DH and I will be doing lots of these for right after baby is born.

  • @silvercamaro77 I did the same thing!! I've never ever slept on my back, but now I wake up on my back ALL THE TIME!! I might have to look into something to keep me from rolling clear to my back. Once I get big enough I know I won't be able to breathe well and won't physically be able to do it anymore but right now it's super weird to me that I've been waking up like that every night.

Also it took a while to type the previous post out so I'm sorry for stirring the pot again, after it ended.

  • I've been using Plan to Eat for a few months and have really liked it.  There is a bit of leg work up front to put your recipes in, but it honestly wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and now that we have our core meals put in I add new ones that I want to try without really even thinking about it.

In a nutshell- you put the recipe in, there's a calendar that you can drag and drop the meals onto (with spots for meals, snacks, and notes), and based on what you've added to the calendar it generates the shopping list by category (Deli/Produce, etc).  There are some others that do about the same thing, but this one is better at combining the same ingredient into 1 line on your shopping list where others I've seen will list the specific quantity for each recipe that calls for it (so others will say 1 lb ground beef; 1.5 lbs ground beef and P2E just says 2.5 lbs ground beef).  There's a good intro video if you go to their site that explains all the other features it has (like tagging and recipe sharing etc).

Freezer Meals: We are actually starting to test some new freezer friendly meals now (1-2 per week) so that in a few more months I can stock the freezer with ones we know we like and that will do well.  I started by pinning a bunch on Pinterest, then I went through each of the websites I pinned and clipped any recipes I thought we'd like into P2E.  I've been tagging them as New and Freezer so that I can pull them up quickly when menu planning and pick out a couple.  Then, when we make the item for the week, we make a double batch so that we can immediately taste it and have one to try from frozen.  If we don't like it, I pass the freezer one along to someone that might and delete the recipe so that we don't make it again.

  • Guys, is anyone else wicked itchy? Like my stomach and chest areas - its weird. Remember in like middle school when your friends were like "when your boobs are itchy, that means they're growing" when, ya know, that was a huge concern? Never got that medically backed up haha but could that be a thing??

I'm not sure that all of you have read what was said in the "PSA....PSC" thread.  If you haven't, please read that thread first before making your opinion.
I shouldn't have to feel like I shouldn't post something because of what one specific person is going to say to me.  Regardless of whether you call it "snarky" or "cyber bullying" she has made me feel uncomfortable enough to consider leaving this board.  Especially considering that I never said anything to her.  I was just trying to diffuse a situation and she made comments against me. If my "worrying" annoys her, she can easily just ignore me.
If my worrying annoys anyone else, you can ignore me, too. But you don't have to be sarcastic or snarky.
This was supposed to be a place where we can talk, ask questions, and not feel judged. That's not at all what it feels like.
All right, I'm just getting caught up here, but @AfKash, I'm gonna need to ask you to take a step back.  You are getting bent out of shape over absolutely nothing.  If @Gingersnap's comments are enough to make you consider leaving the board, that's your prerogative, but you don't get to step in here and dictate how other people respond to your comments on a public forum.

Nowhere in the TOU, the rules of this board, or anywhere else does it say you have a right not to feel judged.  In fact, you don't get any say over the way others behave.  The only thing you get to have control over in this world is yourself.  If you can't handle a little (extremely gentle) ribbing, that's not anyone's problem but your own.

I know you're going through a lot and it's clear that you have some significant anxieties, but it's not fair to take that out on other people.  If you are having anxieties that you can't control, then maybe you need to think about speaking to a professional.

We will also be making a lot freezer meals from the crock pot before the new baby gets here. I'm a huge soup fan and so I'll have a huge stack of different varieties. I remember not having a good appetite the first few weeks after having DS but knew I needed to stay hydrated and so the soups with cheese and crackers were good for us.

  • @jlellis603 my skin gets really dry feeling all across my stomach and sides when I'm pregnant and it makes it feel itchy and kind of burns sometimes.  Using a good lotion and even layering up a lotion and an oil in the winter helped a lot.  If I tried to skip it I would regret it within the hour.  I haven't hit that point with this pregnancy yet, but I've also been pretty good about lotioning up every day trying to prevent it.

  • @peachesnbean Asiago Bagels, mmmmmmmm.

  • @jlellis603 I'm not super itchy but my skin is definitely dry and not itself! Right now I'm sure it's probably due to stretching etc and changing hormones.

However later on in pregnancy if the itching ever gets to be severe and localized on your hands or feet, please tell your doctor as it could be the start of Cholestasis. I got this towards the end of my last pregnancy and was induced at 38 weeks. Definitely nothing to freak you out about but something to know for future reference etc.

@gretchypoo I did for my first baby and it was a LIFESAVER!! I did it right before I had the baby about 2 weeks. I definately recommend it.
As @SweetT mentioned. If you know it is a tried and true meal for you then I would go ahead and make doubles now as you go so that when it comes baby time you wont have alot to do. --- we should all do this baby or no baby.. it's just smart.
@mrs.DramaK any receipes you want to share? It sounds like you probably have alot of good ones.
Also I obviously shouldn't quote and just use the @ feature cause it leads me to post too many times in a row.... and I should read the WHOLE randoms and get caught up before commenting... ok off to lunch.

  • For your freezer and freezer crock pot meals, did you find any tasting "fresher" than the other? Or did you prefer crockpot over freezer-to-oven meals? I made a few freezer casserole dishes for when DS was a newborn, but I wasn't thrilled with them. I followed recipes I found online but is there a holy grail website for make ahead meals?
  • I'm leaning more towards freezer crockpot meals. I like the idea of dumping it in a pot in the morning and calling it a day.

    Yaaaaaas.
Plus February is perfect crock pot weather.
  • Guys we should do Meal Plan Monday. It was listed in the intro post but I think the person who wanted to start it sadly had to leave and it never got picked back up.
Agreed. Now that we're all climbing out of 1st tri, I think it's perfect timing.

Also @kirstynikole my freezer to crock-pot meals never taste like they're from the freezer, but I've never done a frozen casserole for comparison.
Even if there's no specific thread, I would love alllll the recipes

  • Thanks guys! I've been lotioning fairly regularly but I guess not enough. My skin doesn't feel dry so I guess I just didn't think about it. @kirstynikole oh jeeze so much to remember haha. thank you!

Meal Plan Monday sounds awesome! I do meal planning/freezer meals kind of regularly and would love to see what everyone has for recipes!

  • so my random is that I was up a good portion of the night starting at about 2 am, with my poor DS, who kept throwing up. He drank some red kool aid crap H gave him so it was bright red vomit all over his bed, the floor, his poor little self (which also scared the crap out of me at first cuz sleepy  mom brain sees red = blood) Also, the cleaning up rancid vomit smell is awesome for an already super nauseated preggo. H was oblivious until the 3rd time (he wears a CPAP mask for apnea and didn't hear my screaming, retching kid apparently), but then just stood uselessly in the bathroom doorway looking at us as I rubbed my son's back while he puked. Thank God my mom was taking him today so I didn't have to miss work (I have -1 sick hours ha) but I am barely able to keep my head off the desk because OMG I'm so tired I can't see straight! Having taken unisom, pregnancy exhaustion and lack of sleep last night is making me a zombie today.

okay enough crying now. :end rant"

  • @jlellis603 lol it's honestly so rare it will probably never be an issue but having the knowledge may help you or someone you know which is why I mention it. :#
