How are you announcing?

I always love to hear stories on how people are or have announced their pregnancy. How far will you be when you announce and what are your plans?!

I have 2 girls already and I'm not quite sure what we will be doing this time! My first we put sonogram photos in cards for family. Second, she wore a shirt announcing herself as a future big sister... trying be be out of the box this time!

Re: How are you announcing?

  • We are announcing to our parents next weekend. We bought a book (I Am A Big Brother) and are going to ask them to read DS a story before his nap. Hopefully he will cooperate and hand them the book.

We like announcing with games. We are going to tell my sister and her husband next weekend as well at our games night. I already know what game we will play where you have to write down answers, and I'll just make my question "in what month will DS's sibling be born?" Can't wait to tell her because she's pregnant too!

We haven't decided how to tell our friends yet. That won't be until 12 weeks.

  • We are slowly telling close family and friends. I had surgery a few weeks ago and the anesthesiologist accidentally told my dad and my aunt that I was pregnant. We had to tell my mom after that. We will tell DH's parents over Labor Day weekend, when I will be 9 weeks. We are going to give them a copy of one of the ultrasound photos in a frame that says "Hi Grandma and Grandpa! Can't wait to meet you in April!"

We will make a few announcements here and there in person after that, and a few phone calls to family out of town. Then I have the PERFECT FB announcement. I've been planning it for a while. I want to keep it a secret, though, to keep people from stealing it. It's going to be awesome.
  • DH and I love to read (and we pretty much collect books) so when it comes time for a public announcement I think I'll take a picture of What to Expect, The Expectant Father's guide, and a baby book (right now the only one we have is in Spanish, so that might confuse people. I need to pick a good one up) and post that with some comment.

  • My sister is a photographer so she will take a family photo shoot and we will do a photo with 2 yo DD holding a sign that says "I'm a big sister!". She just did that for a friend of mine and it turned out super cute!

My mom is an elementary school teacher and a big fan of children's books. Her birthday was this week and I sent her a card telling her that her present was fragile and I would give it to her when I saw her next month. I'm going to give her a book with a note on the inside from "the baby". Right now I'm thinking about doing a Mercer Mayer book because it would be really obvious: "Just Grandma and Me" or "Just Grandpa, Grandma, and Me". I was also considering Thunder Cake, a story of a grandma who distracts her granddaughter from a storm by making cake. Although, she owns this book and it might not be obvious at first, which could be a good thing. Anyone have thoughts or have other ideas of children's books about Grandparents?

For our "social media" announcement in like a million years, I want to do aprons on hooks with a caption that says, "Adding another chef to our kitchen". My husband and I love to cook, so I think that will be cute.

  • We told our families this past weekend because we couldn't hide it anymore. We sent a series of pics of DS in a "Big Brother" shirt in our family group text (we live out of town). My BIL & his wife are pregnant as well as another SIL, so there will be a baby boom on that side of the family. We were the last to announce, so it's probably old news to them.  :D

For the family we did see in person, we just put DS in the same shirt. My Mom and sister saw it right away, but everyone else was a little slow.  :|

  • If we can make it past our cruise with my parents in November we will be announcing with our Christmas Card.  We will do photos with the ultrasound and with LO wearing a shirt/holding a sign.  If we wait that long we can also announce gender at the same time so it'll be a two for one special!
  • @allybadry I was hoping to do something similar with DS wearing a big brother shirt for his birthday party, but I will be about 15 weeks by then...even if I can keep it a secret that long, I am not so sure that I will be able to hide a bump that will likely be forming by then!

I better start thinking about a back up plan!
  • We want to get a tshirt for DD that says I'm going to be a big sister. Then we were just going to go visit our parents and basically wait for them to notice.
Then we were going to do some pics of DD and post that on FB later on.

But here is a question: Where can I buy a tshirt that says big sister? Other than online? I'm looking for a retail store I can walk into today if possible.

  • We're going to call DH's parents and tell them the same weekend that my parents are coming out for a visit (I should be around 11 weeks at that point). DD is going to be wearing a Big Sister shirt when they get off of the airplane. Then we'll call our siblings.

We probably won't say anything on Facebook, maybe at all, but at least until we find out the sex.
  • @MrsBakes, good luck finding a shirt! I've been looking everywhere for one for DS! I thought it would be so simple. Can't find one anywhere!!!! You'd think this would be a pretty popular buy...

Yeah this could  go into the WTF thread, too. I also thought I could walk into any Target and grab one, why is this so hard. WHY????

  • @MrsBakes I have seen them at Target from time to time. I ended up getting my daughter a plain white shirt and using puffy paint.

  • We are still trying to decide how to announce. I told H by putting DD in a "Big Sister" shirt, so that is an option. But we are going to FL soon on vacation, so were thinking about doing something down there. Maybe an extra pair of sandals or writing in the sand.

  • DD's 3rd birthday part is the day I am 11 weeks. It is perfect timing. That is about when we wanted to announce anyway. My SIL knows, since we live with her and I didn't want to have to keep it a secret in my own house. But other than her no one else does. My mom was supposed to be gone for 4 months starting this week so I was going to mail her something. But now she will not. I think my mom might be a little annoyed to find out with everyone else. But, the last time we announced to them was the worst thing ever. So, I sort of think she lost that privilege when she cried sad tears last time. This time I know she will be happier though. DD's birthday is the same day as my mom's and that is the day of the party. So, I might put an ultrasound picture (hopefully we will have one by then) in a frame and give it to her as a present. Then we will post our official FB announcement the next day or something. Still working on the perfect picture to post on FB.

I'll tell family when I start showing. I don't want to break the news if it's just going to end in another loss and don't feel like I want a support system in case of that loss just yet.

  • @MrsBakes @lemoncookie09 we got our big brother shirt at carters osh kosh (It's one store in Canada). I just looked on the us website for carters and I see Big Sister ones so you might find them in your local store
  • @MrsBakes @lemoncookie09 we bought one from Etsy.com.  Not sure how soon you  plan to announce though because it usually takes a week or two for the vendors to make and ship, especially if you personalize it.

  • @MrsBakes @lemoncookie09 We picked one up at Carters this weekend! FYI: According to the sales associate, they don't offer 'big sis' or 'big bro' shirts in less than 2T, only 'bro/sis' and 'little bro/sis'. DD is 17 months so we went ahead and got a big sis one in 2T. We figure she'll be the perfect size for it when baby arrives!

  • We're not doing anything elaborate. We live quite far away from all our family, so it's phone calls/skype for parents and siblings, who will then pass on the news to the rest of the family, texts/fb messages for close friends. Everyone else will find out when we post a birth announcement! That's how we handled it with DD. I think it worked out pretty well.

  • Such great ideas on here! Hubby already slipped it to his mom and she slipped it to his dad so I'm a bit bummed as this is the first grandchild on that side and wanted to do something fun!  I think we will either take a cute picture with our dog sending the message somehow or during a family photo (common in hubby's side) say "say sjg is pregnant" instead of say cheese.  We also have a tradition of writing songs in our family for a specific holiday so we might write something to send out because my sibs live in other countries!  Can't wait!
  • We found a "promoted to big brother" t shirt at Target, so that will work fine for announcing over Skype to DHs parents this weekend and everyone else at 12 weeks. We don't have any family here. I'm flying to see my dad in September so I'll see how long it will take him to notice the shirt. It's not as creative as I normally roll, but I'm bloated and lazy.

DH is a band teacher, so he will announce to his varsity band by telling them something to the effect of wanting to introduce them to a "new sound" and will play a recording of the heartbeat. I'm really hoping to get the band in full marching uniform to help us announce the sex when we know in November. DH already has them working on a song, but they have no clue.

Last time we were lucky enough to have DHs parents come into town when we wanted to announce. We waited at the security exit at the airport and unfurled a sign reading "we're having a baby!". A friend filmed it, MIL cried. It was epic. I have no idea if I'm allowed to AW a YouTube video here, but I'll post it if so.

  • @MrsBakes @lemoncookie09 I couldn't find a shirt either, so I went to Hobby Lobby and used iron on's to make my own and it didn't come out too shabby! Can't figure out how to attach the picture :(

  • @lovelongdog06 I don't see why you couldn't post an AW youtube video. Anyone who doesn't want to watch can skip it...

  • We will tell our parents after next week when we go in for our first U/S. We are meeting my parents next wknd to go on a brewery tour and celebrate my dad's birthday, so I think I am going to put the ultrasound picture in an envelope inside his card. I may get them or make a photo frame having to do with grandparents and put the photo inside though. We'll have to tell them right away because my not ordering beer will be HIGHLY suspicious  :D

We will see in-laws over Labor Day wknd and I'm planning on making shirts for our three nieces that say "I love my little cousin" or "Promoted to cousin 4-5-16" or something like that. This will be their first cousin so I know they'll be excited! Then hopefully we can get some cute pictures with them for FB announcement, cause otherwise I have no idea what to do for that!

  • @Neikoda What do we think about making an AW announcement sticky thread? I think it would be fun to post our photo announcements. People are obviously free to blur out faces if they want. But, it would be fun to share our stories and reactions there as well. Thoughts?
