Is anyone else having breakouts of cystic acne? I have had clear skin my entire life and now I am CONSTANTLY getting these monstrous under the skin zits that are beyond painful and frustrating.
Rodan and Fields is not made for cystic acne. Having said that, I've been using R+F Unblemish since July 27th because I was desperate like you are (I had adult cystic acne before becoming pregnant and before we were TTC I was using antibiotics and topical medications to control it and since becoming pregnant it has gotten much worse). While it reduces redness, the cysts aren't as deep and one was stopped in it's tracks, it's not helping new cysts from forming. My face is just as broken out with cysts as it was before. I will say it diminishes the small zits and pimples quite well. I have 4 "trigger" spots on my face where they mainly populate and I can feel them forming days in advance. This is the worst my face has looked since I was 23. If you find R+F works for you, I'm so happy for you and don't want to steer you away but it is $200 for the regimen and wanted to give my first hand experience thus far. I'm still going to use it because it does have other positive benefits but I dont know about getting another supply--especially since I got an email stating the prices were increasing. Good luck! Let us know if you find something that works!
Also, there is another thread I think just labeled as Acne that has more suggestions as well.
I've gotten cystic acne periodically for the past 15 years and I have tried everything. When it comes to the ones caused by hormones, topical treatments haven't done me any good. Like pp said, smaller pimples or breakout zones can be treated, but the deep ones aren't as easy to get rid of. Also, don't touch and don't try to pop them! Unless you're confident you can get absolutely everything out, it's not worth inviting them to come back or to stick around an extra two weeks. If you leave them alone, it takes about 4 days for them to go away.
Mine is definitely hormone related as it only started once I got pregnant, so I really can't justify spending that much on something that I'm pretty certain is going to be a short term issue. But thank you all so much for the info! I found a clay mask that helped after one use so I think I'm going to stick to that for now and hope for the best!
I have had cystic acne since I was young. Birth control really helped keep it at bay and I only get one angry one every once in a while around my period. Now, with being off birth control, hormones, and not being able to use the salicylic acid concealer I lived by by Murad, the cysts are back with a vengeance. Honestly, topicals have only done a little for me in the best when the cyst is actually active. What I have found to help is Cerave face wash, ICE, and calamine lotion. Keeping swelling down is key and if you feel a cyst coming in, ice it as often as you can throughout the day. At night, but calamine lotion on to keep the oil down and inflammation down. The key to controlling cysts are controlling inflammation and oil. I hope this helps some.
@BrennansMom2012 My mom and I got the idea from this expensive drying lotion made by Mario Badescu. His has a few other ingredients including salicylic acid and camphor oil that you can't use while pregnant. Other than that, seems to be pretty much calamine, which makes sense since it's a drying lotion. Hope it helps! Don't forget ice too!
