Sales and advice on maternity clothes

I've seen shopping ideas scattered across a few threads here, but I thought it might be useful to start a thread where we can share tips and sales when we see them. I figure we are all getting to the point where we are starting to buy maternity clothes. Also, as a FTM, I appreciate the tips I've seen on here so far on where to shop and which clothes work well. Any additional advice is welcome!

Destination Maternity seems to have a good sale right now, especially for bras and jeans:

  • I've been slowly stocking up through Zulily.com for both baby supplies and maternity clothes! Love it

  • I had never ordered from ThredUp before, but I bought a couple of maternity items in like-new condition for a great deal recently. They seem to have discount codes frequently, especially for your first order!

  • @EnglishTeacherMama good tips thanks! I'll have to try out stitch fix. I inadvertently stocked up on some tunics on zulily before finding out I was pregnant and since then I've bought some leggings and long camis.

  • Recently my go to is H&M, Asos, Topshop, and Nordstrom Rack
  • Honestly I thought the basics on the couple racks at local stores was enough. I wore mostly my own non-maternity clothes till the last month.  ((Except for pants)) unbuttoned shirts or sweaters over Preggo tanks, high waisted skirts, maxi skirts and dresses, etc.
  • I just picked up a few shirts at Target from the clearance rack - spent less than $20! And they're perfect for NJ - short sleeve so good for the rest of the summer into fall and then can throw a cardigan over them when it starts getting colder!

DS was born in Sept so I  LIVED in dresses. I am NOT looking forward to having to dress myself this winter. Especially since I don't feel like I have the body shape to pull of leggings outside of the home/gym. I will admit I do feel like I'm missing out in this dept.
  • Thyme Maternity has 50% off clearance right now. I got some tanks for $5 and some yoga pants for $10. It's all summer stuff so not super helpful in terms of work wear going forward, but I'm happy to have a few more comfy things for being at home.

  • @marshmallowfarts I haven't gotten a lot, just some camis and tshirts and some pants/leggings on the way. One of the camis the strap completely ripped off after wearing twice and one run in the wash so I contacted them and got store credit back. So it may kinda be hit or miss depending on what brand it is. I know they do sell pink blush on there quite often too and I've bought regular clothes from them that seem decent quality.

VERY true. DD was August. And I know this time will be a totally different ball game. Especially because I'm getting bigger faster.
  • I went to a Motherhood outlet today and they had a ton of clearance at 50% off already reduced prices. Not sure if this is everywhere, but I got several tops and two pairs of jeans for around $100.
  • @marshmallowfarts so far so good! I wore a maternity dress to a wedding yesterday (didn't want to invite speculation, plus the colors matched the theme) and the details on it were well done. A couple of the shirts are slightly thinner material, but nothing that I'm disappointed with in any way.

  • Gap and old navy are doing their gap cash and old navy cash.  Plus gap is 40% off.  So, if you spend $50 at gap, you get $25 cash back to spend on a purchase of $50 or more.  I think gap cash can be redeemed starting in 2 weeks.

  • @sgrant432 yeah already got my email, it says it can be redeemed 9/14 to 9/19.

  • I just found some Gap jeans on Poshmark that were new with tags on for $20. Its a really cool app that is similar to ebay. There are all kinds of sizes/styles to choose from. I have been wanting this particular pair of jeans from Gap and they are always sold out (full paneled, skinny fit - to wear with boots in the winter) so I felt like this was a huge score!!!
  • This makes me want to try out poshmark.  I had it for a while to sell some things and it was just too much work trying to take super cute pictures for selling.  Buying is another story! :)

  • Has anyone bought/used a belly band? My pants are starting to get too tight, but I've just been using a hair tie over the button. Are the bands worth it?

@Jilliants - They are AMAZING! (Wearing mine today in fact). I will say that they run small. I typically wear a small/medium shirt and so I bought the S/M size and had to return for a M/L because there was no way.

  • @Jilliants  I mentioned this somewhere else I think, but if you have an old tank top that you don't mind parting with, cutting it in half makes a great belly band. I'm a cheap-a mofo sometimes.

I inherited one from my sister and used it over the weekend for the first time. It was nice because I could wear my regular clothes. It did get hot and itchy for me though. I don't think I could use it all the time.
  • I use a brand called the belly button maternity band.  It actually has adjustable buttons that button on to your jeans/pants and is designed to expand with you!  I wore mine up until about my 7th month last pregnancy.  They also have an over the belly design that I bought in every color.

Oh I like that idea of it buttoning to my pants! I'm so worried the band alone won't keep my pants up all day at work! Did you find it online or in a store?
  • We have a local "baby traders" site where its all gently used baby items... and I scored an amazing haul of maternity clothes on the weekend. $80 for 6 pairs of thyme maternity pants (4 jeans, 2 leggings), a pair of pj's, and 8 thyme shirts, all in amazing shape. I was a little weary of getting second hand clothes, but thought for $80 if I even got 2 or 3 good things, it would probably be worth it.

I agree. I think maternity in the winter is so easy (I had a March 2015 baby). I got a good pair of maternity jeans, and a few tops, but mostly I wore all my normal cardigans and sweatshirts and stuff, plus dresses with leggings under, or just leggings with longer tops, button downs, etc. I was able to wear most of my stretchy, longer t-shirts and tank tops through my whole pregnancy.

I know this isn't the case for everyone, but my hips grew so much during pregnancy that I needed larger underwear, and I was so glad when I finally bit the bullet and got some that was comfortable rather than squeezing into my normal pairs. Just got a size bigger, didn't need special maternity or anything. Same with bras, I was so glad to get bigger bras, as well as some basic Genie bras to wear around the house and to sleep in, they are so comfy when pregnant and good for postpartum/breastfeeding too.

  • @Jilliants i got them online.  here is a link.
https://www.bellybuttonband.com  I use the band for early pregnancy and used the body bands later in pregnancy.  Saved me a lot of money on buying new jeans/work pants, etc.

  • Can someone tell me about maternity scrubs? I have looked online and there is not a lot to choose from. Could I just buy bigger sizes and still look presentable at work?
  • @allysondunn2 Amazon has maternity scrubs both pants and tops. I know that the cherokee brand that makes scrubs has them as well. This is my fourth preganancy and I never really wore maternity scrubs I just bought bigger bottoms and wore long cami  with a maternity shirt. Which is what most of the girls do at the hospital I work at.  This time around I did buy a pair (havent worn it yet) since I anticipate my belly being at its biggest  but it is kind of hit or miss.

  • @lilies5/28/06 Thanks for the advice!
  • Bit the bullet and bought myself a black and white band from Motherhood! Found out that they're 2 for $25 right now too!
  • Hi ladies - FTM;13 weeks 2 days...I started purchasing clothing from Destination Maternity, Target, Goodwill and online with Zulily. Not sure I'll purchase from Zulily again, shipping takes forever, and I wasn't crazy about the quality f clothing.
  • I got some gift vouchers from family for Old Navy and H&M so going to get some items from there. Mostly I am concerned about still looking dressy for work. Jeans are really too dressed down so hoping I can find some trousers that will work!

  • Digging this up again (sorry) to say if you ladies haven't checked out Groop Dealz, it's a great website. Typically boutiques and such sell stuff at a discounted price. I only occasionally see maternity stuff, but they have a lot of great baby/kid clothes and accessories and such.
