Thin lining & Viagra question

Hi ladies,
(TW: BFN mentioned)
After 2 BFN from FETs, my lining just won't thicken beyond 5mm. This is the 4th cycle we had to cancel due to thin lining and I'm just inconsolable. We've tried various protocols, pills, suppositories, injections, Gonal f cycles... Nothing works anymore. I also do regular acupuncture, eat healthy, exercise and use all the supplements recommended, yet still it remains too thin...

My RE is now putting me on vaginal Viagra for the next cycle (together with oestrogen and patches). Has anyone else here been prescribed viagra? Has it helped? I did some reading on Doctor Google and it seems to be a thing that has proven to work, but I'm a bit apprehensive.
Thanks

Re: Thin lining & Viagra question

  • @flanners1 I don't have any experience with the viagra but I understand your frustration with the thin lining. My RE has said that if this FET doesn't work she is going to try endometrial scratching to see if that improves it for the next one. Let me know the results if you go the viagra route as I might be bringing that up to try.

  • I don't have any experience with this, but I'm sorry you are having so much trouble cycling. I hope the viagra works for you and gives you a chance to transfer.
  • I don't have any experience with thin lining as mine is too thick and I just had to go in and have it removed. I would gladly give you some of mine.
  • @katymarie101 sorry to hear you are going through the opposite. This process is just maddening sometimes! I hope things work out for you.
@mtpbadger let me know if your lining was ok or if you have to go the scratching route. I read about it and it seems to have worked for many. Sounds so weird though! I'm curious to see what this Viagra will do... Cycle starts next week so shall keep you posted.
@BornReady thanks for your kind words. Lots of fx to you

  • So the viagra route worked and my lining is at 7. Not great, but good enough to proceed. Given I used to have barely 4.5, the RE was quite happy. They made me take the normal oral pills vaginally, so I didn't get any special pills (I heard some countries have vaginal pessaries).
Everything else looks great. Transfer is tomorrow.

@mtpbadger did your FET work out? Sorry I've not been following your story, there are so many threads, it seems there are so many more people posting than when I joined last year, and I just can't keep up.
@katymarie101 did you find a solution to your thick lining?
Lots of fx to all of you

  • @flanners1 that is awesome that your lining got to 7! My FET wasn't successful and my RE is switching up the protocol for the next cycle, hitting my body hard with estrogen patches and estrace vaginally along with lovenox injections and a steroid to see if that helps. Fx that your transfer goes well and this is it for you!!
  • Hi Ladies,

I am joining in on this because I don't know much about this lining stuff and am learning some things from what you're posting.  I'm sorry you girls have been going through this... I'm now wondering if I am too?  I just finished an IVF cycle and no one even mentioned my lining!  I'd like to think that it must've been fine if nothing was brought up, but who knows?  I never even knew to ask!  This will be another question I bring up to my RE on Wednesday.  What thickness is considered good/ideal?  FX that new meds help things improve for you.

  • @flanners1 we are in a 3 month hold, when the RE went in and cleaned out the extra lining he found pre cancerous cells so I'm on meds for that for the next 3 months and then we will tackle the other issues. I can say that I'm coming to terms of the pause and that IF could have saved my life. If we never looked in to having a baby who knows when we would have found the cancer.
  • @flanners1 I'm so happy for you.
  • @mtpbadger sorry to hear about the cancellation. I've been there so many times and I know how you must feel. I hope this next cycle works for you. That sounds like heavy duty medication if they are using steroids too but hoping it helps. I don't know if it helped in my case but I also did some fertility yoga poses at home and moderate exercise of 30-40 mins brisk walking every day. Fx for your next cycle!
@joneser1281 I also had no idea how many things have to go right for you to be able to have a successful IVF cycle. It's extremely stressful and worrying, but your RE will tell you if there is anything you need to do. Don't worry about lining if they haven't brought it up. Lots of people don't have these issues at all. Fx to you on your journey.
@katymarie101 I'm so sorry to hear about your situation. But it really has a silver lining that you found the cells now. Are they going to remove the cells and how quickly can you recover from it? I had something similar in my cervix a few years back. It's terrifying but they can remove everything and you basically go back to normal in a few weeks. Hoping it all works out for you. Thanks for your wishes

AFM - transfer done and officially PUPO with 2 beautiful embabies. Nervous but positive. Bring on the 2ww

  • @flanners1 we have all the cells removed I go back Friday for my one month check up and in 2 weeks we take a look at the uterus and make sure everything looks good and they arent coming back. Good thoughts that in another 8 weeks we can get back to trying to make a baby.
Good thoughts and vibs for your TWW.
  • @katymarie101 That gave me chills when you said IF could have saved your life!  I am glad you are getting things taken care of and can hopefully get back to babymaking before you know it.

@flanners1 I know, I feel like I learn something new from all of you every time I read the boards.  There's so much to consider.  I'm hoping all is well if it wasn't brought to my attention, but then sometimes I wonder if it was intentionally not brought up.  I would hope not, but I'm a worrier.  Thank you for your kind words.  Hoping your TWW goes quickly and that you get that BFP!

  • @joneser1281 it took some time to come to think of it as a blessing and not a set back but it is nice having a few months off. DH is back in school for his MBA and the summer semester was killer and we have a trip next week. So it is nice not having to worry or stress about making plans around appointments. But I'm ready to get back to baby making, but as DH says the practicing is always fun!
  • Hello, I think I'm a little late to the party but I wanted to chime in on the endometrial lining subject. I've had a whole bunch of ultrasounds for my ovarian cysts (last u-s was a year ago) and my lining was around 11-12mm. I believe I remember one time the doctor remarking that that was pretty much perfect, at least for the point I was in my cycle. I hope this is helpful!

Hi, just wanted to update you that we finally got our BFP. Both embabies took and we are over the moon. It's early days to get carried away, but we are staying positive! Who would have thought that Viagra would help get that lining to the right place...

@katymarie101 I hope things are looking good for you and that you are able to move forward as you planned.

@joneser1281 are you still going ahead with FET in October?

@mtpbadger fingers crossed that the lining is growing as it should for your upcoming FET! Fx to you

  • I know this post is old, but wanted to chime in on thin lining since I had the same problem.  We tried the vaginal Viagra for a year and never could get my lining above a 6.  After countless canceled cycles due to thin lining, my RE did a ton of research and called around to different clinics and we tried a new protocol.  I took a drug called Trental that is used to increase blood flow.  For me this was WAY easier than the vaginal Viagra and WAY cheaper (Trental was covered by my insurance).  I took one pill in the morning and one at night.  We also tried Estrogen patches rather than vaginal estrogen and I took 1,000 units a day of Vitamin E.  Although the new protocol didn't increase my lining, it started getting the triple stripe look that he liked.  We decided to try a transfer since that was the best triple stripe look I had gotten, even though my lining was only 5.5  We got our BFP at the end of July and now I'm 14 weeks pregnant.  So there is hope for all of us with a thin lining!

  • @flanners1 - congrats on the bfp - my doc threw out the idea of vaginal viagra for me on our upcoming FET... I wasn't sure I wanted to try it but now I'm thinking maybe it's worth a shot. Thanks for updating on the outcome! <3 h&h 9 months to you. xx
