Bringing your LO/LOs to your appointments?

Do you guys bring your littles to your appointments? I have brought mine a couple of times and it does make it a bit more stressful but has been manageable. I'm just nervous about these next few appointments with cervical checks and being able to keep an eye on them- sitter has just moved. Do OBs think that it's weird to have a LO running around for that?
Also does your SO come to all your appointments? Mine hasn't been coming because I didn't feel he needed to take off work but now that it's getting closer I'm wondering if he should come meet the OB. (He has gone to the ultrasounds)

Re: Bringing your LO/LOs to your appointments?

  • I've only taken her to one so far, and she will have to come to the next one as well, which will be an ultrasound, cervical check, but luckily my husband will be there for that one too...

  • My 18 month old has been to every appointment. My 7 year old has been to 3, 2 of which were ultrasound appointments. He'll luckily be back at school before my next appointment but I'm trying to find someone to watch my youngest since I have the GBS swap and cervical check. If I can't he'll just get to be strapped into his stroller as usual and I'll just turned the stroller around (I know he's too young to understand but still makes me uncomfortable).
  • Mine has only been to 2 and they were appointments where my husband was also there. I would be stressing out having him run around the room while I was getting a check because it's not like I can jump up and run after him. Then again, if your kid can listen and sit still it would probably be nbd. Mine just doesn't listen whatsoever ;)
  • No way. I do my best to work around that. I have brought them a lot over the years but decided to have someone watch them when I have an appt

plus my appointments these days are running 2 hours long

  • I bring my three year old when she wants to go. Next week my SO is out of town so she won't have a choice.  The midwife doesn't do cervical checks unless something weird is going on. And my GBS swab isn't until the following appointment. But I could see how it could be tough to manage those things with a little asking questions and being their little busy selves.

My appointments are usually done right after work as the clinic is on my way home so no. We did however bring her to several of our IUIs and never got the weird look.
  • No, I never take my kids with me. My H doesn't come either.

  • They went to one and that was enough for me lol   Mine are also older and wouldn't bring them to the rest of my appointments due to the cervical checks.   And I think my DH has been to 2 maybe 3 appointments.

  • My son came with me to my 32 week appointment because it was just easier that time but otherwise I've been going alone. DH comes for like the first half of my appointments and any subsequent ones that include an US. You don't have to get checked if you don't want to with your kids there. I won't be getting checked at all because I just don't see the purpose.

  • @toimadness1 The stroller! You're a genius! I usually wear her (not so much lately) so it didn't even occur to me to take the stroller in. I just set her up with a snack and a show on my phone and hope she doesn't get into too much. I SAH so she comes to the majority of my appts.
  • Mine has come to a few... most recently I brought him and a tablet with Bubbleguppies downloaded on it. The nurse practitioner thought I was a genius. It was amazing, also my providers are great to interact with him and say things like "ok emmett.. Ready to listen to the baby??" So he gets attention.

  • Mine has come to a couple, but only once was it without DH there. My daughter is not quite 2 so she just sits in the stroller and eats snacks during any appointments I have. I wouldn't mind having her at the GBS swab or the cervical checks, but I'll have NSTs before them, and I can't have her there for those.

  • My son has come to a few appointments but only if my husband is there...it is a little distracting to have him there sometimes (depends on his mood) but I asked my doc office and they made it seem like no problem to bring my son and that I was even a little crazy to ask! (Previous ob had a sign that said no kids)

  • Ds came to a few of the only weight/pee/bp checks.  My ultrasounds are all an hour plus and my ob appts are all nsts so he can't come to those.

  • Cal came to a few appointments. He will be 3 Sept 6 but doesn't mind his stroller at all. I would just put him in there to make sure he wasn't running around and give him my phone or a tablet. Typically munchkins from DD were also involved haha...He did great though! Generally, I try to go while he is at preschool.

  • I've had to bring my almost 2 year old to a couple appointments and it has been very stressful.  The staff is fine with it, it inevitably happens on a busy day where we have to wait 45 minutes in the waiting room and I need a blood draw or something.

DH came to the first appointment and the 20 week anatomy scan, that's it. I've hired a sitter for most appointments, or relied on my mother in law. (The times I've had to bring LO, it was because MIL flaked at the last minute.)

  • I have no LOs but SO has been to every appointment. Tell him he doesn't have to but he wants to be there for everything. Think next pregnancy he will be different.
  • I bring DS to nearly all appointments, including one cervical check so far, and it sucks!! Haha... Mostly he is OK, but he just bounces off the walls with all the waiting and strollers can't contain him. He's almost 3. One thing that helps is that the nurses and docs at my OB are SUPER sweet with him. He gets to be a "nurse" when he comes, and they give him gloves and a band-aid or two to help take care of me. Sometimes, if he's interested, they'll let him do the Doppler for a second. Last time the OB had to use a portable US to check if baby was head down (he was breech) and she let DS hold the little computer thing and check out the baby. I was terrified he'd drop it, but she was really good with him. I think the level of stress with this kind of thing depends on how accommodating the staff is, honestly. If he's being insane, he gets to play unlimited Fruit Ninja on my phone, lol.

My daughter has come to all my appointments but 2 and I've thought it's been really good for her, she just turned 3 and was scared of the Dr when we started going and now loves to come and hear baby! I always make sure I have some snacks and toys/things to color with and she can play on my phone as a last resort but she often likes to hop up and sit on the exam table with me and visit with the dr.

Eta: hubby hasn't come to any appointments other than ultrasounds because it would mean taking a full day off work, we live in a small town and have to travel to another for maternity services but he met him my last pregnancy at 37 weeks
  • @diagonalley I was beginning to think reading through comments I was going to be the only weird one not getting cervical checks before hand! I discussed with my Dr that I found them kind of pointless and told him they'd just stress me out and he thought it was great I didn't want them, the only 2 I ever had with my daughter were while I was in labor!
  • Nope, nope, nope.  DH came to the u/s appointments only, neither of my kids have come to any of my appointments.
  • I've brought my 3 year twice and that was with DH and that was a nightmare. I couldn't imagine bringing her alone.

  • I have taken my 4 year old to some at the beginning. I stopped when I hit third trimester, there is a good chance baby will be early and I just don't need her sitting there while the doctor is all up in my lady bits.

I loved taking her at the beginning tho, she's afraid of doctors so it was great for her to get to come in and see that a doctor just talked a lot of the time!

  • I've taken my 2 year old to several when dh can't watch her (he works from home on Fridays, so that's when I tried to schedule my appointments). My last few appointments though are all on Mondays, so dd will come with me. She surprisingly does great, I sit her in the chair with her water and a bag of goldfish and she just hangs out until she'd gets to hear the heartbeat.
  • FI came to the first 2 appointments with me and he has been at almost every ultrasound,  5/8.

  • Megan324 same. DH came to the first two and the 3 ultrasounds I've had. Part of me wants him there to listen to the doctor directly so I don't have to relay info, but my appts have thankfully been short so far with longish waits before, and no reason for both of us to sit through that.
