Homemade nursery projects

Are you making something for the nursery? Sewing, knitting, crocheting, painting, sculpting, cross stitching, woodworking etc? Taking an older piece of furniture and changing it to suit your style or needs? If you are making it/adjusting it yourself I would love to see your progress and/or finished projects!

I'm making some decent progress on this blanket. I started it after I saw Cletus the fetus' heart beat, but put it down for a while. I have more motivation to finish it now that @cjs260 opened the modern cross stitch elephant pattern can of worms for me. I have like 4 patterns that I want to do for the nursery, but I'm making myself finish this blanket first!

It looks a little wonky right now, but once I have the rows done and border on it the tension from all the stitches should make it look neater and more squarish lol. It's also not color accurate at least on my screen. It's more of a medium/light grey.

edit: apparently my brain forgot that punctuation is a thing lol.

Re: Homemade nursery projects

  • @ceclarlinetlo Welcome down the cross stitch black hole!! So glad you could join me!

I absolutely love your blanket! I haven't made enough progress on my blanket yet to post, but I will post the first cross stitch for the nursery when I get home tonight!

  • Love this thread! Beautiful blanket so far @ceclarlinetlo

I haven't made anything for this baby yet. I'm more of a crafter. Not good at sewing or knitting. I made a dreamcatcher mobile for my DD that I'm in love with. I'll be making a mobile for this LO and a Christmas stocking. I'm sure there will be more.
  • Beautiful blanket you hooker! @ceclarlinetlo (I knit lol)

I have a piece of painted pallet art that I did for the nursery, and I'll make a dream catcher. I laid the floors and installed the trim and stripped the closet doors solo- does that count? ;) H has to restain the doors because I don't want to breathe that (or buy $$$ ventilators, just making him do it ha)

I'm not sure if I'll knit much for them, I go through phases of projects I like to make (soap and lotions, then knitting, then carpentry, then watercolor painting, currently in a craft lull with no energy) but there are 2 closets in their room and the smaller one is totally unnecessary, I'm SO EXCITED to turn it in to a fort/ reading nook/ something fun and adorable someday (I want to do it now but I know I should wait until I meet them and learn their personalities and what they'll want or need) that'll be full of DIY stuff I'm sure
  • @underthesea be sure to show them off once you've started! I would love to see your DD mobile if you have a picture!

  • I have lots of ideas! There is a flower mobile that I'd like to make as well as a quilt. I think that as soon as fall come around, I'll be more inclined to craft. I am also going to pain and re-cover the glider that we were gifted. I do love the cross-stitching idea - so maybe I can throw that on the list too! I love projects!

  • @TinaBelcher lol thank you :) and btw all that hard work totally counts to me!

I also go through phases - I took a big rest from crocheting when I got into cross stitching earlier this year. I would love to have a reading nook/fort for Cletus - we might only be in this house for 3 years (but there is a chance for 6 depending on where DH gets a job for his NHSC commitment) but it will definitely to be something I keep in mind on our next house hunt!

  • It's not letting me upload pics. I'll try later!
  • So excited for this thread! My husband and I love to diy, build and craft. I'm new to sewing but will hopefully get a couple cute blankets and a crib skirt done. Other than that we are planning on painting a couple of dressers to match the crib, and making most of the decor ourselves. Hopefully in the next few weeks we can start some projects :)
  • Gah, this has me excited to do a blanket for the baby! But we don't know what we're having, so I don't know what colors to do. I'm thinking of just doing white grey and teal, something that would be gender neutral.

So tell me, what is cross stitch? Is it like knitting, or crocheting?

  • @mommywesley that's me too! I'm waiting for our anatomy scan to start crocheting but I'm dying to because I'm so tired of working on my current project and I want a break from it.
PS cross stitch is a kind of embroidery
  • @canavara that I can see as cross stitch, I was confused my the OP picture looked like crochet then I thought someone said it was cross stitch, so I thought I was missing out on something with my hooks!

  • Everyone's projects look/sound so cool! I feel bad because with DD I had so much I wanted to do and this time I haven't even given it any thought. I'm working on knitting a nativity set for DD to play with in church, so that's keeping me pretty busy.  I'm telling myself that when we find out the sex I'll feel more inspired,  but honestly I have so many projects in mind for DD right now that who knows.  I really should though.

  • So I'm an artist. I attempted to make stuff for my daughter's nursery and my uterus has sucked the talent from me.

There will be plenty or my photography in the nursery.  So I guess I made that.
  • @thepax89 photography totally counts!

  • Love this thread! I have a sewing machine but I'm still learning to use it, so not sure if I will be able to get anything done for the baby on it. Maybe a burp cloth or two! I love making pallet signs though, so hoping to get something made with that!

  • @ceclarlinetlo I was nervous about how bright the pink is so that's why I did a drawer in gold to even it out. Plus, I'm about to paint a horizontal striped accent wall in her room so it'll match.

@adorebella thanks :) I'm so crafty when it comes to my own house or for friends/family, but I'd be so nervous about making items for people to order haha.

  • I love crafting and so excited for this thread! We have started refinishing my childhood toy box. I'm also planning on making some watercolor art and maybe some embroidery hoop decorations. I am a novice at sewing but I did make a plushie lock ness monster and might try my hand at a few simple projects.

  • I plan to sew a couple of blankets, burp cloths and change pads but the more I look into it the more I am realizing sewing them is going to cost me more in fabric then they are worth in the store to buy. I know it is nice to sew and things end up being better quality but I am a little disappointed in the price of fabric these days... especially here in Canada. Also there are VERY few gender neutral fabrics so that is disappointing as well

  • Everyone's projects are amazing! We're doing a space themed nursery and one of the walls will be a galaxy mural. I told my husband I could totally paint it, and he said he wasn't sure and that he would have to see some of my work before he lets me attempt it lol I might just end up making curtains or something.

@shlecka - it's from Ikea. I believe it's the "ASKVOLL". They don't have that colour anymore (although I'm in Canada and typically our selection is smaller anyways). It's an adult dresser, but work perfectly with a change pad and lamp.
