Weight at 34 weeks

I went to the Dr. today, and she was concerned about the weight that I have put on during pregnancy. Well, only after I brought it up. You see... I have been diagnosed with GD since early pregnancy. I was on insulin for a while then I moved states, saw a different dr. and got my numbers under control without insulin and with diet alone. I have logged my food intake for months. I have made sure not to eat crap and to keep my blood sugar in check. I am in no way starving myself, as I ate an entire ice cream sheet cake over the course of 2 weeks. I started out this pregnancy at 120 lbs (which is 10 lbs over my normal body weight, but I never lost IVF weight from my previous child). I am currently 130 lbs. I even lost 1.5 lbs since my last appointment. I brought this to my Drs. attention and she was like "Oh, yea, that is not good. You should have gained more weight for the health of the baby." Now, I am sort of pissed. I have done everything that they asked me to do to keep this baby healthy, in terms of blood sugar management. I have brought my weight concerns up to my GD dr. and she said "eat more avocado and nuts and stuff with good fats." Right... bc that is going to pack on the weight.

Basically, is anyone else in the same boat? Did anyone not gain very much weight this pregnancy? I feel like I have done something wrong in trying to do everything right! Also, now that I am 34 weeks, I barely have an appetite! I feel so full so quickly bc of the size of my belly! It makes me sick to eat too much.

Re: Weight at 34 weeks

  • I'm also a GD momma and am only up 5-6 lbs this pregnancy. However, I am overweight, and lost in first tri then packed it all back on in 2nd tri and have steadied out since my GD diagnosis at 28 weeks. My OB hasn't shown any concern with my weight gain, but I'm sure the fact that I had extra weight to begin with is a major factor in that.

I do agree with your OB about trying to include more healthy fats. I eat full fat cheese, lots of nuts and seeds, avacado, and beans. It hasn't helped me put on more weight, but it helps me feel like I'm not depriving the baby of calories (although she's far from small).

  • I'm a little unclear why you don't seem to believe your doc about the healthy fats? All of those foods are super calorie dense, so yes, they will help you gain weight. The fact that they're calorie dense is also good at this point in pregnancy because of the decreased space you mention-- you don't have to eat a lot to get adequate calories in.
  • I'm sorry, I should have been more clear. Healthy fats is all I've been eating for months. Tons of peanut butter on fruits and veggies, avocado toast for breakfast and snacks, whole fat cheeses and yogurts, I may have solely caused a rise in Kind bar stock. I'm constantly eating handfuls of cashews and almonds when I'm hungry. Just not putting on the weight I need.

@audi681 I think you mentioned that you have been logging your food. About how many calories do you eat a day? As long as you are taking in more calories than you burn each day, you should gain. If everything checks out calorie-wise and you still aren't gaining, I would ask your doctor to check your thyroid for hyperthyroidism. That's really the only reason I can think of for not gaining weight with extra caloric intake

I agree with@thscary to check input versus output. Are you doing any physical exercise? I logged my food in myfitnesspal and put my goal as gaining .5 lbs a week, given how much I had left to gain to get to the minimum 25 recommended. The app was linked to my Fitbit so it would change how many calories I needed each day based on my activity for the day. I was finding I had an extra 700 or so calories I needed to eat at the end of each day, which wouldn't have been there if I wasn't being active. I didn't want to stop being active so I just made an effort to eat more calorie dense stuff. you can be happy knowing you're getting the right amount of calories needed for baby and presumably it should help you gain weight if you eat what the app tells you, and you have a "weight gain" goal.

  • I started at 127 and am currently 135 and my OB has nothing negative to say about my lack of weight gain. I wouldn't worry too much about it, you are almost done at this point
  • Well I know for me I seem to gain much of my weight at the end. Usually a pound a week at this point. So maybe you are the same. You might still gain 6 more pounds.
