Who else has a SCH/bleed in uterus?

I have a small bleed in my uterus - about 1.25 cm.  Not touching baby.  I'm 9 weeks tomorrow.  Baby measures right on track and I saw him/her wiggling their little arms and legs on the US today.  2 weeks ago at my first US the bleed was 1 cm.  At that time the doctor (OB) didn't think much of it, but after my appointment today the Nurse Practitioner said I need to be on pelvic rest (no sex or strenuous activity) and come back again in another 2 weeks to see what it's done since then.  Anyone else have one?  Have your doctors been alarmed or thought NBD?

  • I don't have any personal experience with SCH, just wanted to offer some (((hugs)))

  • I had one in my first pregnancy and was on pelvic rest for the first tri. I'm snuggling said baby right now so all ended well.

  • I have a very small one-even smaller than yours. I've only spotted a couple of times. My MW treated it more like NBD and left pelvic rest up to me. She said pelvic rest would not improve my outcomes or make the baby safer, but would reduce my risk of further spotting (and worry). Though I decided against it, I have been really sick so I've only walked for exercise and had sex a few times. Hang in there! I know it's stressful, especially when reactions to SCHs seem to be all over the map for practitioners.
  • This happened to me with my son. I went in at week 5 for my 1st visit and they saw blood. Told me there was nothing I could do about it. Fast forward a week after DH and I... Well you know... And I went to the hospital for spotting. It turned out to be implantation bleeding. My son is 8 months old and I had a very healthy pregnancy.
  • My doctor saw a small one at my first ultrasound this week. I go back in two weeks for her to check. She said she wouldn't be surprised if I spotted, but so far nothing.
  • same here. the tech mentioned it but the doctor said it was NBD and I may spot. That was 3 weeks ago and so far nothing.
  • *lurking*

I was diagnosed with a large SCH (more than 50% larger than the gestational sac) at about 5.5w this pregnancy after some bleeding. I was placed on pelvic rest and followed closely with ultrasounds every week to two weeks until the 13 week mark when it was completely resolved.

    TW *loss mentioned*

After my ultrasound at 5.5w I had severe bleeding and cramping to the point where I was certain I was miscarrying (having just experienced a miscarriage three months prior). It wasn't until the next ultrasound that I was certain we were still doing okay

    end TW

I am now 23+1 with twin boys who are currently kicking the crap out of me! SCHs are super scary, and Google is not your friend! Listen to your doc and try to stay calm, as many have said the majority of SCHs resolve on their own before the second tri without causing any further issues!

I hate to be the one to be a bad news bear - but SCH can be a warning sign that something is going wrong. It was for me with my first pregnancy - but I was never told how large mine was, just that it was "small" but definitions of small vary.

EDIT to add: I will also say that retrospectively it is likely that for me the SCH was actually the start of the MC rather than a standard SCH. I started bleeding and miscarrying within a few days.

  • I also have a small one. My doctor said not to worry it's very common and it usually disappears. I don't have to go back until 12 weeks to check again. My doctor said there was only one time in her career she didn't see one go away. I also know two people who had them through their whole pregnancy and both babies were born perfect so there are good outcomes as well.

  • Lurking from O16

They saw one on my 6 week ultrasound and never even said anything to me, they were completely unconcerned. No pelvic rest or anything. At 12/13 weeks I panicked when I found quite a bit of brown blood when I wiped so I went to the ER for an ultrasound. The bleed had resolved itself and bled out. No biggie.

A SCH can potentially cause problems, but it's highly unlikely. Most resolve themselves by the end of the second trimester. Follow any precautions your doctor gives and try not to worry. Good luck!

  • Hi there- I wanted to share a positive outcome story with a SCH, because I wish I'd heard more of them when I had one and was reading up on them!  I had what my doctor described as a "moderately sized" SCH with my first pregnancy and I was really worried as I was bleeding, it was very close to the baby (doctor said it might dislodge and cause a MC), I was reading scary things online and there really wasn't a lot of info available to me about what the heck it was and what the odds of an issue with it were.  My doc didn't tell me to rest or take it easy and basically only said "we will just have to wait and see what happens."  I trusted my intuition and rested as much as I could, took it really easy at work, took a break from the gym, canceled lots of social events I'd had planned (including going to a friend's wedding in Vegas) and basically laid on the couch as soon as I got home from work and stayed resting the whole time when I was at home.  Long story short, it went away a while later (doc said a lot of times they just absorb back into your body) and I had a perfectly healthy pregnancy after that.  I totally feel your anxiety and trepidation with a SCH, and I hope it goes away quickly.  It's really good news that your SCH is on the smaller side and not near baby!
  • Hi, just lurker here...  I spotted quite a bit at the beginning of this pregnancy (actually thought it was my cycle and didn't realize I was pregnant).  Dr. found an SCH at my first ultrasound at 8 weeks.  Said the baby looked good and said it was 'very common' and usually was absorbed back into the body and put me on pelvic rest.  I pretty much stopped working out and tried to rest as much as possible. I haven't spotted at all in a couple of weeks, we have another appointment next week (will be 12 weeks) and are hoping to get the all clear.  Stay off Google and get some much deserved rest!
  • Hi all. originally thought I was a February 2017 mom but then was told i miscarried 2 weeks ago. Started the grief/healing process and told my family. Then my HCG numbers starting going up instead of down. They did another U/S and baby is 7w1d and they got heart tones! Turns out i have a "rather" large SCH and baby was too small to see on the last U/S I guess. I'm waiting for an appointment with my OB but so far this little nugget is hanging in there. It's really helpful to read all of your stories. what a rollercoaster this has been so far!
  • @kennas88 praying for you! I started bleeding a few weeks after my BFP, and was convinced it was another loss. I had never even heard of a SCH. Ultrasound the next day showed a heartbeat, and measuring 3 days small.I have 29-31 day cycles, but OB said it didn't look good and to prepare myself for another MC.
At the one week follow up the baby was growing like a champ, and they diagnosed me with a SCH that they "can't find". OB was unconcerned about the SCH. She said bed rest wouldn't hurt or help the bleeding, but that it would make me feel like I was doing something :) . Three weeks later, still spotting, baby still growing like a champ.

  • Hi ladies, sorry you are all also dealing with this. Although my drs have said it is a common thing, it still is worrisome for me! We found the bleed at my 6 weeks first ultrasound and we have been monitoring it since. (Three ultrasounds already with another tomorrow). I have only had bleeding twice and it wasn't heavy. The last ultrasound the bleed unfortunately got bigger or spread out a bit. I've been on pelvic rest since they found it and trying to relax as much as possible. Hoping we all have them resolved soon!

  • Mine got a bit smaller between 9 weeks and 11 weeks.  The doctor is calling it "resolving" and took me off pelvic rest.  Fingers crossed for good results for everyone here.

  • I was told I have a SCH on July 22 after waking up with bright red bleeding. The doc said the SCH is sitting directly above my inner cervix and if I continued to bleed and pass clots I would certainly miscarry. I was a little reassured because the little ones Hr was 161 and was moving all around. Currently no bleeding and 11w1d.
  • Today I am 11w 6d, due date 2/22.

My first bleed was at 7w. I thought for sure I was having a miscarriage.  I was out running errands and went to the restroom. When I got up to flush, the toilet was full of bright red blood. I also starting cramping really bad. I immediately went home and called my dr. I filled the toilet 3 more times with blood and big clots. I thought the worst. It was late on a Friday afternoon so the dr had me go to lab where they drew my blood. My hcg levels came back high but I had to wait until the following week for an u/s. That weekend felt like an eternity! I got my u/s and they found baby's heartbeat and baby was moving! Such a relief! But, the dr did not have any explanation for bleeding so I dismissed it as some freak incident. A few weeks went by and I started bleeding again at 10w 5d. I was sitting on the couch and a gush of blood soaked through my pants. Again, it was bright red and I filled the toilet twice and had some clots. It was accompanied by mild cramping. I went in for an u/s. The baby was doing great (yay!) but I was diagnosed with a small SCH. Today I woke up with cramps and terrible body aches. I went to the restroom and there was a toilet full of bright red blood! At this point, I am just keeping a log of my bleeding. I was told to go to ER if I soak a pad an hour for 3 hours. My dr told me to take it easy and not to have sex for 2 weeks after a bleed. Poor husband! My dr also told me she doesn't want to sugar coat it, this could result in a miscarriage. Although that is very disheartening news, I am still staying positive.

It is certainly a very frightening experience.  I never had any bleeding with my son. All we can do is stay positive!

  • @KrystynaLynelle sorry about the stress. I was convinced that the original bleed was a miscarriage too, but I've been so lucky and the bleeding never worsened and stopped after about 3 weeks. I'm sending lots of positive vibes for you! My OB said that they usually resolve themselves by 20 weeks, so hopefully it will work out soon.
