Hungry baby at night?

Baby got this nasty tummy bug about two weeks ago and ever since has been impossible to keep asleep through the night. Starting around midnight he wakes up every hour and is screaming mess until we pump him full of food. None of our normal tricks for helping him fall asleep will work. I have to nurse him every single time and at least once in the middle of the night I end up giving him oatmeal. This is very unusual - he has always gotten up at midnight, but usually was able to fall back to sleep with a little cuddling. We've started giving him a snack before bed (in addition to nursing like we used to do), and last night that at least kept him sleeping until about 2 am. We're not sure if this is just a phase, if it's related to being sick recently, or if we are creating a monster. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Re: Hungry baby at night?

  • Maybe feed him more during the day. Doc says the more they eat during the day, the longer they sleep & go with out food @ night.

  • Did he lose weight?? If I was in your shoes, I would assume that he is just trying to catch up from being sick.
  • I'm sure he did loose weight - he wasn't eating and was puking up several times a day. We are assuming that playing catch up is a big part of it, and he's still not back to eating the volume during the day that he typically ate before getting sick, so hopefully as he increases his intake more the sleep issues will start to taper off.

  • This happened to us after the stomach bug too. We had a doctors appointment shortly after and she asked if he was sleeping through the night (as she always does) and I said well since he had the stomach bug he hasn't been. She said that is normal and that he got a free pass because it does mess with their nighttime schedule/eating so give it some time. Like was said, he is probably catching up from what he lost and will get back on track when he's ready!
  • When my LO acted like she was starving in the MOTN I stopped nursing and instead gave a huge bottle of pumped milk - that way she was much fuller, got way more milk than she would just nursing - it bought me several more hours of sleep. If your LO is waking up so often do u think it would help to try a big bottle of pumped milk? Maybe tide them over for longer so at least you can rest longer in between your Lo's wakings?
  • We would if I could even pump enough to keep up with him during the day. I finally broke down yesterday and bought some formula so that if nursing doesn't satisfy him I can supplement the MOTN feedings. Then, go figure, he only woke up twice last night and was happy to nurse for just a couple minutes before wanting to go back to bed. Maybe he's on his way back to being his old self, but at least I have a backup plan now just in case.

  • I'm not sure how you feel about dairy but after my DS was sick I gave him yogurt and that helped his tummy a lot but I would recommend not cutting out MOTN feedings until your pediatrician says he's caught back up
