NBR iCloud Question

i know I need to back up my phone, but I honestly don't know how now that iCloud is a thing.  I have my phone set to where  everything automatically stores on iCloud but do I need to do more?  I bought a thumb drive that attaches to your phone and saved all my pictures, but the videos are so slow to load.

    If you hook your phone up to your computer, you can back everything up there or to the Cloud.  If you're worried about space, I pay $1 a month for 50G of cloud storage. I think it's worth it!

    I pay the $0.99/month for extra iCloud storage, but I never actively do anything to store things...  Which I'm sure means I'm doing something wrong.  LOL.

    I do back up my pictures by uploading them to my Shutterfly account through the phone app.  And I upload all my videos to YouTube and mark them as private so only I can see them unless I'm the one sharing the link.

    Oh that's smart on th YouTube!  I pay for extra cloud storage, but I didn't know if I needed to hook up to the computer and back everything up like we used to with iPhones, or if that's all covered by iCloud? I've tried to pull my pictures up by hooking my phone up to my computer, but now it only finds like 50 of my pictures. I used to do that and store everything on my external hard drive. 

    So so if I delete a photo from my phone, is it deleted from my cloud? My problem is that my phone is almost out of storage on the phone. My cloud is fine, but the phone doesn't have room. What do I do?

    So after I posted my comment, I was playing around in the settings of my phone and low and behold my crap wasn't backing up to the Cloud either.  If you go into your settings, iCloud, select the items you want included in your back ups and make sure to have your back up turned on.  It will give you the option to back your phone up now if you are connected to WiFi.  Once you turn on your back ups though, it should automatically back your stuff up.
