Re: Weekly Appointments 8*8!

  • My 20 week appointment was rescheduled from last Friday to tomorrow. I have lots of questions this time so I'm so ready to be able to ask them!

  • Sitting at the Drs office right now. Next month is the glucose test so I don't think anything crazy is going on this appointment.

  • I have my monthly appointment on Wednesday. I don't expect much to happen other than my OB writing me a letter allowing me to work from home.  I am SO excited about that!  Less excited about being weighed after being on vacation for two weeks in Europe...helloooo bread, cheese, and pastries!
  • Anatomy scan Wednesday morning! Excited, but also a bit terrified after seeing our little squish on the elective gender scan I did on Friday. He looks sooo deformed and weird! So at least I'll be able to stop worrying after the scan. Hopefully :)

  • Monthly appt on Weds. Best part of it is we'll be setting up the date for my c-section.
  • Monthly appt today.  Nothing really happened.  HB is good.  Glucose test next time.  They gave me the drink to take home and I got orange which I have heard is gross - hopefully it goes ok.
  • I have biweekly appointments/check-ins with my OB, this weeks is Wednesday. The last few times I have seen her I have had to remind her who I am. I realize she may have a lot of patients, but how many of them are having twins right now? It kind of made me mad (but I am also trying not to overreact as I realize my hormones are raging), so if she doesn't remember me this week I am going to have a talk and maybe change OB's. It's not like she has done much up to this point anyways.
  • @Amecsey Wow...you would think she would at least review your file or something! Yikes.

  • @Amecsey I feel like my current OB is the same way. You'd think they'd at least fake it by reading through your chart really quick before they walk in the room. If I weren't moving already, I'd definitely be switching. It can't hurt to start looking around now. My current OB said its hard to switch after 3rd. And I'd imagine even more so for twins.
  • Monthly appointment today, heartbeat was good. I also have the glucose test coming up, probably in a little less than a month. Not looking forward to taking a day off work to have blood drawn three times. Ugh.
  • Had my anatomy scan this morning. Everything measured well; though DD2 didn't cooperate with some measurements. So I have to go back in a month so they can measure her arms or something. I'm now super glad that I had the urology ultrasound tech take a look at the baby last week - I got a beautiful profile shot there. Today, she just wasn't having it. All of the profile shots are blurry and terrible.

On the plus side, I could feel all of her squirms as she tried to dodge the wand, so that was cool.

  • I had my 22 week check up today! Baby girl sounded great and I was measuring right on target. After the week I've had with "wow you're getting big" comments, to hear my dr say I looked awesome and LO checked out great made my day. I feel excited again! :) I'll have my glucose test in a month, bring on the overly sweet "Sunkist."
  • @1MommyRunner  Ugh, I can't believe how many people make comments on the size of our bellies. Like, hello?! It isn't appropriate when we're not pregnant, so why would it be now?!
  • I had a regular appointment this morning.  OB confirmed that everything looked great from the anatomy scan.  My mom came with me this time and she was so happy to get to hear his little heartbeat.
  • So I just went on my hospital tour--took us 10 minutes and 3 seconds to reach the hospital and park. Not bad considering the traffic!

I was very impressed with the hospital--very clean, huge labor rooms, decent sized private recovery rooms, lots of security, supports immediate skin-to-skin with baby, encourages rooming in, etc.

However, I was not impressed with the lady giving the tour. She is one of the lactation consultants, and she couldn't answer any questions. I asked her about the hospitals' stance on delayed cord clamping, and also what other pain management options they have besides epidurals (which she mentioned several times) and she would just say that "That's a medical question and I can't answer that." Really? You work in L&D and you have no idea what your hospital encourages or offers? Why the fuck are you even here? I stopped asking questions because she kept saying the same stuff, even to other people. I'm just going to have several copies of my birth wishes so everyone is on the same page.

But otherwise I feel very comfortable with the rooms, and the medical staff was nice.

  • @dmontgo You would think she would know those things... Hopefully she's a better LC than tour guide. Would your OB be knowledgable on those things? It may be something to start discussing with them now so that if your OB doesn't know either, you can find out who to go to for those answers.
  • @ashleaf2018 I've talked to her about those things before, and she is very supportive of delayed cord clamping and had mentioned IVs as pain management before, but she said to ask about those things on the hospital tour just in case she missed anything or they've developed new policies (the skin-to-skin stance is apparently a new development for them). So while I feel comfortable with my OB, I was just blown away how little this woman knew. Another lady asked about the hospital's circumcision procedures and she didn't know that either.

I'll ask my OB again about everything, but sheesh! A toaster would have been more knowledgeable than that lady.

  • @dmontgo One if the doulas I interviewed said that you can call the hospital and they can provide you with a written copy of their policies. At least the things they are very strict on. Maybe they'd know more than the tour guide?
  • @dmontgo That's what I figured; my OB's office is actually in the hospital and she operates in their network so she is very knowledgable about the hospital's practices. I know a lot of OBs practice "out of" the network of the hospital but get surgical rights there, whatever that's called. I'm butchering this a bit, lol. But anyway, because they are "outside" the hospital's network they aren't as knowledgable about everything that happens in the hospital. Your OB may still know who you should talk to since the tour guide didn't know diddly. I'm sure the tour guide is a nice person but it may be worth voicing to the hospital in some way that not having a tour guide who can answer questions is pretty ineffective. If enough people complain they may do something about training for the tours or hiring someone specifically for that purpose rather than delegating it to the LC.
  • I had my regular appointment this afternoon at 23 weeks. Everything is great and I'm still measuring a week ahead (same as at the anatomy scan). Scheduled my glucose test for next time. I also have to get the tdap vaccine then as well. Ugh definitely not looking forward to that appointment.

That's exactly what I told them. Haha but I've heard everything from "you don't even look pregnant!" (Those two got hugs) to "wow, i don't know if it's because you're drinking extra water or what but I think your belly just grew throughout the day."...no hugs were given there.

Seriously!! The day before my anatomy scan someone told me that "you don't even look big enough for twins!" which of course sent me into an irrational tailspin of what if they aren't growing well!!?? Not that this person had ANY reference to base this comment, and she wasnt trying to be mean but....bleh, the only comment you should ever make to a pregnant woman (or non-pregnant woman for that matter!!) is "you look great!" :)

  • @toller02 I totally agree!  <3
  • @Toller02
I agree. Our bodies are amazing and we look beautiful, end of story!
  • Had my anatomy scan on Monday and follow up with OB today.

No one expects Baby Girl's velamentous cord to be an issue, so that was a relief! Nor does it mean automatic c-section!! Their heart rates are audibly different (and are following the wive's tale!) Boy is 145 Girl is 160 which is kinda neat.

I asked the doc what I was measuring (fundal) just for kicks and she goes, "do you really want to know?" ha. came in at 30weeks.... ouch.

Oh and I can expect my slowly numbing hands to only continue to get worse, but she promised they wouldn't fall off :)

  • @dmontgo  - I would guess that she DOES know the answers, she just can't tell you! Since it depends so much on your individual care. The same kind of thing would happen in our baby care basics class, where we would ask very specific questions about after the birth and she would say "Well, that depends on tons of factors and it would be up to your healthcare team". She probably isn't allowed to give her "medical opinion" to people who aren't her patients. It is super annoying though!
  • My OB appointment today didn't go great. After saying my ultrasound looked perfect, when we listened to the heartbeat, we could both hear that she was skipping up a beat every 3-4 beats. So now I have to go get a high risk ultrasound. For once, Dr Google is making me feel better and seems like this is pretty common and usually resolves on it's own. My OB didn't seem too worried either but worried enough for the high risk U/S.
  • Anatomy scan today! I gave my full report in the A/S thread, but...it SEEMED like it went well. Of course the tech wouldn't tell me definitively, but she did show me the spine and the nasal bone.

  • I have a monthly appointment on Friday @ 23 weeks. I don't know if I should have any questions for the doctor at this point... what sorts of questions do you go to the doctor with? Are most of them pretty specific to what's going on with how you're feeling, or are they more general questions? I literally had an appointment with one of the OBs where he was like, "no questions? well okay then!" and I was in&out of the office within 15 minutes. I feel like that's not normal!

  • @ea301 a lot of my appts are 20 mins or less. A lot of times, I don't have questions. If I do, it's more specific to what is going on at that time. Today, for instance,  we taljed about solutions for severe pelvic pain and why my hips feels like they're being ripped apart from both sides.
  • Had my monthly appt today. Everything went well. We were supposed to schedule my c-section today, but Doc was called to hospital before we could. We should be able to schedule it withon the next week. Also, ai scheduled my hospital tour this morning.

@ea301 - my last appt (23 weeks) was super short.  Pee in a cup, blood pressure check, Doctor comes in and explains glucose test for next appt, asks if I have questions, answers my 2 questions, listens to HB on Doppler and we're done.  My questions were about my specific situation (having Braxton Hicks and when my thyroid needs to be rechecked).  I feel like I'll have more questions about delivery when it comes to that time, but there is no sense in asking now because things could change, etc.  I do need to remember to ask how long they'll let me go before inducing me so I can give work a rough estimate of when I'll definitely be out, and DH wants me to ask for a recommendation for a pediatrician (not sure why he wants me to ask my OB and not my friends but whatevs).  Can't think of any other questions I should have asked.

My OB did tell me to register for child birth classes soon if I want to take them (the ones at the hospital fill up quickly).
  • @ea301 My last couple were pretty quick in-and-outs too.  I probably spent 10 minutes with the doctor each time.  Everything's been going well, so I just don't have any questions or concerns at this point.  It does make me feel a little weird, like I should have more to say, but I guess it's good that nothing crazy is happening!
  • @mamax2 @penelope4612 @thedaint87 - thank you for the reassurance! It's good to know it's not just me! I definitely agree that it's good nothing crazy is happening and I am sure I'll have more questions once we get closer to the due date. I was just worried that I'm not asking what I should be... one of those "you don't know what you don't know" situations, yaknow? :)

  • @ea301 That's how my OB is. About five minutes to check heartbeat, glance at my records, tell me when she wants to see me next. If I have no questions, she's out of there. She's literally never told to me expect xyz soon. Or that such and such is normal symptom to pop up soon. Nothing. I'd be switching if we weren't already moving.
  • @SarahF8611 I guess I assumed because she was so comfortable talking about the hospital policies and epidurals that she would know what other options were available, but I'm a n00b.
  • Had my monthly appt yesterday. LO seems fine - I'm measuring right on track and the heartbeat was all good. But my OB mentioned that I've gained a bit more weight than he'd prefer, which just made me feel awful. I've looked online and I think I'm just at the upper limit of what's recommended, and I think he was just trying to make me aware before it became a problem, but still. It really threw me.
  • @mysteryship
I'm sorry. I think the weight gain has been the hardest part.
  • @mysteryship I made the mistake yesterday of Googling how much weight one should gain at 23 weeks. Cue freak-out session. Then I came to my senses and re-read some of these threads to calm myself down. I feel like it's some doctors' hobby to unnecessarily frighten pregnant women. They probably have some sort of pool going to see who can get the biggest reaction.
