Re: PGAL/Rainbow Baby Check-in 8/8

  • Weeks: 37w1d

What's next? (milestones, appointments, something you are looking forward to): Midwife appointment on Thursday.  As much as I'm looking forward to having this baby in my arms, I want her to wait till the end of this week at least-- I still have too much on my work to-do list!

Rant/Rave/Positive Vibes: Positive vibes to all!

    Questions?

GTKY: What's your biggest challenge right now (inside or outside babies)?

The biggest challenge for me right now is energy level because I have to keep up with my DD (who still doesn't sleep through the night regularly), get all of the little pre-baby jobs done and go to work.  I helped a friend on Saturday and took care of her two kids and DD for 9 hours and I was SO tired on Sunday as a result.  But of course, on Sunday I had to get all of our chores done, so we spent the day cleaning, shopping, cooking etc.  I'm exhausted.

  • Weeks: 37 weeks and 1 day

What's next? (milestones, appointments, something you are looking forward to): ob appointment on Thursday. DS starts 2nd grade on Wednesday.

Rant/Rave/Positive Vibes: definitely positive vibes, it's nearing the end! :)

    Questions?

GTKY: What's your biggest challenge right now (inside or outside babies)? Same here, energy. August is such a busy month. Between my DS birthday and birthday party, school starting, and baseball practices I have no extra energy to take care of baby stuff before LO comes. But hoping to take care of alot things this week. Here's hoping!!!!
  • Weeks: 39 weeks and still here!

What's next? Hopefully maybe a sweep tomorrow by OB.  Induction Friday if the hospital has beds.

Rant/Rave/Positive Vibes:  Hang in there ladies!  I'm pretty sure at this point nothing will put my into labor so I wait for the induction.

Questions?  - anyone still feel like they have a long list of to-dos before baby comes?  I realized this week that if my mom is staying with us, I should clean out a drawer and dresser top for my mom to put her stuff in DD's room.

GTKY: What's your biggest challenge right now (inside or outside babies)?  Not yelling at people!  Stop commenting, I know i'm huge!

  • @JournoGrl23 - I know how you feel about wanting to just be at the end already with a healthy baby in your arms!

I'm still scared bout the what-ifs of delivery but I'm trying to push them out of my head.

I also get what you mean about wanting a break from work. I can't imagine just sitting around my house and I've enjoyed the distraction of work, but at this point I'm ready for some "me" time.

  • @jacmkelley - Hang in there with the BFing.  My DH was good when I started and he stepped in to help with things like bottle washing and cutting up my meal so I could eat one handed etc.

  • @jacmkelley I hear you on the lonely nights!  I remember being so exhausted and even resentful with DD when I was up all night every night.  It is so hard at the beginning.

  • Yesss to enjoying newborn phase more the second time around! I have felt the same way. I can't put him down (which is bad lol) but I love just staring at him and smelling him, it all happens so quickly and then it's over! I'm soaking up this baby love while its here and before I have to go back to work!
  • Sorry for the feeding difficulties, @bananers!  The unpredictability of it all must be so frustrating.

  • @ThisisNumber3 I keep going over the what ifs too! Not just delivery, but also labor before I get to the hospital and every risk and complication through the whole process as well as the raised risk of being overdue, which looks like will happen for me. I just want her here so I can stop worrying. Although then I imagine the worrying will never stop!
  • Weeks:
    5 days!

What's next? (milestones, appointments, something you are looking forward to):
We had her first pediatrician appointment today. She's jaundice so we had to go have her levels checked. We'll be back tomorrow to have them checked again. Then we get to see the pediatrician again on Friday!

    Rant/Rave/Positive Vibes:
Ladies who haven't met their babies yet, you're almost there! You've got this!

    Questions?

GTKY: What's your biggest challenge right now (inside or outside babies)?
Lack of sleep! I've started falling asleep while sitting in the car, on the couch, talking to DH. Today in the pediatrician's waiting room I started talking jibberish about hugging cake? DD just does NOT want to sleep at night and I can't keep up!
  • Weeks:  12 days

What's next? (milestones, appointments, something you are looking forward to):  pediatrician weigh-in tomorrow to see if we can stop supplementing.

Rant/Rave/Positive Vibes:  love getting to snuggle my little guy!  It has also been so helpful having my mother out, I am a little worried how we will do it once she heads home.

Questions?  Anyone else's little one roll onto their side in their bassinet? We put him down on his back and he immediately rolls onto his side.

GTKY: What's your biggest challenge right now (inside or outside babies)?  For me, the bleeding from my c-section incision. It has limited my mobility and causes me a lot of pain.

I also find I worry a lot about his breathing after our NICU stay, and he has been stuffy.
  • @bananers Yay baby E! That's very exciting. I'll be sending hungry vibes his way! I sure hope that he gets to eating super quick. Hope you're doing well, I'm sure you're sooo ready to get everyone home and together. Sounds sooo close!
  • Thinking of you @lgem4, I just read your birth story. I hope your stay is short in the NICU!

  • Thinking of you, @lgem4! Did you know she had a cleft palate ahead of time? I don't remember hearing about that before. Surprised they could see the enlarged tongue but didn't catch that! I hope your NICU stay is short -- feel free to ping me if you ever want to talk or need help navigating! We've sort of achieved NICU veteran status at this point!

  • @lgem4 I hope you find a good routine soon!  I did continue my prenatal while BFing-- I think it is recommended, since BFing takes a huge amount of energy and nutrients.

@liljabee mine rolls to one side all the time even though we lay her head flat. Pediatrician didn't seem concerned when she asked us if baby A does that on her own. We try to turn her so she's on her back but minutes later, she's on her side again.

And I also constantly check in on her breathing too as she was in the NICU for that primarily. Anytime her grunts or cries sound "wet" or if she's too quiet, I wake myself up to check so I'm not really in deep sleep.

@lgem4 sending positive vibes to you and your fam hoping her NICU stay is short.

@bananers oh baby E! Continuing to pray and hope he gets feeding down soon.

Trapped in box- This!! Since DS was in the nicu for breathing and we are first time parents, it makes it hard for me to sleep and my dh doesn't like hearing the baby have hiccups because they sometimes sounds like he's struggling.

  • Weeks: Jasper will be 2 weeks on Friday!

What's next? (milestones, appointments, something you are looking forward to): Trying to figure out whether to breastfeed, or bottle feed breast milk... we're struggling with breastfeeding to the point that it makes me feel unstable, and I don't really feel the special bond from breastfeeding that I hear a lot of moms do, but my midwife says I won't make it pumping and I'll eventually have to supplement with formula. Which I don't want, but I also don't think is necessarily true.

Rant/Rave/Positive Vibes: Happy to be able to hold him, but baby blues are so difficult.

    Questions?

GTKY: What's your biggest challenge right now (inside or outside babies)? So, his bilirubin check before we left the hospital came back a TEENSY bit high. But they wanted us to follow up and get it checked again after discharge and talk to our ped. about it. Since the ped assigned to him at the hospital ordered the labs, the results got sent to her, even though we registered our pediatrician with him before we left the hospital. Anyway, they suggested to get it done before noon so they'd have time to get the results sent over before offices closed and that way we'd know before the end of the day. We did that, got the results, and discussed them with his pediatrician on Tuesday. He wanted us to get his levels checked again Thursday or Friday. He said they weren't particularly high, but he was very jaundice. We go Thursday, by 11 am, and later called the ped to see if they had recieved the results. Nope! Called the hospital on Friday, and they claimed they couldn't tell us if they had released the results to his pediatrician. Okay...so we call the doc. Still no results. The weekend comes, then Monday we call the doc again. Nothing. I'm ready to bitch out everybody in this hospital. We go in Tuesday for our appointment, and I had to fill out paperwork to get them to send the results, and we still didn't get them back before our appointment was over! I could have screamed. However, doc said his jaundice was so much better, he wasn't worried. So much for having my baby poked and squished for nothing... just pissed that they couldn't get newborn blood work sent to a doctor in a reasonable time?? Sorry for the long story!

  • @Knottie1442786653 Sorry to hear you are struggling with breastfeeding!  Have you had him checked for lip and tongue ties?  Those can make all the difference in a successful/not painful latch.  A lot of doctors, nurses and lactation consultants don't check for them.

I took a long time to attach to my DD after giving birth and it wasn't until months later that I felt a bond/connection through breastfeeding.  Baby blues and PPD/PPA are incredibly difficult.  I found sleep deprivation was my number one trigger-- it is really tough, but try to get as much rest as you can.  Would it be possible for you to have a 24 hour "nurse-in" with him?  Basically, you just spend 24 hours in bed together, skin-to-skin, breastfeeding, snacking and sleeping.  Maybe that would help with forming a bond and getting you some rest?

  • @Fremdschamen They said he had a tongue tie, but that it was non-restrictive. It's not that his latch is bad, it's actually great... but he gets frustrated with breastfeeding easily. If he gets too hungry before we start to feed him, he'll just scream at the breast no matter how long I try to get him to latch. But we never know when he's going to want to eat, since with breastfeeding you can't know how much milk they're getting. It takes usually 15-20 minutes to get him to calm down at the times when I stick with BFing rather than switching to bottle. Then he seems to eat for five minutes and pass out. I get scared that he's not eating enough. A nurse-in  I would definitely be willing to try! I never want him to have formula if I can avoid it, so I just want this work..
  • @Knottie1442786653 my LO sometimes gers so hungry he just wails at the breast as well. I have found 2 strategies that help. OnE is to let him suck on my finger for a moment, it seems to remind him to put his tongue down and latch. The other is to give about 10 mL of pumped milk via a bottle, then switch to the breast. It seems to settle him enough to take the breast. We use a bottle that requires he suck in s way similar to a latch which also seems to help.

I has wanted to EBF but he needed supplements because of his glucose. It has been a process finding ways to make it work for us.
  • Hi mamas!

@lgem4 I have been thinking of you and I hope you getgood news with your plan.
@bananers I read your blog everyday and I am happy to hear you are nearing the end. I am so inspired by your strength and your beautiful writing.

Dorothy is 1 week old today and I can't believe it. Stop growing!
when we had our 1st daughter I struggled so badly with Breastfeeding I just figured that it work even if it was a lot of work. After  weeks of trying, my milk never came in and I decided to stop trying. It was so emotional but at that moment I started to enjoy my mat leave and my baby.

This his time around my doc told me to try it and it could be different and easier...so I did. Well when we got home, all the struggles came back along with all the negative emotions. Rather than go through the struggle again, we went right to formula. I have such a supportive DH and doc but it was still hard. I feel comfortable with the fact that she did get get the colostrum.

I am sending out positive vibes to everyone!!

  • Weeks: 39

What's next? (milestones, appointments, something you are looking forward to): Appointment on Monday, but have been to the doctor twice this week due to protein in my urine, slightly elevated BP and then having to collect my urine for 24 hours after that. My next appointment is Monday, and I hope if things are still borderline, we can just go ahead and induce.

Rant/Rave/Positive Vibes: Have a cold, long story as to how I contracted it but I just keep hoping I will get some relief from the physical symptoms of the pregnancy and the cold because between the two, I feel like a pregnant zombie due to sleep deprivation.

    Questions?

GTKY: What's your biggest challenge right now (inside or outside babies)? I am just trying to remain positive about still being pregnant. I worry every time I don't feel movement for awhile and that maybe I suddenly have pre-eclampsia and we won't catch it in time and it will harm the baby. Seems like my PGAL brain is back in full force.
Congrats to all the PGAL mommas out there who have given birth and to those who haven't, FX things continue to go smoothly!
  • @mksfav my PGAL brain is back in full force too! I've been extra panicky lately about movement, especially since it's changed with her getting bigger. I hope you feel better soon!
  • @lgem4 I'm so sorry you're dealing with all this but so thankful things are looking good so far!!

  • @lgem4 I'm also sorry you're dealing with this! I hope her surgery and the rest of her tests go well so you can bring her home soon!
  • Thanks @JournoGrl23! Glad to know I'm not the only one!
@Igem4 that is a lot to deal with, hopefully you get some better answers and get to take baby home shortly. You'll be in my thoughts!
  • @lgem4 I am saying my prayers for you that you get to bring you LO home soon
  • @lgem4 that must be a lot to handle, but I'm glad you're getting some answers. I hope you get to bring your little girl home soon!

The MRI results came back good, no cancer! They will still biopsy but it shouldn't need to removed. If anything they may take some out when she has her surgery to fix the cleft palate but that won't be until 12 months old. So fx her recovery from Monday's surgery goes and well and we go home in a week.
Yay!!!!! This is such awesome news. I've got my FX!
