  • "The Black Widow" by Daniel Silva
  • Finnikin of the Rock, the first book of the Lumatere Chronicles by Melina Marchetta! I also just finished The Birth Partner, which was excellent. I'm excited for H to read it and know how to support me in labor. But it was even an informative read for myself.

  • I don't know the last time I actually finished a book, but I just borrowed Room from my sister and I'm pretty excited to read it!
  • @jennbaylor12 I'm reading Me Before You right now! It's so good, I can't stop :)

I recently read The Mountain Between Us. Bring your tissues for that one.
  • If you have an e-reader, I suggest subscribing to bookbub.com. You can choose your genre preferences, and every day you get an e-mail with e-book deals of the day from Amazon, B&N, etc. Sometimes there are free books, some for $1, sometimes bestsellers for $2, sometimes even trilogies or series. But be warned - it's dangerous! I've spent more than I should admit. But I have a Nook library of like 30 books to read and almost 50 I've already read (huge reader) just since I signed up. It's amazing.
  • I was on vacation this past week, so I've recently finished the new Harry Potter (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), Big Little Lies, Black Eyed Susans, and I'm currently reading Bringing Up Bebe.

  • I largely read fantasy, and right now i'm reading HP & the Cursed Child, but took a break from reading the Dark is Rising series when it came out so I'll pick that as soon as I finish up the new HP.

  • @slartybartfast - it was ok.  Fun to read another story about old "friends" but the fact that it's a play script leaves out a lot of imagery/detail that exist in novels and that was a pretty big part of the HP series.  The plot was fairly interesting.  It was a fast read.
  • @PensiveCrayon - I'm really liking it so far.  Debating having DH read it as well.
  • Gracelin O'Malley trilogy

Broken Angels by Gemma Liviero (WWII novel) was realllllyyyy good!!

  • Like others I just read the new HP play. In a day. It was definitely a fast (but enjoyable!) read. I interrupted another series called Wicked to read HP so I'll go back to it. It's ok. I am basically just reading now to finish what I've started. From here I want to also read Me Without You and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. I haven't and a good friend says it's her favorite!

I did one of those Goodreads reading challenges and decided to shoot for 100 in a year (reading is my favorite). I've been reading just about anything and everything. I've got 90/100 under my belt at this point. I was sure I was going to go way over my goal but pregnancy brain is starting to kick in and now I'm distractedly worrying about registries, circumcision, and sleep sacks.

Out of the group I've read in 2016, some honorable mentions are The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater, Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin, and the Isabel Dalhousie books by Alexander McCall Smith (I still have some in that series to read). I also read a lot of C.S. Lewis in January and enjoyed Surprised by Joy so much. I was disappointed it didn't continue through the rest of his life.

Currently reading: Codependent No More (thanks for the recommendation @dmontgo ) by Melody Beattie and Dawn at Emberwilde by Sarah E. Ladd.

Next in line is HP and the Cursed Child and Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert. I should probably also throw in some pregnancy and childbirth books in the mix soon after that.

  • I usually don't have a ton of time for leisure reading, but with the current political climate (not going to comment in any direction), I'm diving into books to avoid my FB newsfeed haha. It seems to be working thus far. Ironically, I've been reading a lot of dystopian fiction. I read the Gone series (very Stephen King-ish), the Partials series (really enjoyed that one), and the Matched series (kind of boring). Now I'm reading The Maze Runner series, which I'm enjoying far more than the movies, which I thought were pretty mediocre. I'm pleasantly surprised to discover that the books are entirely different from the movies. I've also got the new HP book lined up to read after I finish these books.

  • @LinziLoo09 I just finished the first Maze Runner last month! Not the greatest writing in the world (and I only say that because YA writing is what I got my masters in), but I couldn't put the book down, so that's definitely something. I'm excited to read the others.

  • I agree on the writing @PensiveCrayon. But I read a lot of self-published authors, so I don't often expect fantastic writing in this genre. I enjoyed the Scorch Trials a lot, and I'm in the middle of the Death Code now. Much better than I expected based on those crappy, confusing movies.

  • I'm 2/3rds through the new HP. Trying to savor it but its such a quick read!

They are also releasing the script for the new Fantastic Beasts (part 1) movie in November (I think when/right after the movie is released). Don't know how much I'll want to read it after seeing the movie, but might be tempted anyway...
  • @Linziloo09 - Maze Runner series is next on my series list. I was very disappointed in the Matched series, it had such potential! I am currently rereading The Chemical Garden trilogy. I've read the first two but not the last one and wanted a refresher. I feel like I've been in a YA rut the last few months.

  • Try the Partials series @cayaylonglegs . I really enjoyed that one and thought it brought up a lot of really interesting points about human rights and environmentalism that aren't always included in these types of books. And seriously, Matched was super boring. I can't believe it got such good reviews. I keep hearing good things about Delirium, but it looks more boring than Matched. I can't deal when the entire plot is about teen romance...give me the action please.

  • @cayaylonglegs Have you read anything by Libba Bray? I love anything and everything she writes. And I'm actually going to be attending a writing workshop led by her in October, which is terribly intimidating! I'd start with the Diviner series. It's awfully creepy and wonderful.

Other YA I love: Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta, anything by Rainbow Rowell (I'd start with Fangirl), and uh...I'll have to keep thinking.

  • @LinziLoo09 - I will look into the Partials series!! Delirium has been on my to read list for awhile now but the synopsis kinda reminded me of the Divergent series and don't even get me started on how disappointed I was by the end.

@PensiveCrayon - I'll be honest I started A Great and Terrible Beauty but just could not get into it. I'm willing to try the Diviner series though. That's really awesome that you are going to one of her workshops! Let me know how it goes!

Do any of you use Goodreads? It's probably my favorite app.

  • @cayaylonglegs Yes--that's exactly why I didn't recommend that series! It's the first thing she wrote, and is a bit slower than some of her other stuff. Even I had trouble reading it...I was just not that into the whole Realms thing. (If you even made it that far, haha!)

  • Guide to Childbirth, about to start The Birth Partner, some self help stuff about my childhood, Yes, Please by Amy Poehler, Love and Logic parenting book and the Happiest Baby in the Block,  till I left it at my grandma's house. I'm really craving some fiction right now, waiting for Gillian Flynn to publish another.

@PensiveCrayon I got my degree in creative writing, too - not YA, but still. Fun to see other writers around :) Where do you find your workshops? I look on the writers and poets site for contests and all that and my college town was a huge network of writers, but where I live now is woefully un-literary.

  • @SaraRose83 This one is at a writing retreat center led by a grad of the program who posted it to Facebook. I had to apply for it, and am paying $$$! (It's actually my birthday gift from my MIL) Sadly, I haven't really
found a writing group I've clicked with here where I live. I went to a SCBWI meeting and it was mostly about how to get published and not craft. :/

  • @LinziLoo09 the Delirium series was just ok to me, not really worth the read as far as new and interesting plot lines.
  • Guilty pleasure: the Poldark series (on book 6)
    Just starting: "underground airlines"

  • @PensiveCrayon Oh, cool! I need to be better about doing a writing retreat once a year or something for my vacation. Yeah, I'm finding it really hard also to find writing groups in my area that are into workshopping a piece. But honestly it's hard to find writing groups in my area in general!

  • I've been on a YA binge these last few months. I'm currently finishing The Fate of Ten, which is the second to last book in the Lorien Legacies.  I'm reading as a refresher before buying the last book which is out now.

I agree that Delirium and Matched weren't my favorite YA trilogies but were a fast read so if you are bored, it may be worth picking up.

@Cayaylonglegs I agree- the ending on the Divergent series was so disappointing.  My husband asked if he should finish the series and I said no.

  • I read a lot of historical romances (like a lot).  So if anyone ever wants to chat about Sarah MacLean, Julia Quinn, Lisa Kleypas, Eloisa James etc - I'm your girl.  I read a lot of regular fiction as well, but I travel a lot and romances are perfect for my kindle on planes!

I'm also really like detective/mysteries - especially series!  So if anyone has suggestions on that front - I'm listening.  I read a lot of Jeffrey Deaver, Tana French, and John Sanford

  • I am so overwhelmed with all these books you guys have mentioned, I may have to stop re reading Harry Potter and pick some stuff up! The librarian at school liked the Matched series so I need to pick that up before school starts so we can talk about it at least.

@LinziLoo09 and @PensiveCrayon I also loved the Maze Runner series even though the writing was meh. Never saw the movies sounds like thats a good thing though!

Also found another UO for this thread...I liked Divergent! I didn't really like Tris's character, but thought it was pretty good!

I'll probably read my school library books before the year starts back and then try to keep trucking on the Wheel of Time.

    Sad, I know.
  • @SmashJam a lot of people didn't enjoy the Matched series, but I actually did (30), and so did my sister (17). I liked it a lot actually.

  • @caseyewhitaker I was just listening to a podcast extolling its virtues! I'm convinced that it needs to be my next read, as soon as I finish the Lumatere Chronicles. And, ah, not to toot my own horn or anything but Maggie S. was just the visiting reader and gave a lecture at my MFA program this summer. (I graduated last summer, so I didn't get to see her. BUT! I did get to see the woman who wrote the Matched series come in as a student, haha. She seems very nice :))
