I think most baby outfits with the cutesy sayings like "mommy' shopping buddy" or "Daddy's little slugger" are tacky. Yes, we received several as gifts for DS, and yes, I put them on him and sent a thank you note, but internally cringed when we received one

@WildRumpus I agree. "I have the best aunt ever" "grandpa's favorite" or whatever, I perversely hate them all. I think I will extend that to saying that I personally hate children's clothes in general that have messages on them. To each their own though. If I found some bibs that had Hogwarts houses on them though...I'd buy that.
Making sure dd's bday feels special even though it'll be in the middle of holiday season doesn't even make like my top 1000 priorities as a parent. It just seems so trivial compared to the rest of the job as parent
@caseyewhitaker Yes! I don't mind graphic tees and some message tees for him, because some of those are just fun, but not EVERY item of clothing needs to say something. But his "Straight Outta Timeout Shirt"? Accurate.

@slartybartfast It's probably not that big of a deal in the long run, you're right. My husband is born on the 17th of December, his dad on the 28th, he's got a grandfather and cousin in this mix too with almost Christmas birthdays (isn't it weird how families somehow manage to do this?).
Needless to say I've gotten a lot of advice on how to make a December birthday special. I think at least while they're young I'm just going to have a summer half-birthday too so they'll have something to look forward to another time of the year even if it's just "today is your half birthday, we can do whatever you want today." My husband is supportive of this idea because he knows what it feels like to pick a present under the tree for your birthday instead of your birthday getting to be its own event. 1st world problems, I know. But it's also for selfish reasons too - I find the Christmas season stressful enough* without always fretting if DH and and now Bean are having amazing birthdays too.
*A couple of you were saying that giving gifts is your love language and I am so jealous of that. Gifting is anxiety forming for me. I spend a lot of time worrying it's not a good enough gift, did I spend enough, not knowing what to get, etc. It generally ruins my Christmas spirit. I decided last year even before I got pregnant that I was going to have all my gifts purchased before December 1st this year so it didn't kill my previous love of Christmastime like it does now. Now that I'm pregnant I've pushed back that deadline to mid November they all have to be bought at the very latest. I plan to start in October. I'm determined to have some Christmas cheer even if I am 9months pregnant, dang it!
@caseyewhitaker I do the same thing with Christmas every year, and it has completely changed the holiday season for the better for me. I'm already creating a gift list, and plan to be done and gifts wrapped by December 1st. You seem to get anxious easily (like me!) , so I can't recommend this strategy enough!
PS: gift giving is my LL, but I struggle with verbalizing compliments and squishy feelings. Has gotten a lot, LOT better, but it can sometimes cause me a great deal of anxiety!
@dmontgo I am an easily anxious person and an excessive worrier to boot. It's just who I am. Fortunately, I'm loved by the people in my life in spite of it.
I agree with disliking gift giving. It's so hard. FI agrees so (shocking!) we don't exchange gifts. Like ever. No Christmas, birthdays, or anniversaries. We usually take the holiday as time to get something new for the house (tv, couch, etc). Or to go do something like a small trip. Or something we really don't do anything at all. And I am perfectly ok with that.
Ladies who hate gift giving - in the future you can make a scrapbook. That is what we did last year. Birth - 4 months. Everyone loves it. I did it all on shutterfly, and had a couple discounts so it was like $350 for the 8 books. Then we just took L's hand and foot and left a stamp of each on the inside cover with 'merry Christmas L'. Easiest presents ever. They can even be individually shipped. My UO is that I like most of the baby clothes with sayings. L has a ton of them, and it is adorable to see him in them. Now, that being said, his 'daddies future linebacker' one will definitely be worn by E when she gets here. I played football in high school, and will encourage her to try at least little league.

UO - I am one who wants to make sure our son knows his birthday is special, even with everything else going on in December. If he is born near his due date (December 12), one of his cousin's birthdays is a week before (December 5). And then, the son of one of DH's cousins has a birthday in between that (December 7). Their family invites everyone to birthday celebrations... so we'll have those to work around. My SIL mentioned combining parties, and I'm like, um... no. Maybe when he gets older, but to have the first few years (yes, he won't remember some of these) celebrated with someone else - I just don't think it's fair to him. As this is my parent's first grandchild, I'd like to let them celebrate his birthday without it also not being an event for someone else. Maybe that's me. As I got older, I shared family birthday parties with my sister (we were 3 years and a week a part), but we never had themes and usually got our own cake. These parties would be themed (and always have been), and probably more so for the older vs. younger.
I love celebrating birthdays, so this is why it's important to me for him to have his own.
As for gifts... we'll just split what we give for birthday/Christmas... just like we do with that nephew. Or, I may do the "thing you need, thing you want, thing to read, thing to wear" type present for Christmas and birthday can be a little bit more. He will be spoiled by my parents/sister for sure regardless, and I am sure my in-laws will do some too (their 5th grandkid).
UO - I don't mind those shirts with sayings... some are cute, and yes... some are awful. Instead of "I get my looks from my dad" ones, I want to find some cheesy ones related to movies, books, TV shows that I have pinned on Pinterest. Like Harry Potter, Friends, A Christmas Story, etc. Those crack me up!!

I seem to be breaking the theme of gifts and baby clothes, but I just heard this and knew it was my UO. I loathe the phrase "it is what it is." Like I want to hit you if you say it. I think this is mostly a result of my mom seriously overusing it and essentially saying it every other sentence. I completely understand that there are things we cannot control in life, but this phrase just comes across as passive complacency. I think I'm going to start saying "it isn't what it is" just to screw with people.
I also hate most of the clothing with sayings. I did see a onsie that says "Merry Christmas ya filthy animal" and I'll probably get that one I have due 12/14 and I hope she will be here before xmas!! I also saw a "oh deer I'm here" one which I'm thinking of getting for the newborn stage, which is cheesy but maybe i can pull it off as ironic? Something like daddy's little slugger or anything with princess on it will be graciously thanked for, a picture taken and sent to the gifter, and then donated to goodwill.
We just buy presents for our 8 nieces and nephews at this point. Sometimes my family does a secret santa which is always fun too. But to buy presents for everyone would just be insane. This year DH and I agreed we won't do xmas presents to each other because Bella is the best present ever. Other years we have done stuff like renovate a room or go on a trip but we aren't going anywhere until Bella is old enough to be left with her grandparents for a week - I am thinking for our 10th anniversary in January 2018!
My OU is that I don't need to be treated like I am disabled. I am still stronger than a lot of non-pregnant people and don't like to be babied, unless what I am getting out of is gross or annoying at the moment, and then it is OK
Me: 38, DH: 36 Married Jan 2008 DD Baby Bells born Dec 2016 5 lbs, 12 oz, 18" so in love Due with #2 Baby Arya EDD February 2020
@LinziLoo09 count me in on the meaningless sayings hatred. My husband has one right now that he ties on to everything, "so there ya go." Where am I going? What does that even mean? Annoys me.
It depends on the saying on the clothes for me. I would get clothes pertaining to sports and say Mommy or Daddy's All-Star if it pertained to baseball or football because DH and I are fans and it's how we'll raise our kids. Fishing buddy, yes, because we love going fishing. Boys clothes that say Your girlfriend is checking me out and Hunk are just no. Same with girl clothes that say Too Cute for whatever. I agree with the My Mom Doesn't Want Your Advice one, though I want.
I'm also a December baby (8th). DH is the 16th. Most of our friends have December birthdays(the 2, 5, 7, 9, 10, 19 and 28). Our niece and nephew have December birthdays (the 11th and 12th). We have one huge party for the adults and include the kids because it makes them feel good, but the kids get their own parties. They're growing up now (10 and 9 almost!) so they probably won't have parties much longer. But we always gt them birthday presents and Christmas presents. That's how it was done for me and that's how it was done for DH. That's how we'll do it for Squish. I hate combining birthdays with holidays, and combining kid birthdays. Your birthday is YOUR day. As you get older, yeah it's ok to combine for time and money purposes. Try timing and having 8 parties in the span of a month where there are also holiday parties!

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaas this. Today I had to check the tire pressure of my tires. I got some crazy responses to the NERVE of me doing something so PHYSICAL at 5+ months pregnant. *eye roll* I mean, I didn't jack the MFer up and change the tires, I just squatted and checked them with a little tool. Lay off me, little tools!
I'm so annoyed with how much pink there is with girls clothes. I really don't like pink. I mean, I own a couple of clothing items that are pink...but I literally mean like 2 things. The little girls section of every store looks like someone dumped peto bismol all over it and called it good. Can I get some cute purple, red, blue, green, teal, etc?! Maybe this is part of the reason I was wanting boys...
I hate pink, and think there is too much pink in little girls clothes.
Edit:
I'm a December baby too! December 14th. When we first got pregnant I thought I'd probably be having a baby on my birthday lol. But with twins, they'll probably come weeks before then
LOVE leggings - though I only wear them with something covering my butt/crotch. But especially during pregnancy. Man give me all of the billowy shirts/sweaters over some stretchy leggings. I would never survive this pregnancy ordeal without them.

I mean, I will totally do this in the Fall. Pregnancy is a good enough reason, even though I'm not a general leggings fan. Can't wait until it's cool enough for Fall clothes!!!!
@brittnic86 SO much agree with this. I'm a huge "gender-neutral" freak, but every now and then I wanted something with maybe a little frill on it for my baby girls and I could only ever find in-your-face pink frills on frills (or mean-girl sayings. seriously wth? my baby is 3 months old, not a diva). It was disheartening to say the least. I did have some luck on ebay with finding a few purple or teal things but mostly it was white with flowers or hearts. I eventually gave up and just bought "boy" clothing and agreed with everyone who told me my girls were so handsome (because they are). If it makes you feel better, it gets a LOT better the bigger/older they get so there is hope for the future
@mom2fallbabies right! I don't necessarily mind ruffles and bows...but the pink, flowers, and hearts are making me gag. SIL bought us two batman onesies with pink stars on them, with matching batman shoes. I think that's okay, they're mostly black and yellow. DH loves batman lol.
@leksiL YES YES YES to being treated like we're disabled. My MIL is the worst. She wouldn't let me handle my own bags at the airport, and when I left to go back home and was weighing my bag she told me she's "uncomfortable" with me lifting it.
Guess what? I'm not. So I'm gonna effing lift it.
@slartybartfast and @dmontgo I would love to pop on some leggings right now, but I live in Las Vegas, so I'm gonna have to wait until at least October and probably November. Booooooo.

@phoenix870509 I am not saying that we will not have any sports jerseys. Little Bella will probably be inundated with Patriots and Red Sox gear from Day #1. (I am going to try to sneak some Orioles stuff in there, but not the Ravens because I had a falling out with them).

@leksiL same here, except Yankees and Rays. I'm a huge Yankees fan, DH roots for the Rays and can't stand the Yankees. He's threatening to buy Red Sox gear, which will promptly be burned. But I'm getting a onsie made that will say Tie Breaker and have the Yankees and Rays emblems on it. Watch, this kid will root for the Mets!
What I meant was as for when they're really young clothes that pertain to things the parents like are fine. When they get old enough to make their own choices it's another thing. So we'll put Squish in sports related things, have clothes that say All Star with baseball bats or footballs, and clothes that pertain to things DH and I like that we will raise Squish around. If they grow up not liking it, that's their choice.

I only wear leggings if the top (or a tonic/dress) FULLY covers my butt. And, that's like 2 tops/shirt dresses in my whole closet so I don't wear mine too much. I bought maternity leggings, but have yet to find a top to wear with it that covers the butt... or haven't actively looked hard enough.

I actually love pink and glitter and frills. Hopefully we'll have a girl at some point so I get to indulge in some of that. FI and I are sooo picky about boy clothes. Girl clothes, we think everything is cute, and boy clothes, we leave the store with maybe 2 things because we hated everything else. The first time I took FI baby clothes shopping he was like, "Wow, I see what you mean about there being nothing for the boys. We'll have to keep all the boy stuff we get and never get rid of it because it'll be so hard to find anything if we have another boy. Maybe we can have a girl next time." Lol love my FI!

It really sucks that there is so much more girl stuff everywhere than boy stuff! This used to bug me to no end when DS was a little and I was looking for clothes. There would be, like, 25 girls' outfits and 2 for boys. Not cool.

Even warmer purple/pinks like fuchsia and mauve. I love love love shopping for boy clothes, such cute things!! I love me some pink baby clothing and onesies with writing on them. I got some cute ones as gifts. But Its always nice to have a variety of clothing. I got a lot of long sleeve multi colored onesies on sale at carters. I'm not a fan of giant bows/flowers on baby girls. I feel like it just takes away from their cuteness.
Sooo this my UO. We just got an invitation for a 5 years old birthday (husbands best friends kid) and they registered for gifts. Seriously at the bottom it says "Liam is registered at Toys R us." When did people start registering for birthday gifts?! Did I miss this?! Shouldn't you be happy with whatever you got?! I'm really just shocked by this whole idea.

Wut. A 5th bday kids registry? This makes me ragey. Just to spite it Id do the ole donation in your honor in lieu of gift. To like a shelter or something

@phoenix870509 I am not saying that we will not have any sports jerseys. Little Bella will probably be inundated with Patriots and Red Sox gear from Day #1. (I am going to try to sneak some Orioles stuff in there, but not the Ravens because I had a falling out with them).

I love love love shopping for boy clothes, such cute things!! I've had the best time dressing DS
