Naptime in the swing

Hey ladies. I normally don't post much, but the swing has been stressing me out lately and have to ask.

LO is 15 weeks, and only naps in the swing. She is a great night time sleeper in her crib, but naptime is totally different and I can't get her to sleep in the crib, pack n play, or anywhere else. She will sometimes sleep for a short time on someone, but wakes up the second we try to put her down.  I've tried going on to soothe her, picking her up and putting her back in, sitting in the room with her... but she ends up crying the entire time and completely skipping her nap. I'm just worried that she'll always be a bad napper, and want to break any bad habits.
Has anyone had any success getting their LO to transition out of the swing? Is this the right age? Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated!!

Re: Naptime in the swing

  • I know this is weird and my guy is only one week older, but week 13-15 were terrible for naps for us!! Terrible! Actually up until this week were terrible! He fought and fought and fought me!!!! I have been doing nothing different, but our first two naps go off without a hitch! He still refuses to take the last one even though he is tired.
keep at it, perhaps it's an age thing?

  • No help here, as LO is not a napper...she likes to nap in the swing, car seat, stroller, Ergo...anyplace but her crib too!  Another mom on here posted that either you have a good sleeper or your don't...I have a good night sleeper, just not a good napper!

I've found that I get even more stressed out about LO's habits when I'm reading all the books that tell me what I'm doing wrong...so again, no advice here but hopefully you find something that works!

Ds is 18 weeks and still takes his long nap in the swing. The rest are in the car seat or rnp. We haven't transitioned yet to the crib yet due to reflux but will soon. The swing is the only place he will take a long nap and he gets super irritable if he doesn't get good sleep. I feel like eventually he will get better at napping, but whatever gets him the sleep he needs is fine now. DS1 napped in a bouncy seat up until 7/8 months and was a great napper and didn't have any issues. Some babies just take longer to get used to taking good naps without help.  I would say as long as they aren't getting all their sleep in a swing, then no worries.
As far as tips to transition, put the swing on lower and lower until eventually it doesn't move. That will help them adjust to not needing the motion. You could also move the swing by baby's crib so they get use to the surroundings.

  • Try putting a song on whenever you put him in the swing, but not the audio that comes with the swing itself. Then when you move them to the crib, put that same song. You should have already created the association "song = sleep" and it should help comfort the baby.
  • Thanks for the tips! Today, she took a nap in the swing without any motion. Maybe she just likes the position and being cradled. I'll also give the song a shot, and see if I can move her out and into her crib! If it doesn't work just yet,  I'll stop stressing,  and just be happy that she's sleeping!
  • I wouldn't stress too much about habits. I don't think real issues of habits start until maybe 6 months or so, or at least that's what I've read so far. At this point, do whatever you can to let them nap!
