How concerned are you about Zika?

Re: How concerned are you about Zika?

  • I'm tentatively planning on going to Austin in November, but then I freaked out about Zika. A site I read said they expect to have local transmission by the end of the summer there. Trying to decide if I should postpone my trip

  • @yaeger07  I didn't even think about that... I have a trip paid for in November in Austin too. Looks like the average temps then are in the 60s. Hopefully that's too cool for them? Mine's a work trip I can't really avoid, but I'll probably be inside most of the time. Guess I'm packing the bug spray, too.

I live in texas. Austin is less humid, further from the coast. I think you will be fine. Just spray on.

Florida health officials just confirmed the first local transmissions by mosquitoes. I know they say transmission means are limited to mosquitoes, sex and blood, but it makes me nervous nonetheless. My mom wants to take DS down to St. Pete to visit my younger brother (I know that's a good distance north of Miami), and now I'm worried about sending him down there.

  • @chrlyr I just saw this. We have a wedding to go to in December in Orlando so I will be monitoring closely. I think we will still go as I can stay inside or in screened in areas most of the time but if shit starts getting crazy we might have to reassess.
  • I live in Tampa, Fl too. I am concerned but for the most part the mosquitos come out at night. I try to stay indoors in the evening and late hours. I haven't seen anything about the Zika  virus mosquitos  being here in FL yet but I know it's a possibility. I wouldn't cancel any trips to Disney (unless the news says otherwise) you should be fine during the day and spray down with OFF at night

Sorry to bump a nearly three-week-old topic, but the issue came up again recently for us and I didn't want to create an entirely new thread.

My husband and I have a cruise booked for the Bahamas in mid-October that was planned and paid for prior to this (unexpected) pregnancy. We're still cautiously considering going since there has only been one reported case of Zika (and that one case was transmitted abroad, not locally) and neither my husband nor myself will be going ashore at any point. I'm honestly more concerned about being at port in Florida for embarking/disembarking than I am about the cruise itself. I'm aware that our cruise line is (supposedly) issuing future cruise credits for pregnant cruisers and their partners, but our friends (who we have planned this trip with) would not have that luxury. I know our friends would be completely understanding if we bailed, but unless the CDC starts reporting local cases in the Bahamas, I'm fairly certain we will still go (albeit with precautions: spraying DEET repellent like crazy people, staying indoors if the boat leaves open ocean to dock at any time, etc.).

@kiyamurph Out of curiosity, can I ask where in the Caribbean you are still planning on traveling for your cruise? Apologies for tagging you after this wall of text, but I'm interested in hearing from someone in a very similar situation who is still planning on cruising.

  • @Bluebird2318 No worries! We're leaving from Miami and going to Grand Turk, La Ramona, Curacao, and Aruba. So pretty much all of the places where there's Zika! Honestly, I'm more concerned about Miami than anything. I'm pretty sure we're still going to go, will just be smart about it all. I'll be covered head to toe and will hose myself down with DEET repellent. I'll come outside when we're at sea, but when we're docked I'll more than likely stay on the ship, which sucks. If this were just a vacation with my husband and our little one, we would probably just cancel and get a cruise credit, but since this is a big family cruise during Thanksgiving, we'll more than likely go.
  • I live in TN and I would say I'm moderately concerned. The only cases here are travel, not mosquito, related so I feel ok but am still making a point to wear bug spray/long sleeves when I'm outdoors. I don't know that I would cancel plans unless my dr said to.

  • Ultimately I believe each person should make a decision that they feel the most comfortable making. Speaking as someone who has lived in Florida from the day I was born up until 4 months ago, if I was traveling to Orlando I would not be worried. Disney is soo much fun in the fall, I will happily give any Disney advice to anyone interested. I was an annual passholder for past three years.  However, I am also a Floridian that never was scared of hurricanes either.
  • @kiyamurph Thanks for the input! I definitely feel you on being more hesitant to reschedule with so many other people being involved. That's our issue too. I'm definitely taking the concern seriously, but the data being what it is, it seems like one of those situations where I'd be putting my baby at more risk by driving my car every day than I would be by going on this cruise. Sucks that we have to consider this at all. I really feel for the pregnant women who live in those places and have to manage their concerns on a daily basis.

  • I need to do more reading about this as well. DH is (perhaps) overly cautious. My old roommate and good friend is getting married in October in San Francisco and they just reported their first case so I'm fairly certain he will refuse to go. I can't imagine it'll be an issue at that time of year but...

  • @pandalily San Francisco's weather doesn't really vary, actually, so time of year isn't that important. But I did some research and found this:
"The type of mosquitoes that carry Zika have been spotted in the Bay Area, but only briefly and in very low numbers. So the chances of these conditions all happening are seen as slim, and it’s even less likely that transmission would become widespread."

  • I'm pretty terrified of Zika. I live in Grand Cayman and we've just had 3 locally transmitted cases. I'm currently on vacation in Canada but go back to Cayman next week. I don't know what to do, I guess I'll have to wait to speak with my obgyn.
  • I live in South Florida. I dont leave home after dark or early morning if at all possible. My husband works in the areas where there have been active transmission so i have been avoiding unprotected sexual contact.

Its frightening... all things we know little about are.

  • There is so much still unknown about Zika, which makes it even that much more scary.  I've read that the CDC recommends delaying pregnancy for 8 weeks after traveling to an area with Zika, but what about the guy who still had the virus in his semen six months later?

My OB isnt worried, but when i go for my next appointment im getting a blood test anyway. I usually use all organic, cruelty free, as natural as possible personal care products, and i bought three cans of off with deet.

Just dont go. Everyone will understand
  • I just read a person in another area of FL (StPete) has a case of Zika that so far seems to be a local transmission, not from travel. St.Pete is north of Miami, about in the middle of the state and on the west coast not east. Sucks, I'm close to St.Pete.
  • I got bite twice over the weekend and ive been freaking out.. texas mosquitos are no joke, bites hurt!!! =/ the article scared me too, but I thought its good for all of us to be informed u know... I hope for the best for all our babies <3 happy and healthy <3

  • My mom is planning to take DS to St. Pete next month to visit my brother and it's freaking me out a bit. I know that they say there isn't person to person transmission other than through sex, but am I crazy for being concerned about him contracting it? Maybe I'll have her spray him down with bug spray every day.

  • @mrsyimster I think he will be, too. After thinking it through, the chances of anything happening are so remote I don't think it's worth worrying about.

  • @chrlyr I don't know how old your DS is but I just wanted to say that I've heard transmission can be through "body fluid". So if he is a drooler you might want to be careful about how you handle cleaning his face or kisses too! I know my cousins always had big sloppy open mouth drooly kisses when they were little lol
